3 Fifth Sunday of Lent The New Covenant When the prophet Jeremiah coined the term "new covenant" he was actually doing something quite radical. For the Jewish people, there was only one covenant, the one made between the Lord God and Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai. For Jeremiah to suggest that God would somehow supersede the covenant with a new one would have sounded audacious to Jewish ears. But in this way he is a predecessor of Jesus who, in the Gospel of John, is continually portrayed as superseding the past, establishing the reign of God in a new way. And in today's Gospel passage, Jesus the "new covenant" speaks the language of his "new commandment" of love when he tells of the dying grain of wheat, and of our own need to die to self in order to be raised with Christ. As Lent ends and we prepare to enter into Holy Week, the dying grain of wheat serves as an excellent symbol of the kind of dying and self-sacrifice to which disciples are called, a symbol of that new covenant written deep within our hearts. Sharing Our Blessings Offertory Enhacement Program We are blessed by God and know that we, in turn, are called by God to bless others! Through your participation we have accomplished much good ministry at St. Genevieve Parish, and it is only through your continued participation that we can continue those good efforts! From March 24 through May 26, 2015 we will be conducting the Sharing Our Blessing: Offertory Enhancement Program. This tradition is one of the highlights of the Filipino celebration during Lent and Triduum. Pabasa is the commemoration of the life, death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ, based on the four Gospels. The "readings" also include excerpts form the Old Testament and from the Acts of the Apostles. The texts are in Tagalog and are sung in different traditional melodies. Everyone is welcome to participate. Books/texts are provided. The rosary begins at 7:00 a.m. followed immediately by the actual "Pabasa". Donations of refreshments are welcome. 5 Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma La Nueva Alianza Cuando el profeta Jeremías creó el término "nueva alianza" hacía algo muy radical. Para el pueblo judío, sólo había una alianza, la que el Señor Dios había hecho con Israel por medio de Moisés en el Monte Sinaí. Cuando Jeremías dice que de alguna manera Dios va a reemplazar la antigua alianza con una nueva, seguro que sus oyentes pensaban que era algo muy atrevido. De ese modo Jeremías es un predecesor de Jesús, quien, en el Evangelio de Juan se presenta siempre como alguien que reemplaza el pasado, estableciendo el Reino de Dios de una manera nueva. Y en el pasaje del Evangelio de hoy, Jesús, "la nueva alianza" habla con el lenguaje del "nuevo mandamiento" de amor cuando menciona el grano de trigo que muere y nuestra propia muerte al egoísmo para poder resucitar con Cristo. Al finalizar la Cuaresma y al prepararnos a entrar en la Semana Santa, el grano de trigo que muere es un símbolo excelente del tipo de muerte y autosacrificio al que los discípulos están llamados, un símbolo de esa nueva alianza escrita en lo más profundo de nuestro corazón. Tips to Help Protect Children from Sexting Before buying your child a cell phone, set rules for its use, including what sort of information and images are appropriate to share via text. Know what safeguards are available on your child s phone, such as turning off and/or blocking texting and picture features. Talk to your child about the possible social, academic, and legal consequences of sexting. They could face humiliation, lose educational opportunities, and get in trouble with the law. Encourage your child to not be a bystander or an instigator. If he or she receives a sext, discuss why it is important that he or she not forward the image to anyone else. Remind your child that they can talk to you if they receive a nude picture on their cell phone. Report any nude or semi-nude images that your child receives to law enforcement or contact 6

7 From the Parish Center Pauline Books & Media The Daughters of St Paul are coming to visit our parish for a book fair today, Sunday, March 22. One of their ministries is Pauline Books & Media, a book center located in Culver City where you can find books, DVDs, & Music to help your family grow in your faith and express your Catholic identity. They will be bringing books for all ages, lives of Saints DVDs, Music by the Daughters of St Paul Choir, and Lenten resources for purchase at the end of Mass. Easter Flower Envelope Our Holy Week/Easter décor budget comes from the generous donations received through the Flower Envelope. Every registered family received a 'Flower Envelope' in their March/April Offering Envelope Package. We ask you to please use the envelope to submit your donation at your earliest convenience. You may drop the envelope in the collection basket or turn it in to the Parish Center. We thank you in advance for contributing to our efforts in beautifying our sanctuary for the joyous season of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ! Uno de sus ministerios es "Pauline Books & Media", una libreria ubicada en Culver City, donde se pueden encontrar libros, DVDs, y música para ayudar a su familia crecer en su fe y expresar su identidad Católica. Ellas van a traer libros para todas las edades, las vidas de los Santos en DVD y música por el coro de las Hijas de San Pablo. Sobre de Flores de Pascua Nuestro presupuesto para la decoración de Semana Santa y Pascua se obtiene de las ofrendas generosas que nuestros feligreses dan através del Sobre de Flores.
