2 The Feast day celebration in honor of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help was a success. Thanks to all of you who have been very generous of your time, resources and talents! May God reward your generosity with the help of our mother, Our Lady of Perpetual Help. o0o Every Wednesday is a day dedicated to our mother, Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The communal recitation of the Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help will be done at 8:00 in the morning and at 5:00 in the afternoon. After the communal recitation, the Mass will be celebrated. Personal or private recitation of the Novena is also encouraged. The chapel is open the whole day for it. The Novena is available in English and Spanish. If you would like to light a candle, there are candles in the chapel available to be lighted. Beware: they are electronic candles. The Sacrament of Confession is also available the whole time on this day. o0o We welcome Fr. Leonard this weekend. After the 8:30 AM Mass, we will have a reception in the gathering space. Please join us. I also invite all of you to meet and greet Fr. Leonard after each Mass. When I joined you two years ago, I enjoyed your hospitality. I immediately found you as my new family. 3 Reverend Patrick Walsh Father Pat Walsh served as St. Mary s seventh pastor. He served our parish from He had been struggling with cancer and died early on Tuesday, June 23. Father Pat was the pastor who led our parish during and following the devastation caused by the fire and also during the building of our present church. We will celebrate a special Mass here at St. Mary s on Monday, July 13 at 7 PM. Father John Betts, Father Ray Carey and Father Cit will be con celebrants. Father Ray Carey will give the homily. There will be a reception following. Everyone is invited to attend. Even if you didn t know Fr. Pat personally, please join in prayer for our former pastor. 5 July 5, 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST Mark s Gospel account today is built on a double astonishment or amazement: the neighbors and family of Jesus are astonished that he taught in the synagogue with wisdom and worked powerful signs. Jesus, in turn, is amazed that they have no faith in him because they know his origins, not because of any fault with his teaching or ministry. As with many of Mark s passages, we get a rather intimate glimpse here of the human part of Jesus two fold nature. To reinforce his point, Mark tells of Jesus return to his native place, and further points out that he is in the midst of his own family members there. From the very people he expected the most, Jesus received the least. In the day of the Gospel s writing, Mark was attempting to illustrate a lesson to the house of Israel: the God of the covenant expected the greatest faith from the house of Israel, but often received the least. This is a good source for reflection on our part, we who are Jesus followers today. For the wisdom of Christ to continue and for our lives to be seen as signs of his power, he must expect and be able to find great faith among us. Will he? Can he? Does he?
