1 Course: SPN 202: Latin-American Literature of the 20 th century Credits: 3 Office: 508 Room: 507 Class Meeting Time: M,T-F 7 th Period Instructor: Patricio Hernández, Ph.D. phernandez@bhsec.bard.edu Course Description: The course will provide an introductory overview of Latin American literature since the late nineteenth century to the present through study and discussion of selected texts from Latin American authors within their historical, literary and cultural context. The aim is that through this exercise, students develop their knowledge and critical thinking, and progress in learning the Spanish language through contact with literary and cultural values of selected contemporary writers. The course will seek to strengthen and increase the knowledge base of the Spanish language while familiarizing students with authentic literary works; a few of the writer to be studied are: José Martí, Rubén Darío, Alfosina Storni, Delmira Agustini, Gabriela Mistral, Horacio Quiroga, Cesar Vallejo, Pablo Neruda, Jorge Luis Borges, Mario Vargas Llosa, Julio Cortázar, Gabriel García Márquez, and Isabel Allende. As part of the grading, students will have to complete short essays, a final essay, attend and participate in class, and complete quizzes. Prerequisite: SPN 201 or permission of the instructor. Objectives of the Course: 1. Improve, significantly, written and oral skills in Spanish. It is expected that individual's vocabulary is extended significantly. 2. The student will develop skills in researching and analysis and critical works in Spanish. 3. Understand better, through readings, some relevant aspects of Latin American culture such as some historical, social and Latin American art movements. 4. Expand the knowledge of the Latin American world so that the intellectual level of the student can try to live the experience from a Latin American perspective (to better appreciate the barrier between cultures). 5. Promote and enhance the pleasure of reading in Spanish through Latin American literature. 6. Familiarize students with literary movements and works of some of the most important exponents of Latin American literature. Duties as members of the class: Attendance and participation: The subjects are interrelated, therefore, it is imperative that students attend class regularly, collaborate and participate actively in discussions of the issues raised. With the assistance of the student is deemed to have read the material

2 stipulated by that date. Participation involves pro-active attitude towards learning, complete and submit assignments on time and working with the instructor and peers in classroom activities. The idea is to learn from each other and that includes the instructor. Failure to attend three or more classes, unjustifiably, implies the total loss of the grade for assistance Research: It is suggested that students investigate and participate in developing new material for discussion, bringing relevant literature on the subject Final Essay: The final essay will be 7-10 pages and must conform to the criteria of MLA. Criteria for the Final Essay An evaluation of the essay s structure with emphasis on aspects such as organization of the same, the complexity of the ideas, analysis of the student (this includes the terminology discussed in class), the appropriate use of Spanish grammar, the variety of vocabulary development and coherence of argument. In addition, the students must be able to assess clearly the hypotheses presented in the essay. Also, the student must demonstrate gradual progress on the development of his/her essay. In this manner, the student will be obligated to use sources that are relevant to his/her project. The essay should be a minimum of 7 pages, and a maximum of 10 pages of good quality writing. Also, it is recommended to the students to select the topic by November to be able to visit the instructor for approval, and to be able to get the proper recommendations for a successful completion of the final essay. Materials The reading materials will be delivered directly by the teacher in the form of PDF through Moodle. If it is necessary, it is the obligation of the student to print materials related to each class. To enter Moddle you must have a Moodle username and a password.
