St. Jerome writes that ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ. It s through a prayerful reading of Scripture that we come to know Jesus in a deeper way. We meet each Tuesday from 7:30-8:30pm in the meeting room at St. Joachim. Please come as your schedule allows, all are welcome at any time! 3 Reflection By Sr. Kathy St. Francis 2015 October 4 is the Feast of St. Francis, and as I am a Franciscan sister, I would like to share a few thoughts about Francis of Assisi. I believe it is almost impossible to understand St. Francis without understanding that his adult life revolved around the experience of falling in love with Jesus, and with Jesus poor and humble. Francis became so enamored of the person of Jesus that he viewed everything within the framework of the Incarnation. Francis wanted everyone to understand the unfathomable mystery of the Word made flesh, God with us. So he acted it out with a crèche, a baby and the animals that were in attendance at the first Christmas. Jesus had become human, sharing our human nature, so all the human family became holy to Francis. He could embrace the leper, forgive the robber, seek out the poorest to share his food, reverence the townsfolk who called him a fool, accept women as equal followers of the Savior, find holiness in the laity and rejoice in the company of outcasts. Because Jesus had walked the earth and spoken lovingly of the fields, the wheat, the birds, the water and the sun, so too Francis delighted in nature and saw in it the reflection of the Creator. Because Jesus invented stories of everyday incidents to teach the truth of God s love, so Francis sang and played imaginary instruments to highlight the goodness of God. Because Jesus spoke repeatedly of peace, so Francis found the courage to act as peacemaker between the mayor and the bishop, and more daring still, to seek out the Sultan with the respect of a brother. The simple truth was that Francis was in love, and love compelled him to proclaim the goodness of God at every opportunity. He welcomed followers who shared the same passion, and sent them to preach. Their preaching was not to be with the learned words of the well educated, but with the sincerity of those who could be trusted by the poor. And so we come to today, to a world in need of the witness of Francis of Assisi. We can do so by respecting the immigrant, the laborer, the single mother, the incarcerated, the homeless, the unemployed and the handicapped. We can do so by seeking peaceful solutions to our own family squabbles and to the national hatreds that create war and famine. We can learn from Francis to respect our raped and ravaged planet by supported environmental efforts to clean our water supply and stop the mining techniques that ruin the soil. We can advocate a model of equality in our church by respecting the gifts of women. And we can preach the good news by opening our hearts and our table to those without resources. There is no magic in the following of Francis. His vocation was the vocation of every Christian- to fall in love with the person of Jesus and imitate him in his mission to manifest the loving mercy of a gracious and generous God. High School Youth Ministry Our High School Youth Ministry meets every Sunday night in the lower hall at St. John s from 6:45pm to 8:30pm. All high school teenagers are invited to Come, join us for food, games, discussion and prayer. Please pray for the young people of St. Joachim - St. John s! CAN YOU HELP? Every Sunday night, we provide our teenagers with dinner at our meeting. Can you help by preparing and dropping off a meal one Sunday night? Food can be very simple baked ziti, hot dogs, chili, etc. There are approximately 15 students. There is a sign-up sheet in the rear of church where you can sign up for a Sunday, someone from the youth ministry will contact you in advance to set things up. Thank you for supporting our teenagers in this way! Religious Formation Helpers Needed As we set into motion our Religious Formation ministry for the school year, I invite you to join me in preparing for the future of our children. To be a catechist you need to have the love of God and the love of children. If you have ever considered becoming a catechist or if you have heard God calling you to do something extraordinary within our parish, the time is now. We need your help with this special ministry, whether as a catechist or as a hall monitor. If you are of high school age, a senior citizen, or anywhere in-between and you have the love of children and God you fit the requirements. Please consider answering the call and become a vital gift to our Parish and children. Please contact our DRE,

4 Gospel Plays All children beginning in 1 st grade, are invited to participate at the 4:30 Mass at St. Joachim s on Saturdays; reading, being in a small play, bringing up the gifts at the offertory or helping to pass out bulletins. We have been involving children in these capacities for over eight years at the 5:30 Mass and hope to continue offering this truly unique way for your children to learn the Gospels and teachings of Jesus. Our parishioner, Dr. William Carroll, will be speaking on TUESDAY OCTOBER 13 th at 7:30pm in the lower hall at St. Joachim s about the relationship between faith and science. In the talk he will examine common assumptions about the alleged incompatibility between evolutionary biology and the Christian doctrine of creation. Dr. Carroll will show how the thought of Thomas Aquinas on the relationship between the doctrine of creation and the natural sciences can help to eliminate much of the confusion in contemporary analyses of the philosophical and theological implications of evolutionary biology. Dr. William E. Carroll is Research Fellow in Theology, Philosophy, and Science at Blackfriars Hall, Oxford and a member of the Faculty of Theology and Religion of the University of Oxford. He is a European intellectual historian and historian of science. He is the author of: Aquinas on Creation; La Creación y las Ciencias Naturales: Actualidad de Santo Tomás de Aquino; Galileo: Science and Faith; and Creation and Science. His published work has appeared in 12 languages. Music Notes Now is a good time to join the choir! Summer is over and we are back to a routine. Meet Cathy Crocco, music director, after all Masses on Oct. 3 and 4 at the back of church after the final hymn for information. The adult Choir rehearsals are moving to WEDNESDAY night's at 7pm at St. Joachim. We sing at the 9am Mass each week and are preparing for Advent and Christmas season at St. John and St. Joachim. We have heard some great voices in the congregation! We would like to invite you to help us grow. High school and college students are welcome. We need the men of the parish too. Youth choir is forming! We meet Wednesdays from 6 to 7pm at St. Joachim church in the choir loft. Jr. High and H.S. students are welcome! We sing at the 4:30 Mass each week and are preparing for the Christmas Pageant. LECTURAS PARA EL DIA DE HOY: 1 Lectura: Gn 2,18-24: Y serán los dos una sola carne. 2 Lectura: Heb 2,9-11: El que consagra y los consagrados tienen todos un mismo origen. Evangelio: Mc 10,2-16: Lo que Dios unió, no lo separe el hombre. «Lo que Dios unió, no lo separe el hombre» Hoy, los fariseos quieren poner a Jesús nuevamente en un compromiso planteándole la cuestión sobre el divorcio. Más que dar una respuesta definitiva, Jesús pregunta a sus interlocutores por lo que dice la Escritura y, sin criticar la Ley de Moisés, les hace comprender que es legítima, pero temporal: «Teniendo en cuenta la dureza de vuestro corazón escribió para vosotros este precepto». Jesús recuerda lo que dice el Libro del Génesis: «Al comienzo del mundo, Dios los creó hombre y mujer». Jesús habla de una unidad que será la Humanidad. El hombre dejará a sus padres y se unirá a su mujer, siendo uno con ella para formar la Humanidad. Esto supone una realidad nueva: Dos seres forman una unidad, no como una "asociación", sino como procreadores de Humanidad. La conclusión es evidente: «Lo que Dios unió, no lo separe el hombre». Mientras tengamos del matrimonio una imagen de "asociación", la indisolubilidad resultará incomprensible. Si el matrimonio se reduce a intereses asociativos, se comprende que la disolución aparezca como legítima. Hablar entonces de matrimonio es un abuso de lenguaje, pues no es más que la asociación de dos solteros deseosos de hacer más agradable su existencia. Cuando el Señor habla de matrimonio está diciendo otra cosa. El Concilio Vaticano II nos recuerda: «Este vínculo sagrado, con miras al bien, ya de los cónyuges y su prole, ya de la sociedad, no depende del arbitrio humano. Dios mismo es el autor de un matrimonio que ha dotado de varios bienes y fines, todo lo cual es de una enorme trascendencia para la continuidad del género humano». De regreso a casa, los Apóstoles preguntan por las exigencias del matrimonio, y a continuación tiene lugar una escena cariñosa con los niños. Ambas escenas están relacionadas. La segunda enseñanza es como una parábola que explica cómo es posible el matrimonio. El Reino de Dios es para aquellos que se asemejan a un niño y aceptan construir algo nuevo.
