2 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 26, 2014 Theme today is The Two Great Commandments Today s Gospel reminds us of the two commandments: love of God and love of neighbor. Exodus 22: God tells the Israelites that there must be no discrimination against, or exploitation of, the weak members of their society. 1 Thessalonian 1:5-10. Saint Paul encourages the Thessalonians by telling them that their exemplary lives become known far and wide. Matthew 22: Jesus tells us that the whole of religion can be summed up in two commandments of love. By rabbinical count, the Law consisted of some 613 commandments. The question as to which commandment was the greatest was one frequently discussed among rabbis. Jesus was asked to name one, but responded by naming two. That is because, for him, the second followed directly and necessarily from the first. Love of neighbor arises out of love of God. Both commandments are found in the Old Testament. What is new is not the fact that Jesus brought these two commandments together, but that he made them of equal importance. It s easy to love certain people because they are loveable, but not so easy to love others, who are clearly and obviously flawed. But that is the real test of love: where there is no love, sow love and you will reap love. Where there is no love, put love and you will find love. You can t fly without wings. You can t grow without roots. We can t offer warmth to others if our own fireplace is cold and empty. We can only love with the amount of love that is in us. Whether we are conscious of it or not, we do love others precisely as we love ourselves. This is where love starts, but of course it is not meant to end there. All true love of self overflows in the form of love of others and of God. How I live the love of God and Neighbor? Tema de hoy es los dos grandes mandamientos El evangelio de hoy nos recuerda los dos mandamientos: el amor a Dios y amor al prójimo. Sólo podemos amar con la cantidad de amor que hay en nosotros. Ya sea que seamos conscientes de ello o no, lo hacemos amar a los demás, precisamente como nos amamos a nosotros mismos. Aquí es donde comienza el amor, pero por supuesto esto no significa terminar allí. Todo verdadero amor a sí mismo se desborda en forma de amor a los demás y de Dios. Cómo vivo yo el amor a Dios y al Prójimo? 2

My deepest appreciation to all the volunteers in the weekend of the FIESTA, October 17, 18 and 19. Every year they give of their time, talent and treasure to our parish community. A heart full of gratitude to Mr. Doug Bostrom for his untiring work the whole week, from early morning until late at night. My second highlight of this week is for all parents of Saint Joseph School, and our principal Dr. Brad Snyder, who participated in the FIESTA last weekend. Their time, talent and treasure helps our entire community and is a very positive sign of their love in action. Thank you all for your generosity and support.
