Algunos trucos y datos utililes Algunas trampas de Hardware y Software Modems y Situaciones de Modem de Evitar Otro Hardware Problematico Introduccion [Retornar al Principio] Version de Esto Documento en Ingles Este documento muestra algunas ideas sobre como crear una organizacion de apoyo cuando solamenta haya recursos miminos disponible y existen muchos clientes. El modelo que usamos es uno de un "ISP" (Proveedor de Servicios Internet") con una tripulacion chica que tenga que dar apoyo tecnico a los clientes que quieren conectarse al Internet, y que tengan problemas despues que se han conectado. Supongamos varias cosas en este documento. Algunos de estos incluyen: Filosofias de Occidente o los EE.UU de servicio y actuacion a los clientes. La infrastructura de tecnologia local, o el grupo de personas que pueden ser disponibles para ayudar. Acceso que tenga el cliente a tecnologia, telefonos, su oficina, etc. Para su situacion local, por favor, aplice las ideas y sugerencias que presento que son correcto para la situacion. Si Ud. es el unico recurso para la tecnologia, entonces tal vez tendra que ser mas auto suficiente. Empezamos hablando sobre algunos de los pasos que han sido utilies para construir un centro de soporte (Help Desk) que funciona. Definir sus metas de soporte [Retornar al Principio] Lo que es que quiere hacer? Ayudar a la gente conectarse al Internet, ensenar gente come usar sus computadore, reparar las configuraciones de software, reparar hardware, instalar software en el computador del cliente, o otra cosa? Cuanto apoyo puede dar? Puede configurar cada maquina de cada persona para conectarse al Internet? Va a configurar el software para ellos? En algunos casos esto puede funcionar, en otros no.

2 Page 2 of 10 Vas a dar a sus clientes las herramientas que se necesitan para conectarse al Internet? Esto incluye software y documentacion - incluyendo los pasos necesario para resolver problemas si algo no se funciona bien. Definir que sus clientes pueden esperar [Retornar al Principio] Si ustedes son abierto y honesto de cuanto soporte pueden dar a sus clientes, asi ellos van a esperar algo razonable. Presenta su nivel de apoyo en una manera positiva. Por ejemplo, que no lo dice, "No podemos venir a su casa en persona para configurar su coneccion al Internet," pero trata algo como, "Podemos darle, o prestar, un CD-ROM que contiene un instalador y todo la documenacion necesario para que usted se puede conectarse al Internet desde la casa. Si hay campos de soporte que se pueden convertir en problems, entonces explica exactamente que Ud. puede hacer. Poner esto en un documento escrito. Esto ayuda cualquier persona que tiene que comunicarse con los clientes si ambos pueden referir a un documento escrito, o algunas paginas en la Web. Remover los cuellos de botella [Retornar al Principio] Este punto es critico. Mire bien a que Ud. requiere para que sus clientes pueden hacer que quieren (como conectarse al Internet desde la casa). Encuentra los partes de este proceso donde la gente gasta mas tiempo y remover tanto como posible estes cuellos de botella. Si Ud. tiene que pasar horas, o tal vez dias, trabajando por una solucion al problema, vale la pena! Imaginese 1,000 clientes que tienen problemas en el mismo parte de un proceso, y que llamen a Ud. o su tripulacion por ayuda. Si Ud. saca el problema, tal vez pudieras ahorrar meses de trabajo para su mismo o su tripulacion. Remover cuellos de botella puede causar conflictos interpersonales o problemas politicas (en la oficina, con el gobierno local, etc.). Planifiqua su ataque. Piense con quien Ud. esta hablando cuando trata de resolver la situacion. Si su cuello de botella (problema) es bastante grande tal vez va a perder clientes. Si Ud. hace esto como un negocio esto significa que el problema es critico. Tambien un problema grande que no se resuelve puede significar que tenga clientes que no se realiza todo la potencia de los servicios que Ud. les ofrece. Si no se puede sacar el problema, deja que sus clientes sabe directamente que se pueden hacer para resolver el problema. Ejemplo 1 de un Cuello de Botella: Tal vez tenga Ud. un clave de cuenta diferente por el "dialin" (coneccion desde un modem) que tiene que usar el cliente para buscar su correo electronico. Mientras que este sistema parece bastante normal a Ud., se va a confundir completemente la gran mayoria de sus clientes. Si es posible, crear solamente una cuenta con un clave bueno y seguro que pueden usar los usuarios para accedir su servicio de dialin y su cuenta de correo electronico. Cuando un usuario quiere cambiar su clave hazlo para que los claves de las cuentas de correo y de acceso por modem (dialin) cambian. Ejemplo 2 de un Cuello de Botella: Ud. no use PAP para autenticar los clientes de dialin. Entonces un usuario tiene que entrar informacion para correr un "script" de login, o en Windows 95/98 tienen que usar la pantalla de "Terminal Session" para el servicio de dialin.este nivel de complexidad se confunde todo menos los usuarios mas determinados (los "expertos"). Ejemplo 3 de un Cuello de Botella: Ud. da a sus usuario instrucciones decente como conectarse al Internet desde la casa, pero no les da ningun software configurado por su ambiente. Estes usuarios van a llamar, o venir a su oficina, preguntando, "Ya, me conecte al Internet. Y, ahora que hago?" Trata de responder a esta pregunta antes que Ud. la recibe. Note: Claro que hay mucho mas ejemplos de cullo de botella como estos, pero estos son unos pocos para dar algun idea como se parece los problemas de soporte inesperado. Una cosa bien importante - Para resolver estas problemas muchas veces va a necesitar el ayuda de otro departmente de su centro de informatica. Tal vez ellos no van a entender porque es

3 Page 3 of 10 importante. Mas encima, si ellos tienen que gastar muchos recursos en resolver el problema. No hay una respuesta buena a esto, menos que si su equipo de soporte gaste mucho tiempo en resolver el mismo problema este gasto es un que tiene que pagar todo su organizacion. Si puede mostrar el costo en algun forma puede ser posible convencer su jefe, o otra gente, que la resolucion del problema vale la pena. Ensenar a sus usuarios [Retornar al Principio] Cuando es necesario muchos usuarios leeran documentacion, prueba algunos pasos para resolver un problema, mirar a las paginas de Web que contiene datos utiles (si se pueden alcanzar), o, por lo minimo, mandar un correo electronico con una descripcion de su problema. Si Ud. puede descargar a su base de usuarios todo el proceso de resolver un problema que es posible, entonces puede aumentar el rendimiento de su tripulacion, hacer sus usuarios mas capaz y (esperamos) felices, y reducir la cantidad de trabajo que tiene que hacer. Hay muchas maneras para hacer esto. Algunas de estas incluyen: Poner tu documentacion en la Web. Esto significa hacer paginas de la Web con la documentacion que ha hecho que se explica como conectarse al Internet, configurar los clientes de software de Internet, que se tratan sobre su sitio, policias que tiene, etc. Si un usuario no se puede conectar a la Web el se puede ver todo los documentos con un computador de un vecino, amigo, o si es un estudiante, tal vez, se puede ver los documentos en la escuela. Hacer todo la documentacion detallada posible. Es mucho mas facil dar un docuento a un usuario que se explica como funciona una cosa que tratar de explicar o dar instrucciones sobre la misma cosa repetidas veces. Hacer programas de instalacion. Un producto bueno en el PC para hacer esto es el software de instalacion WISE. Uno se puede encontrar sus productos por la Web en Tambien, el producto de InstallMaster es excelente a Ud. puede dar a sus clientes un disco, probably un CD-ROM, y algo de documentacion que explica que tiene que hacer, entonces Ud. y su tripulacion podran dar soporte a un base de clientes varias veces mas grande. En la Universidad de Oregon hacemos un CD-ROM que se llama el Duckware (el proyecto tiene una pagina a Sin este producto nunca podriamos dar apoyo a 17,500 alumnos mas 2,500 gente de tripulacion con nuestra tripulacion de alumnos y tres personas de tiempo complet. Provee soporte desde correo electronico (tenemos una direccion de microhelp@oregon.uoregon.edu) que se puede contestar mas o menos rapido (dentro 1 o 2 dias?). Ofrece entrenamiento a sus usuarios si es posible (cursos de 1 o 2 horas sirven bastante bien). Disenar su flujo de trafico Mientras que construye su servicio de soporte piense en de donde van a venir las preguntas. Van a llamar la mayoria de las personas? Van a venir en persona? Van a mandar correo electronico? Que sera la mezcla de estos servicios? Tambien, quien va a responder a todo estas preguntas? Si tiene una tripulacion chica tiene que asegurar que la persona respondiendo a la gente puede hacer su trabajo. Algunos ejemplos siguen: Si tiene alguin que contesta el telefono y que da ayuda a los clientes que vienen en persona, entonces como se va a tratar con un cliente de telefono cuando tenga un cliente presente? Tal vez va a querer de asignar alguien que puede funcionar como respaldo por el telefono en estos momentos. Si gente va a traer hardware a su oficina, probablemente va a querer tener reparado su maquina en el mismo momento. Piense en un servicio donde la gente se puede dejar su maquina. Si el telefono es siempre ocupado, trata de separa la persona que contesta el telefono

Por ejemplo, si tiene una recepcion que se puede acceptar maquinas esto es mucho mejor que tener el cliente hablar directamente con la persona que esta contestando el telefono. Quiere que sus clientes pueden acercar, ver, o hablar directamente con su tripulacion de soporte? En algunos casos va a quere esto y en otros tal vez no. Necesita tener maquinas disponible para mostra los clientes como usar software? Si es asi, trata de tener una maquina (o mas) por esto, o asignar una maquina donde uno se puede hacer esto. Si su organizacion es grande es posible que va a querer dos niveles tripulacion de soporte - Ellos que tratan directamente con los clientes que vengan en persona y ellos que contestan el telefono, reparan maquinas, contestar correo electronico, etc. Use las herramientas que ya estan disponible [Retornar al Principio] Hay varias herramientas (utilidades de software o programas) disponible que pueden hacer la construccion de una organizacion de soporte mucho mas facil. Oranizaciones mas grande, muchas veces, usan software profesional de Help Desk que se puede costar miles de dolares. Este software normalmente esta disenado para grupos con varias lines telefonicas, tripulaciones grandes, y una cola de espera para las llamadas de sus clientes. En vez de gastar tanto dinero, aqui hay algunos utilidades o software que Ud. puede encontrar sin valor, o por lo minimo, bien utiles para construir su infrastructura de soporte. Este software tiene un costo. El software en la seccion que viene es gratis. Dreamweaver: Para la creacion de paginas del Web. Otros le gusta el Front Page de Microsoft, o GoLive CyberStudio de Adobe. ( Photoshop 4/5: Para la creacion de paginas de Web y la manipulacion de imagenes. ( ULead Web Plugin: Le ayuda a grabar sus imagenes usando menos espacio (como en Photoshop), y crear los "dropshadows" y botones. Ud. puede hacer todo esto desde el Photoshop, y otros productos, sin un producto asi, pero puede ahorrar mucho tiempo usando algo como los ULead Web Plugins. Otro programa asi que funciona mejor se llama los "plugins" de Extensis. Puede encontrar este software en FrameMaker: Le permite hacer documentos muy complicados y muy utilies. Como los folletas de uno o dos paginas. Tambien sirven los productos como Microsoft Word, Adobe Pagemaker y otros. ( BBEdit: Uno de los mejores editores de texto que existe. Solamente disponible por el Macintosh. ( EditPlus: Para el PC. Un editor de documentos excelente. Se puede encontrar en WISE Installer Makers: Para automizar las instalaciones y configuracion de software para sus clientes este software es muy util y poderoso. Un consejo: compre una version de Wise que le permite editar los "scripts" de instalacion directamente. Si no puede hacer esto, el producto no vale la pena. ( InstallShield: el otro producto de instalacion. Es muy poderoso, y un poco mas dificil para empezar de construir programas de instalacion, pero le permite hacer cualquier cosa en sus instalaciones. Stuffit InstallerMaker: Para hacer instalaciones para el Macintosh. Realmente no hay ningun software bueno para hacer esto por el Macintosh, pero esto es lo mejor que existe. Si quiere, puede inscribirse en el programa de "Developers" de Apple.

5 Page 5 of 10 Despues tendra acceso a su kit de desarollmento de softweare que le permite hacer programas de instalacion usando un lenguage como C++. ( Microsoft Access o Claris FileMaker Pro: Ambos de estos programas son base de datos excelenetes que Ud. puede usar para hacer base de datos internos para hacer algo como seguir las llamadas de sus clientes, resolucion de problemas, tipos de problemas, etc. FileMaker corre en el Macinotsh, Windows 95/98/NT, y se puede mostrar datos a la Web bien facilmente. Microsoft Excel: Un producto exclenete para grabar datos sobre que tiene (como su hardware y software), sus cliente, gastos, etc. Herramientas Gratis[Retornar al Principio] Hay herramientas (software) que se replican la mayoria de los funciones del software que mencionamos arriba, o software comercial. Algunas de allas mencionada aqui son muy utiles y son tan util, so no mas util, que los productos comerciales.una cosa para recordar mientras que Ud. se junta todo sus utilidades, software, y herramientas es: Si o no el software que use es un producto comercial no es importante. Que es importante es si se funciona bien para la cosa que esta tratando de hacer. Muchos grupos han ahorrado algo de dinero (100, 200, o 300 dolares, no importa), pero han pasado horas no contable tratando de terminar su trabajo. Uno se puede usar este tiempo en una manera mucha mejor - haciendo otras cosas, como ayudando sus clientes! Pero, si ya no tiene su organizacion los recursos para comprar todo que quiere es bueno saber que hay cosas disponibles para hacer su trabajo. Linux (UNIX) - Varios ISPs (Proveedores de Servicio Internet), y algunas companias, usan esta version de UNIX que es gratis. Hay varias distribuciones. Mire a la pagina para empezar. El Servidor de Web Apache - Apache cuenta por el porcentaje mas grande en la Web de servidores (pero menos que antes). Hay versiones disponible por la mayoria de "sabores" (tipos) de UNIX. Empieza a para mas informacion. Intenet Information Server (Servidor de Informacion Internet) o "IIS" - Es un producto de Microsoft que tiene servicios de Web, FTP, SMTP, NNTP, y mucho mas que corre bajo Windows NT Server (Servidor de Windows NT). Empieza en Programas de CGI/PERL por UNIX - Hay cientos, so no miles, de programas que ya existen que son escrito en PERL que son disponible en la Web. Un lugar excelente para empezar es Matt's Script Archive a Programas de ASP - Como los programas de PERL, hay muchos programas ya escritos que existen gratis en la Web. Estos programas corren bajo el Internet Information Server (IIS). Emacs corriendo bajo UNIX para editar HTML. Esta disponible por el proyecto de GNU (software gratis) - BBEdit Lite - Una version de este editor que es gratis. Corre solamente bajo el Macintosh. ( Y, no se olvide para buscar mucho mas productos gratis o no muy caros vaya a los sitios de Web comotucows.com, Shareware.com, Freeware.com, y Download.com. La Web: La mejor herramienta para hacer su trabajo como un profesional de soporte es la Web, y es gratis! La cantidad de los datos y recursos disponibles en la Web son asombros. Casi todas las preguntas que alguien te va a hacer tiene una respuesta en algun parte de la Web. Claro que hay excepciones, pero aqui son algunos lugares para busquar cuando la respuesta no es obvia: Microsoft Knowledge Base (El Base de Conocimiento de Microsoft) a Vaya a el link "Support Online" para encontrar

6 Page 6 of 10 miles de documentos tecnicos que trata sobre todo las cosas Microsoft. Apple Technical Information Library (Biblioteca de Informacion Technica de Apple), o "The TIL" por corto. La direccion es: Sitios de Web de busqueda como: (hoy en dia tiene el indice de paginas mas grande) y un sitio como Altavista ofrece traduccion de las paginas de Web desde varios lenguages a varios lenguages. Tambien, ofrece busquedas en varios lenguages, incluyendo espanol. A este punto puede ser que Ud. tiene una organizacion de soporte (Help Desk) puesto. Ahora porque esta preparodo para ayudar a sus clientes, conectarles al Internet, etc. va a encontrar varias situaciones de que requieren un poco de planificacion por su parte. Abajo hablamos sobre algunos de las temas que puede encontrar y como tratar con estas temas. Seccion Nueva - Apoyando su tripulacion de soporte*************************** Que hacer por los problemas que no se puede resolver? [Retornar al Principio] Que pasa con los clientes que no se pueden resolver sus problemas, o quienes requieren demasiado tiempo y recursos de su tripulacion para resolver un problema por telefono? Aqui son algunas sugerencias sobre como se puede resolver una situacion asi: Que sea seguro que ha identificado alguien que puede decir definitivamente "si" o "no" por las pedidas excepcional. Probablemente esta persona sera un gerente de su grupo. Permite que la gente que trabaja con el publico tener la posibildad de refirir casos dificiles o que presentan problemas a otra persona. Si Ud. tiene policias verbales o escritas de como se trata con los casos excepcionales este se puede hacer la vida mucho mas facil para su mismo y su tripulacion. En el momento cuando se toma un caso excepcional asegura con alguien tenga la responsibilidad por el caso hasta que se resuelta. Si nadie tiene la responsibilidad de resolver el problema es posible que el problema puede estar olvidado. Esto puede resultar en un cliente muy molestado. ************************* Once you take on an exceptional case be sure that someone is responsible for the case until it is resolved. If no one is handed the responsibility of resolving the problem, then it may get dropped or go unnoticed. This can result in a very upset customer. Be sure you give the responsibility for such cases to someone who can actually deal with them. I.E., don't give a really difficult hardware/software troubleshooting issue to a new hire who is a student and only around part of the time, unless you feel comfortable with their level of responsibility. Don't be afraid to let someone know that they have exceeded your support capabilities. If you are giving "free" support, or basic setup support that comes with establishing an account you can explain to a client that you simply don't have the resources to resolve their problem, but present this with positive options. Identify local businesses that can help with problems your customers may encounter. If you find a common problem you might even want to consider discussing this type of problem with a local company or group, explain how it can be resolved and let them know that if they are willing to help your clients in these situations that you may refer people to them. If there are consultants who will make house calls for a fee you can present this as an option. You can even let the customer know how to find these people.

7 Page 7 of 10 Sometimes customers will offer to pay you, or your staff to come and help them. What you do in this situation is your own decision. Very few jobs are as quick and easy as the client, or you may think. Once a customer has paid you they may feel that they can contact you repeatedly for special help without further payment - this becomes an unclear area of support. Once you help someone with one problem they may think that all future problems are related to what you did - this can be good and bad. If you need the money, feel like helping, and it is not a conflict of interest, then paid for outside jobs can work well, but understanding these potential conflict possible outcomes is useful. What about a machine check-in service at your company. Can the customer bring their machine to you? If it's a software problem you can probably fix it with minimal investment in hardware to solve such problems. You can do this as a low-level service. This gives your staff an out for issues that are not easily resolved. Note, if you charge for such service, then client expectations are likely to change considerably. Algunas cosas mas se presenta debajo. Tal vez estas no van a afectar directamente que fue presentado anteriormente, but en algunos casos se puede cambiar como Ud. vea la informacion presentada aqui. Filosofias de Soporte - De que se trata su organizacion? [Retornar al Principio] Un punto clave para cualquier organizacion que da apoyo es tomar una mirada de como se siente de apoyar sus clientes. Esto es uno de las cosas dificil de expresar como un grupo de reglas, pero alli tenemos algunos puntos claves: Quiere Ud., o deberia Ud. dar apoyo? Tiene sentido que su organizacion ofrece apoyo a los clientes? Asegura que Ud. se identifica que son las cosas que hace y si o no puede ayudar a los clientes si ellos le contactan. Tal vez esto es mas que obvio, pero algunos grupos olvidan este paso. Por ejemplo, si su grupo hace programacion, o hace los sitios de la Web mientras que otro grupo esta a cargo la infrastructura de su red, quien deberia responder a las pedidas por ayuda de los clientes no es tan obvio. Es posible que tendra que sentarse con todo involcrado y hacer decisiones sobre que grupo va a apoyar que cosa. Ud. le gusta dar el apoyo? Si Ud. es la persona haciendo la estructure de soporte para su grupo, pero no le gusta dar apoyo a los clientes (no es malo y es comun), entonces tal vez seria mejor ver si hay otra persona en su grupo que le gusta hacer esto, o quien esta disponible para hacer esto. Muchas veces dando el buen apoyo requiere mucho entusiasmo y mucho mas patiencia! Ahi es un consejo: si/cuando un cliente llama y da culpa para todo sus problems a Ud. que no lo tomo personalmente! Aprende como ser simpatico con el cliente y despues ayudarle a resolver su problema, a pesar quien tiene la culpa. Paga la gente por apoyo? Paga la gente algunas veces? Requiere su organizacion pago si alguien le contacta con un problema? Si es asi, sus clientes casi siempre van a esperar que sus problemas estan 100% resuelta - no importa que es el problema. Despues que un problema esta resuelta, varios clientes sientan que problemas en el futuro deberia estar resuelta tambien porque se los vea como el mismo problema. **************************** The "techy" vs. "touchy, feely" side of things. Who do you hire to give support? sometimes you may not have a choice in this matter, but when you do here are a few things to keep in mind. Someone with excellent technical skills but poor personal skills may not work well as a consultant. You may find that this person's technical skills could be used behind the scenes more efficiently. This might include working on

8 Page 8 of 10 machine repair, Web pages, possibly responses (if they can interact well enough), etec. Someone with almost no technical skills, but awesome personal skills might be worth the time and effort to train. The big unknown is whether this person will be able to learn enough, or understand enough to become useful to your group. There is no substitute for experience. Many people assume that supporting things like modem dialin, Windows, etc. is not all that hard. While this is true for many questions that may be asked, there are still so many variables in these, and other areas that a person with lots of experience will often be able to answer questions that someone new may not. Understanding the customer's viewpoint. Does anyone in your group have the perspective of the customer? Putting yourself in the customers shoes can often help to explain why they act they way they do. What may seem reasonable or obvious to you is still surprising and new to them. Some Assorted Hints and Tips [Retornar al Principio] Think about what you recommend to people. If you tell someone that they can't go wrong buying brand 'x' and then their equipment fails they will probably blame you. A good tactic is to give the client a few choice, or tell them what has worked well for you. If you have the money pay for good hardware. The PC industry has so many options, varying degrees of standard adherence, and some truly bad hardware. If you spend five hours trying to get the cheap sound card you bought to work when the SoundBlaster 'x' card would have cost $10.00 more, then you have easily wasted your time and money. Think twice before telling a client that something is a really bad piece of hardware. Find out what they have first. If you tell them that Packard-Bell computers are just awful (they are), and that is what they have purchased, then you have probably created an adverserial situation without realizing it. Feel free to publish what brands of hardware do and don't work in your environment. This is a service to your users. Let them know that Zoom modems may be cheap, but they are slow, and that for a few dollars more they could get something that works well and reliably, like a 3COM Sportster external modem. Look to the future when you setup your infrastructure. Will that network server you are about to install because it does database updates so well make any sense in the context of the rest of your group? Or, should you bite the bullet and make the database work with your present product? There are tradeoffs both ways. Some Hardware and Software "Gotcha's" [Retornar al Principio] What's a "Gotch'a?" It's anything unexpected that fails to work like you thought it would. Below is a list of some of the things that we (Microcomputer Services at the University of Oregon) have encountered over the years. Modems: this an area with many ways to get stuck with something that doesn't work, or doesn't work well. What we currently recommend is that, whenever possible, a user gets an external modem. Brands and models that we know work well include the external 3Com/USR Sportster 33.6 and 56K models as well as the 3Com/USR Courier 56K. At this point in time the 3Com/USR Sportster is the overwhelming choice when it comes to modems. Another decent modem has been the Diamond Multimedia SupraFAXModem 33.6 and 56K models. Please note that these are the external models. We have not had good luck using the 3Com WinModem or the internal version of the 3Com Sportster. Modems and Modem Situations to Avoid [Retornar al Principio] 3Com/USR Sportster 33.6/56K Voice model. This model is all black. If you can get it to work it is fast. This modem is so difficult to configure in many cases that

9 Page 9 of 10 beginning to intermediate users may not get it to work at all. Any 28.8 or above modem with any machine that is a SX model, or below. There are exceptions to this case, but here are the issues. Most older 486 computers have serial ports that use the 8250 UART chip. This chip only support transfer rates up to 9600 bps. A 14.4 or above modem will/can swamp the port and cause the machine to freeze. Even if the model 486 has a higher-speed serial port using a UART Chip it may not be able to keep up with the data transfers for graphics intensive Web pages. In this case the CPU of the machine may not keep up with the incoming data. This causes CRC overruns that can eventually cause the machine to freeze. There is no hard and fast rule in this case. Some older 386 machines can actually keep up with the data transfers of a UART chip (notably most IBM PS/2 models due to their superior bus design at the time), while other cannot. Note, you can get around the serial port issue by using an internal modem, but you may still have the data overrun issue due to processor and bus speed. If the user is just getting their you can usually make this type of situation work. Almost all Global Village modems. These modems are mainly used on the Macintosh line of computers. Global Village modems are traditionally very high cost, but not very good performers. Even worse, some Global Village models do not support hardware flow control - even though the modem may be a 33.6Kbps model. This means that the modem is essentially broken out of the box. Global Village uses a software trick to emulate hardware flow control. Some products, like MacPPP, don't like this and will often report that the connection is unreliable. All modems that get their power from an ADB bus. The ADB bus is the keyboard port on most Macintosh computers. These modems are generally unreliable, slower, and can actually damage the motherboard on portable machines. Two such models are the Global Village PowerPort and the SupraExpress modem. Inexpensive PCMCIA card modems. Many of these cards do not even have drivers specific to the card, but rather bundle a version of the CardWorks software for Windows to get them to work. This software is very difficult for the average user to make work. Even worse, these modems may be another modem in disguise, but you cannot use that modems drivers or flashers since the manufacture may have made small changes to the hardware. Other Problematic Hardware: Before beginning with this section it should be noted that almost all this hardware can be used, and in some cases, may work right out of the box. What we deal with is percentages, industry standard stuff, and whether "getting it to work" for a professional might be easy, but for a novice it may be next to impossible. With this in mind, here's our list from the last few years. Packard-Bell Computers: these have been a support person's worst nightmare. Most models use non-standard hardware that includes all sorts of extras, like telephony, that easily breaks. Some Packard-Bell machines have even shipped with every single IRQ in use out of the box, and this does not include a network card. Most AST Computers: While AST has some good performers they have traditionally created some non-standard configurations that are very difficult to make work if you need to change anything. Case in point, the early AST Pentiums came with Ethernet built-in on the motherboard. If you ever wanted your own card, or a faster one, the AST card could not be disabled - you simply had to run with both in use. The Macintosh Performa 6400 series. These machines were preconfigured in such a manner that it was almost impossible to make them work unless you wanted to dial into one of the pre-chosen ISP services that Apple had already chosen for you. This stuff is pretty cool and usually works out of the box, but if anything breaks most users will not be able to resolve the problem. Even worse, most of these machines do not come with a standard Windows 95/98 CD-ROM, but rather a "restore CD-ROM" that will set the machine back to it's original state, even removing references to software installed after the inital OS installation. Note that these do not include portable models from these companies, just desktop models. Offenders of this practice include" Toshiba Sony, and Compaq The imac: it's a pretty neat machine, but because of this it pushes the edge of current technology a bit. If you already own a Mac and need to transfer data using a floppy, or, perhaps, you are a student who has written a paper, the imac does not come with a floppy drive. You can buy one from imation for about $150.00, but this drive was made for a PC originally. the drive has a manual eject button. This causes all multidisk Mac installations to fail and crash if they are run from disk. Also note that the imac does not have a SCSI or standard ADB port. This means that any serial or SCSI device you have had will need some sort of adapter to be usable with the imacs USB ports. If this is your first computer, then the imac may be a better choice.
