It is the opening of Catholic School Week and former principals, vice-principals, teachers and aides have been invited to the Family Mass at 10:45AM. They and others will be invited to take a mallet in hand and ring the bell at the side of the church. This bell was made in 1909 and rang out the times of Masses and the Angelus daily when the church was located at 2 nd and Ellsworth Streets until the church was torn down in There will be ten rings, each representing 15 years. It is a great blessing that Sister Joseph Cecile, the last Holy Cross Sister who was principal from 1979 to 1988 will be here to join the celebration and give us a physical reminder of the many years of generous service given by the Sisters of the Holy Cross, from 1931 to Since that time we have been blessed with many dedicated lay people with a strong sense of continuing the mission of Catholic education in St. Matthew Parish. They have served as administrators, teachers and aides and support staff. Some have served for over twenty years Their long-term service has been the source of so much of the stability of St. Matthew School and its attraction for families across generations. Besides that in the last few years, teachers have come on board, men and women, who have brought youth and vitality or experience from the world of business or the arts or religious studies. Their presence has brought a great variety to the teaching staff and has contributed to its vitality. (Continued on page 2) Did You Know? 2 St. Matthew Catholic Church 2 January 27, 2013 Dear St Matthew parishioners, families and friends, (cont d) In this week, we take the opportunity to let them know how much we appreciate their dedication and expertise. They are constantly renewing themselves by workshops, ongoing courses and teacher institutes. Besides the teachers, Catholic School Week offers all of us the opportunity to thank the parents for all the hard work, dedication, extracurricular activity, community-building and fund-raising which consumes so much of their time and energy. The parents constant participation has made St. Matthew such a thriving community experience for so many families. The challenge for parents today is to keep the faith dimension central. As the motto of the school emphasizes: Faith, Knowledge, Community. The webpage for the school reminds the parents: As primary educators, all parents are asked to spend time and effort in nurturing their own and their family s spirituality. All parents are strongly encouraged to attend formation classes, prayer groups, or retreats offered by the parish, parents association or the Archdiocese. In another part of the bulletin parents are invited to participate in a Lenten faith-sharing program. Most of all, we thank God for all the children who attend St. Matthew School, for all their striving, for their desire to excel in school, sports, service and faith commitment. We pray for them that, in their time at St. Matthew School, they will, like Jesus in Nazareth, advance in wisdom, age and grace, before God and men. There are many others who contribute greatly to St. Matthew School. We mention them today and thank them for their support: alumni, parishioners, priests. There will be other opportunities in the jubilee year to single them out and thank them. Fr. Anthony E. McGuire Grief Support Group The St. Pius Grief Ministry is offering a facilitated 9- week support group session. If you are mourning the loss of a loved one this may benefit you. Mis queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo, Este fin de semana la Parroquia de St. Matthew celebra el primer gran evento de los 150 años. Es la apertura de la Semana de las Escuelas Católicas y todos los ex-directores, exsubdirectores, ex-maestros y ex-asistentes han sido invitados a la Misa Familiar a las 10:45 AM. Todos ellos serán invitados a tomar un martillo en la mano y tocar la campana al lado de la iglesia. Esta campana se hizo en 1909 y sonó todas las Misas diarias y el Ángelus, cuando la iglesia se localizaba en la calle Segunda y Ellsworth hasta que la iglesia fue demolida en Sonará diez veces, cada vez representará 15 años. Es una gran bendición que la Hermana Joseph Cecile, la última Hermana de la congregación de la Santa Cruz quien fuera directora de la escuela del año 1979 al 1988 nos estará acompañando para unirse a la celebración y nos recuerda físicamente de los muchos años de generoso servicio dado por las Hermanas de la Santa Cruz, de 1931 a Desde entonces hemos sido bendecidos con muchos laicos dedicados con un fuerte sentido de continuar la misión de la educación católica en la Parroquia de St. Matthew. Algunos han servido durante más de veinte años. Su servicio a largo plazo ha sido la fuente de gran parte de la estabilidad de la Escuela de St. Matthew y su atracción para las familias a través de las generaciones. Además de que en los últimos años, los maestros han llevado a la juventud la vitalidad o la experiencia del mundo de los negocios o las artes o estudios religiosos. Su presencia ha traído una gran variedad para el personal docente y ha contribuido a su vitalidad. En esta semana, aprovechamos la oportunidad para hacerles saber lo mucho que apreciamos su dedicación y experiencia. Ellos están constantemente renovándose asistiendo a cursos y talleres. Además de los profesores, la Semana de las Escuelas Católicas nos ofrece a todos la oportunidad de agradecer a los padres por todo el arduo trabajo, la dedicación, la actividad extracurricular, la creación de comunidades y recaudación de fondos que consume gran parte de su tiempo y energía. La constante participación de los padres ha hecho de St. Matthew una experiencia de comunidad próspera para muchas familias. El reto para los padres de hoy es mantener la dimensión de fe central. Como el lema de la escuela hace hincapié en: La fe, el conocimiento, la Comunidad. La página web de la escuela les recuerda a los padres: "Como educadores, a todos los padres se les pide que dediquen tiempo y esfuerzo en la consolidación de su propia espiritualidad y de su familia. Se les recomienda a todos los padres asistir a clases de formación, grupos de oración, o retiros ofrecidos por la parroquia, asociación de padres o de la Arquidiócesis. " En otra parte del boletín se les invita a participar de un programa de Renovación Espiritual durante la Cuaresma. Sobre todo, agradecemos a Dios por todos los niños que asisten a la Escuela de St. Matthew, por todo su esfuerzo por sobresalir en la escuela, los deportes, el servicio y compromiso de fe. Oramos por ellos para que, el tiempo en la escuela de St. Matthew, lo hagan como Jesús en Nazaret, y avancen en sabiduría, edad y gracia ante Dios y ante los hombres. Hay muchas otras personas que contribuyen en gran medida a la Escuela de St. Matthew. Los mencionamos hoy y les damos las gracias por su apoyo: ex-alumnos, feligreses, sacerdotes. For perspective, that is more loss of American lives than occurred in all the world wars added together! One fourth of our citizens under 40 are dead, and the survivors know it. No surprise, then, that our youth are pro-life. This year, let s do the right thing. Let s end contraception and have abstinence outside marriage, and natural family planning, within marriage. Baptismal Catechesis Prior to the baptism of your infant, parents are required to attend our Baptism class. Our evening will end with a warm, casual reception in the Parish Center. All ladies of the parish are invited.
