Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As God s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

2 Notes from the Pastor This has been a month of celebrating some of the great Solemnities of the Church calendar: Jesus Ascension into Heaven, the Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the Apostles, and this Sunday s Feast of the Most Holy Trinity. It would be well to remember that, in human terms, all of these feasts point back to a much simpler event, that is the Archangel Gabriel s announcement to the Blessed Virgin Mary that she had been chosen to become the mother of the Redeemer, our Lord Jesus Christ. How wonderful, as we close this month of May, a month especially dedicated to Mary, that we should turn to her and give her honor. On Thursday, May 31 st, we will celebrate the Feast of the Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. The two occasions which we pray as the first and second Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary are closely linked. In his Gospel, St. Luke tells us that Mary, still in amazement at the news of her own unexpected pregnancy, is informed by the angel that her cousin Elizabeth, a woman who to her sorrow had never been able to have children, has at last conceived a child in her old age. The Gospel then tells us that Mary right away got up and hastened to the hill country, to a town in Judea where Elizabeth lived. When she arrives, the two kinswomen greet one another with great joy. As they embrace, their unborn sons leap in their mothers wombs. It is a seminal moment: Elizabeth s son, the future John the Baptist, will be the last and greatest of the Old Testament Prophets, and Mary s son, Jesus, will become the Messiah, the Savior of the World. But I do imagine that, as Mary set out alone for the hill country, she must have experienced a certain amount of anxiety and apprehension. What did any of this mean, her pregnancy and that of her cousin? What really lay ahead for her? Yet despite her anxiety, Mary put all of her trust in God, and she never ceased saying yes to God s plan, even as she stood in grief at the foot of the Cross. These spiritual events, these great moments in our salvation history, are of course unique, but they are also what you could call archetypal. In one way or another, we who are Christians recapitulate in our own lives the life, passion, death and resurrection that we share with Jesus Christ. We are called to be like Mary, his mother, in our acceptance of God s will. Like Mary, who hurried to the aid of her cousin, we are called to serve others above ourselves and to love, even to the point of self-sacrifice. To press with courage and faith through the trials of this life, to forgive wrongs done to us, to do whatever good we can, to love like Christ and to honor God with our whole hearts this is the path to heaven; this is the way to eternal life. Ulysses Notas del Párroco Este mes hemos celebrado algunas de las más grandes solemnidades del calendario de la Iglesia: la Ascensión de Jesús al Cielo, el Pentecostés cuando el Espíritu Santo fue derramado sobre los Apóstoles, y la Fiesta de la Santísima Trinidad de este domingo. Sería bueno recordar que, en términos humanos, todas estas fiestas apuntan a un evento mucho más simple, que es el anuncio del Arcángel Gabriel a la Santísima Virgen María que ella había sido elegida para ser la madre del Redentor, nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Qué maravilloso, ya que cerramos este mes de mayo, un mes especialmente dedicado a María, con el mensaje que debemos acudir a ella y darle honor. El jueves, 31 de mayo, celebraremos la Fiesta de la Visitación de María a su prima Isabel. Las dos ocasiones en las que oramos, como el primer y el segundo Misterio Gozoso del Rosario, están íntimamente relacionadas. En su Evangelio, San Lucas nos dice que María, todavía sorprendida por la noticia de su propio embarazo inesperado, es informada por el ángel de que su prima Isabel, una mujer que sufrió toda su vida por su esterilidad, por fin ha concebido un niño en su vejez. El Evangelio nos dice que María se levantó inmediatamente y se apresuró a la región de los cerros, a una ciudad en Judea donde vivía Isabel. Cuando llega, las dos parientes se saludan con gran alegría. Cuando se abrazan, sus hijos por nacer saltan en el vientre de sus madres. Es un momento seminal: el hijo de Isabel, el futuro Juan el Bautista, será el último y el más grande de los profetas del Antiguo Testamento, y el hijo de María, Jesús, se convertirá en el Mesías, el Salvador del mundo. Pero imagino que, cuando María se fue sola hacia la región montañosa, debía haber experimentado cierta ansiedad y aprensión. Qué significaba todo esto, su embarazo y el de su prima? Qué es lo que realmente le espera? Sin embargo, a pesar de su ansiedad, María puso toda su confianza en Dios, y nunca dejó de decir "sí" al plan de Dios, aun cuando estaba sufriendo al pie de la Cruz. Estos eventos espirituales, estos grandes momentos en la historia de nuestra salvación, son por supuesto únicos, pero también son lo que podríamos llamar 'arquetípicos'. De una forma u otra, nosotros, los cristianos, recapitulamos en nuestras propias vidas la vida, la pasión, la muerte y la resurrección que compartimos con Jesucristo. Estamos llamados a ser como María, su madre, en nuestra aceptación de la voluntad de Dios. Al igual que María, que se apresuró a ayudar a su prima estamos llamados a servir a los demás por encima de nosotros mismos y amar, incluso hasta el punto del auto-sacrificio. Seguir adelante con valentía y fe a través de las pruebas de esta vida, perdonar las injusticias cometidas contra nosotros, hacer todo lo bueno que podamos, amar como Cristo y honrar a Dios con todo nuestro corazón: este es el camino al cielo; este es el camino a la vida eterna. 3 Religious Education News. Congratulations to the children of our community who received their First Holy Communion during the month of April. Thanks to the parents and teachers for helping to make this a beautiful celebration. Registration for next year will begin in August. We also would like to invite and encourage more adults to participate in our religious education programs as catechists (teachers) and as helpers. Teaching religion to children is a wonderful way to develop your own faith and to share your experiences with others. We provide teacher guides, textbooks and classes to those who join us in this ministry. Our programs begin in September. If you re interested in being part of this important ministry, please call Magdalena Hernandez at (650) or at mhernandez@mountcarmel.org. También queremos invitar y animar a más adultos para que participen en nuestro programa de educación religiosa como catequistas (maestros) y como ayudantes. Enseñar religión a niños es una excelente manera de desarrollar su propia fe y compartir sus experiencias con los demás. Archdiocesan Annual Appeal Our assessment for this year is $72,821. This Archdiocesan tax supports all those many offices, ministries and charities that individual parishes alone cannot cover. These include the Marriage Tribunal, support of retired priests and nuns, and financial help to our Catholic Schools. To date we have received about $17,950. Catholic Charities is the primary provider of services to the most needy of our community. They support programs for the poor, legal services for immigrants, help with housing and work.
