Marcos España: Ayer y hoy 2nd edition Prentice Hall, 2010 Fotocopias Internet Textbook web page: CATALOG DESCRIPTION: SPA 318: Hispanic Civilization (F) Extensive readings on social, historical, literary, economic development in Spain, Spanish America, according to subtitle. May be repeated as subtitle changes. Prerequisite: SPA 305 (3 cr. Hr.) LAS COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this course we will be exploring the civilization of Spain from historical, social, literary, and multimedia perspectives. The Muñoz-Marcos text will give us an overview of Spain from 28,000 B.C. to the present, in terms of art, political movements, societal changes, human development and other cultural phenomena.

2 Many times a historical approach to Spanish Civilization can prove to be overwhelming: 30,000 years of history can be daunting as one tries to gain the big picture ; in this class, we will use the past as a means of understanding the present. The first part of the class (Intro, Chapters 1-7) will deal with La España de ayer. After the Midterm (Chapters 8-15), we will be studying La España de hoy. We will supplement our readings with videos, classroom reports, Internet sites, sound files, and other media. REQUIREMENTS: All classes will be conducted in Spanish, and students will be expected to express their ideas from the readings in Spanish as well. Current events will play a major role in this class; students are expected to give daily mini-reports about Spain from sources found in the Internet. A good place to start is the University of Colorado s Spain Uncovered Web Page, which contains links to government agencies, newspapers, magazines, universities, radio and television stations, political documents, etc. The URL for this page is: Students will also be expected to be familiar with key terms from their daily reading assignments, applying what they have read and/or found at the textbook web site to classroom discussion. They will also give a final presentation in Spanish on a topic of their choice related to Spanish Civilization, of approximately 7 to 10 minutes duration. ATTENDANCE POLICY: You can be absent up to three times. Save them for illnesses or family emergencies. After that, every absent will lower your final grade by a 1 point. Excused absences by the Dean, Doctor or Coach s note will be included in the three allowed absences. The college will notify me if any of you have any other prolonged excused absence. Cell phones should be turned off and out of sight during class. Text messaging in class, even for a short period of time, will count as an absence; if you have an urgent matter to attend, please leave the classroom or don t come to class that day. PARTICIPATION: EXAMS: You will be given a participation grade (15% of final grade) based on your ability to make a meaningful contributions to the class, attending, coming with your homework done, and trying your best to answer in Spanish in the oral practice section of the class. Use of cell phones or text messaging during class will count against your participation grade.

3 GRADING: There will be four examencitos, a Midterm (La España de ayer), and a Final Exam (La España de hoy). There will be no make-ups, unless there is an excuse I deem valid and there is written documentation. You will also be giving several oral presentations in class, including a final presentation on a topic of your choice related to Spain.
