SCHEIB OFFICE HOURS: TTh 1:30 3:30 pm TEXTBOOK: -Linea Directa-Dr. David Pardess, Dr. Jolie Scheib -English Spanish Dictionary Method of presentation: The course is conducted primarily in Spanish. Students are required to engage in cooperative learning activities. Class discussions are based on material from the text to improve oral comprehension and fluency in responses. Vocabulary and idiomatic phrases are practiced in order to increase and enhance effective communicative skills. Oral exposes and short written essays are assigned throughout the semester to improve student s knowledge of sentence structure and self-expression. Prerequisites: None. No previous knowledge of Spanish is required. Although this class is designed for students who have never studied Spanish before, the pace is college level and intense. Course Objective: To present an overview of the most frequently used grammatical structures in Spanish. Provide contexts and situation in class which afford the students the opportunity to practice these structures. I will offer an introduction to Hispanic culture and to give the students the opportunity to write short compositions and dialogues. The students will be expected to come to class all the time, do homework, compositions, and class participations. Students must take all quizzes, mod-term and final exam and complete class assignments in order to complete the curse. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs): 1. Students will produce simple sentences in the present progressive and periphrastic tenses. 2. Students will respond appropriately to basic questions in Spanish. 3. Students will follow simple directions in Spanish. 4. Students will produce sentences with modal and modal-like verbs. GRADING:
2 The grading scale will be as follows: The final grade will be based on objective criteria (homework, projects, compositions and exams) all assignments, homework and extra credit must be handed in on the due date (or before) for full credit. These assignments may be handed in one week late for credit. All tests and quizzes must be taken on the date specified unless other arrangements have been made with the instructor prior to that date. 2 GRADING SCALE GRADE DISTRIBUTION A B C D Homework and participation 10% Quizzes (2) 20% Midterm 30% Final 40% BELOW 60 F Cheating and plagiarism of any sort are not tolerated. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP EXAMS. If you miss an exam and have a valid, documented, collegeapproved excuse, I will give the student a make-up exam. Also, the student must me prior to the exam. First week of classes: A student must attend ALL class sessions of the course that meet during the first week of the course. Students must contact the instructor by when ill or need to be absent from class in order to avoid misunderstandings and situations that will adversely affect their grade. Students who decide to drop the class must officially withdraw and inform the professor. Students, who do not, will receive an F.
