M & W 1:00-2:40 PM and LBCC Spring 2014 T & Th 10:00-10:50 AM esaucedo@lbcc.edu Course description: Spanish 9 is an intensive study of Hispanic culture, values art and language using a variety of literary selections by famous Spanish, Latin American and Latino authors in the U.S. and a historical summary of each country studied. Student learning outcomes: upon successful completion students will be able to: 1. Formulate ideas orally at the medium intermediate level. 2. Formulate ideas in writing at the medium intermediate level. 3. Demonstrate reading comprehension at the medium intermediate level. 4. Demonstrate aural comprehension at the medium intermediate level. Method of instruction: there will be presentation/explanation by the instructor; class discussion, individual, paired and group activities about the readings, videos,movies and CD s studied in and/or outside class. Course objectives: 5. Students will be able to provide critical evaluation orally and in writing on the primary works of literature read. 6. Students will acquire an understanding of the diversity of the Hispanic world through the works of literature, music, art and movies/ videos read, listened, viewed and discussed in class. 7. Students will develop an Historical perspective and sensitivity to the Hispanic culture by comparing and contrasting the materials presented in class to their personal experiences in the U. S. 8. Through the reading and writing process and the oral discussions students will acquire the basic grammatical principles of the Spanish language and will have the ability to respond creatively and accurately to different situations, both orally and in writing. 1

2 Course requirements: attend every session on time; follow the syllabus; study the appropriate grammar sections and do the reading and workbook exercises at home; be prepared to participate in class; hand-in the homework assignments and compositions on time, late homework will not be accepted; take exams as scheduled, there will be no make-ups; listen to CD s, do dictations and self - correct at home. Attendance is mandatory for this course, since you learn by doing and interacting with others in class. More than two (2) absences will lower your participation grade by 1% per absence; three (2) consecutive absences or four (4) in any order will result in a W, before the withdrawal deadline. If you arrive late or leave early that is considered as half an absence. The Foreign Languages Department policy requires students to have all learning materials by the end of census week, failure to do so may result in a withdraw. If you wish to receive a P/NP you must request so in Admissions and Records. There is no smoking, food or drink allowed in the building/classroom.
