Attendance and Participation are critical to successful completion of this course. Participation includes your willingness and preparedness to express and share ideas and to cooperate in group activities. The Attendance and Participation grade will be calculated in strict percentage basis. Students are allowed two (2) absences per semester. For any absences beyond this, a student s FINAL GRADE will be lowered by one (1%) percentage points. Punctual arrival to class is essential. Every three (3) tardies will be counted as one (1) absence. In order to receive full credit for daily attendance, students must stay in class for the entire duration of the class period. Leaving class early for any duration of time will count as an absence. Absences will only be EXCUSED by showing proof of EMERGENCY. There are no exceptions. As per California State Law and College Policy, a student will be dropped from the course if he/she fails to show up for two consecutive class meetings, or a total of 15 hours during the entire semester, or four absences in any order. If you arrive late or leave early that is considered half an absence. If a personal or medical emergency keeps you from attending class, you must provide the professor with written documentation that is valid for the day(s) missed. No texting will be allowed during class time. The Attendance & Participation grade will be affected if students are found to be texting in class. HOMEWORK (10%) Students are to prepare all assignments before class meetings according to the course schedule. It is very important to read the assigned readings and to be prepared to participate in class discussions. Students will earn credit for completed assignments and no credit for incomplete work. Failure to submit homework assignments will be detrimental to the student s Homework portion of the grade. This can have secondary consequences since not completing the homework will also have an effect on the student s ability to participate in class, thus, also affecting the Participation grade. Late assignments will not be accepted. No exceptions. [2]
3 WRITTEN COMPOSTIONS (35%) All students will write two (2) short compositions (4-5 pages each) based on a topic of their choice limited to the countries being studied in class. All topics for the compositions must be approved by the professor. One composition will be a written analysis of one of the short stories presented in Francisco Jiménez s Cajas de cartón to be submitted during the seventh (7 th ) week of classes. The second composition will be an analysis of a film viewed (to be approved by the professor) outside of class which should focus on some of the topics discussed during the semester. The second composition will be due the fourteenth (14 th ) week of classes. Both compositions will be written in Spanish using the Modern Language Association (MLA) style formatting. Due dates for the compositions can be found on the Tentative Schedule calendar. Expectations for each written assignment will be given separately. Failure to submit one or both of the compositions will be detrimental to the student s final grade. MID-TERM EXAM (20%) The Mid-Term Exam will be administered during the tenth (10 th ) week of classes and will focus on the material covered up until that point. Expectations and format will be discussed two weeks prior to the scheduled exam date. The professor reserves the right to make changes to the schedule as necessary. FINAL EXAM (20%) The Final Exam will be administered during the last day of class. The Final Exam is comprehensive, covering material studied throughout the semester. Expectations and format will be discussed two weeks prior to the scheduled exam date. Failure to take the Final Exam will result in an F grade for the semester.
