1 SPAN 398 Advanced Spanish for Heritage/Bilingual Speakers TTh, 12:00 PM-1:15 PM, SC G008 Spring 2013 Prof. Alejandro Cuza School of Languages and Cultures, Department of Spanish and Portuguese Office hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:30 PM-2:30 PM, SC Course Description This is an advanced grammar course designed for Spanish heritage/bilingual speakers born in the US or who immigrated during early childhood. Its major goal is the teaching of advanced grammar topics in Spanish and composition skills. It is a continuation of SPAN 305 and equivalent to SPAN 302. At the end of the course, students are expected to have achieved the following: Advanced knowledge of Spanish grammar and composition. Enhanced oral, reading and writing skills. Be prepared for higher-level courses in Spanish literature, linguistics and culture. These objectives will be realized through the explicit teaching of grammatical structures, vocabulary development via cultural readings, oral presentations and writing assignments. The students will also have the opportunity to participate in a service learning program teaching Spanish to Spanish-English bilingual children in the school system. The course will be conducted exclusively in Spanish. Required Materials La lengua que heredamos (6 th ed.) by Sarah Marqués. (ISBN ). (Available in Follett s) and at the Purdue University Bookstore. Blackboard Learn: All students are required to check BlackBoard for course information and materials including but not limited to composition guidelines and grading criteria, oral presentation guidelines, and grades. Optional material (on reserve at the Hick s Undergraduate Library Reserve Desk): Hacker, Diana A Writer s Reference. Boston, MA: Bedford/St. Martin s. Course Requirements Attendance and participation 10% Exams (x 2) 30% Compositions (3) 30% Homework (8) 20% Proyecto Cultural 10% % 1
2 This course will employ a plus/minus grading system: (A+), (A), (A-), (B+), (B), (B-), (C+), (C), (C-), 0-54 (F) Final course grades cannot be changed unless there is an error. The student must present the graded materials as evidence that a mistake was made. No grade disputes will be processed during the last and first weeks of each semester. Attendance and Participation (10%): All students are required to actively participate and contribute to class discussions of readings. In order to get full points for participation, the student must always have homework prepared, be in class, ask questions, be prepared to comment on texts, contribute to lively discussions, and always speak exclusively in Spanish. Students are also expected to be present for every class meeting. Exams (30%): Written exams will include a variety of topics that are representative of the material covered in the preceding chapters. They will include grammar and vocabulary exercises, reading comprehension, writing tasks, etc. Compositions (30%): There will be three compositions (10% each) of 350 words minimum (two or three pages by hand). The composition will be written in class and handed in to the professor at the end of the class period. It will then be revised and handed back to the students with general comments. The first draft will not be graded. Students must hand the final draft on the date indicated in the syllabus. The content of the final composition must ***not*** differ from the content of the draft written in class. Only grammatical/orthographic changes are permitted. See WRITING CENTER in Blackboard for composition style sheet and other relevant information. Compositions that do not comply with the style sheet will be returned without grading. Please note that late work will not be accepted and the student will receive a grade of 0 for the corresponding composition. In cases of a medical emergency, the student must bring a doctor s note to the instructor. Homework (20%): There will be 8 homework assignments. Students are expected to hand in the homework assignments on Tuesdays. The assignments generally come from the textbook. You are expected to ask questions about the assignment before arriving to class if you do not understand the exercises. All activities must be completed to obtain all points. This is an all or nothing type of activity. Proyecto Cultural (10%): The cultural topic of interest will be chosen on the second week of classes (Thursday) in consultation with the instructor. Oral presentation is 10 min. long plus 2 min. for questions. Students must hand in to the instructor an outline one week prior to their presentation highlighting the cultural content and grammatical structures used. Please revise the folder CULTURAL PROJECT in BB for all relevant information regarding the cultural project. Please print all relevant information. 2
3 Absences and Make-up Policy UNIVERSITY AND COURSE POLICIES When you are not in class you cannot participate. Therefore, every absence after the third, whether excused or unexcused, will affect your final grade in the following way: Number of Absences Points deducted from final grade FAIL After 10 absences, excused or unexcused, you fail the course. If the absence is excused, homework assignments may be made up, but the absence will still count. An excused absence is defined as one of the following: illness, with a doctor s note (including the dr. s phone number), or a University-sponsored activity at which your attendance is mandatory (again, with documentation including the sponsor s contact information). No make-up assignments will be given without proper documentation. All the due dates of compositions and exams are provided well in advance therefore, no make-up exams will be given and no late compositions will be accepted whether your absence is excused or unexcused. Students with disabilities: If you have special needs related to a disability, which may affect your performance in this course, please speak with the instructor during the first week of classes to discuss your needs privately. Religious Holiday Policy: In the case of a religious observance, it is the responsibility of the student to speak with the instructor in advance in order to make the necessary class arrangements. Policy: communication with the instructor is restricted to administrative purposes only (e.g., making an appointment). Content questions or exams related questions will not be answered via . Those issues will be dealt during office hours only or in class. Please make sure you use a Purdue university address, provide formal salutation in your s and identified yourself with your complete name and course # (SPAN 398). Policy of Academic Honesty: Purdue University expects high level of academic honesty and integrity from its students. In this course you will be expected to turn in your own work without help from others, to acknowledge all sources of information in your assignments, and to maintain the same high level of honesty in all examinations. Cheating is not expected of any students, but in case a student violates the policy of academic honesty (i.e. cheats or commits plagiarism on any exams or other assignments), the student might receive a failing grade for the course. For further information regarding student conduct, see Sections II and III of Purdue University Regulations. 3
4 Policy on Electronic Equipment: Please turn off your cell phones before coming to class. If a cell phone rings during a class, the student that owns the phone must leave the classroom, and an absence will be counted against that student.
