1 DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES SPRING 2015 SPA Continuing Intermediate Spanish Instructor: Dr. Gonzalo Aguiar Building/Room: Marano Campus Center 210 Office Hours: MW 10:20 am-11:20 am Days/Time: MWF 11:30 am-12:25 pm Office: Marano Campus Center 250 Course Description and Goals As a continuation of Spanish 201 this course intends to achieve the following goals: Improve students' ability to comprehend spoken and written Spanish from a variety of Spanish-speaking countries. Provide with vocabulary and other rhetorical strategies in order to communicate in real life situations. Encourage students to explore/share aspects of Spanish and Latin American culture through literary texts and short films. Develop more advanced writing skills, with a particular emphasis on pre-writing activities designed to Even though the study of Spanish grammar will be greatly emphasized in class, the primary goal of the course is to develop communicative competence, that is, your ability to communicate successfully and effectively in the language. In pursuit of these goals, I will help you build grammatical tools and vocabulary development necessary to succeed in class. As a student in this class, your primary tasks are (a) to attempt to understand as much Spanish as possible during class; (b) to participate actively and enthusiastically in classroom activities; (c) to complete all homework assignments and study appropriate pages in the online textbook prior to class; (d) to attend class on a regular basis Required texts and material: IMAGINA Supersite 3.0, 3 rd edition ONLY. Textbook is absolutely optional. Instructions on how to purchase and access the supersite are on ANGEL. Grading Policy: Attendance and Participation 20% Pruebas (4)... 10% Homework 15% Compositions (3) 15% Oral Presentation. 5% Mid-Term Exam.. 15% Final Exam (cumulative). 20% 1

2 Attendance and Participation in class (20%) Attendance is mandatory for this course. Most of your listening exposure and speaking practice will occur during class time. Therefore, I expect you to be in class every day and participate actively. Every unexcused absence will count negatively towards your overall participation grade. Each class meeting you miss will result in a portion of your grade being reduced. Arriving in class after the class starts is considered a tardy. After the first unexcused absence, each additional undocumented absence will result in a two-point reduction of your overall final grade. For example if your overall average is 90% and you have three unexcused absences your final grade will be 86%. If you do miss a class, makeup work will be permitted only when the instructor is presented with acceptable documentation. Legitimate excused absences include the following: verifiable confining illness, serious verifiable family emergencies, jury duty, and military service. It is the student's responsibility to notify his/her instructor of any excused absence as far in advance as possible. Documentation for excused absences must be presented as soon as possible. The following causes will count as absences: a) Arriving to class 10 minutes late or more. Leaving class for more than 3 minutes at a time. Leaving class early without a proper justification. b) Disruptive behavior (talking, sleeping, using cell phones, stepping out of class, etc.) in class will seriously affect your participation grade. I reserve the right to ask a student to leave if her/his behavior is disruptive of the teaching and learning process. c) Chronic tardiness is detrimental to your success and does not sit well with a productive and enjoyable learning experience for the rest of the students. Three tardies = 1 absence = 3 points deducted from your Attendance/Participation grade. IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN 5 UNEXCUSED ABSENCES I WILL SERIOUSLY CONSIDER DROPPING YOU FROM THE CLASS. Active participation is vital to language learning process. Class time will be spent in a variety of activities: 1) doing one-on-one, small group, paired and whole class activities; 2) reviewing out-of-class assignments; 3) listening and answering questions over dialogues; 4) watching short films; and 5) role playing. Many activities out of the text are conversational so that you can acquire communicative competence in the long run. Activities typically move from the simpler to the more complex throughout the chapter and from chapter to chapter, building on previously learned skills. In paired and group activities, students should have an open attitude and must cooperate and contribute in a friendly manner. Students are expected to volunteer answers on a regular basis. As I said above, students are expected to speak in Spanish as much as possible in order to increase their chances not only in this class, but also in life. I truly appreciate the effort of those who come to class prepared and eager to participate. For that reason, I base my grading criteria in roughly the following components: 2

3 a) Be in class on time b) Submit and/or turn in homework assignments online in a timely fashion. c) Be willing to participate in in-class activities, such as role play, task-based activities, activities in pairs, small or large groups where communication in the target language is the main focus. d) Please expect to have your seats reassigned every time a new communicative activity starts. The purpose is to allow you to have as much exposure to other classmates opinions as possible. e) Be respectful of other people s opinions during linguistic or non-verbal interactions in class. To Conclude: All assignments should be studied before the beginning of the class for which they are scheduled. Being prepared for class, contributing to class discussions and preparing homework will boost your class participation grade and final grade. Language acquisition is a gradual process that requires that you practice on a daily basis. This makes attendance, and reading and writing outside the classroom, not only important but also essential if you really want to succeed. You should devote at least one hour a day, outside of your class time, to your assignments. Quizzes (4) 10% Quizzes are given at the beginning of class and will not take more than 15 minutes to complete. A typical quiz will consist of all or some of the following sections: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, composition and culture. No make-up quizzes will be given to students that miss class without documentation or arrive after the quiz is over. Homework (Tarea) 15% Students are responsible for preparing all reading and writing requirement for each class before coming to class. Online homework through Imagina 3 rd edition Supersite 3.0 has been assigned and should be submitted following the calendar on the syllabus (see below). Homework is due at 11:59 pm on the day assigned on the syllabus. Late homework will not be accepted and the grade will result in a 0. Compositions (3) 15% Students will be required to write three compositions throughout the semester. Composition topics may vary, yet both vocabulary and grammar for each composition will be studied well in advance. Compositions will be turned in to the instructor on the day indicated on the syllabus. Students will be evaluated on content, grammar, vocabulary, and organization. Compositions should be typewritten and double-spaced with one-inch margins and 12-point Times New Roman font. Length will be specified for each composition. Make sure compositions are written in your own words. Quote and provide references when you are using words from other sources. Only composition 1 and 2 will have a second draft. 3

4 Late Work Policy: Compositions that are turned in late will be accepted for full credit only on the day the student returns to class after an excused absence. Again, it is the student s responsibility (NOT the instructor s) to schedule the test within the required time frame. Oral Presentation 5% Students will be required to deliver a seven to ten-minute presentation on a topic based on Galería de creadores from Imagina. The student will be allowed to prepare a Power Point presentation on the topic to illustrate relevant points. However, the presentation will have no more than 5 slides, and each slide will contain no more than 15 words. Absolutely no reading during the presentation! Topics and additional details will be explained later. Exams (2) 35% There will be two written exams. The format of the exams will consist of the following sections: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, culture, and writing. An outline of the exam will always be provided before an exam. Exams are one hour long and they are cumulative. There is no make-up final exam except in cases of documented and verifiable emergency or major illness. Chances for extra credit will include attendance to the International Coffee Hour, an event sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures which will take place on Mondays during the academic semester. Details will be provided later. policy: You should check your daily for updates from the instructor. The instructor will check his at least once daily during regular business hours (from Monday to Friday) and he will usually respond to any inquiries within two (2) business days. If you have questions about what the homework is all about, you should ask a classmate or check out the syllabus. No assignment will be accepted through . ELECTRONIC DEVICE/ CELL PHONE POLICY: The use of cell phones or any other electronic communication or recording device is inappropriate and not permitted in the classroom. Message checking and texting are very obvious no matter how well students try to camouflage them, and it will have serious negative effects on students participation and final grades. Please turn off and put away your cell phones and remove earphones as you enter the classroom. Students who violate this policy will be asked to leave.
