This test s score must be submitted to your instructor during the first week of classes. COURSE GOALS AND DESCRIPTION SPAN 352 is the third level course of Spanish at American University. This class is a continuation of Spanish Intermediate II. This course is designed to enhance students fluency and writing skills in Spanish by motivating them to speak and write about topics related to Latin America and Spain. Our approach assumes that listening, speaking, writing and culture reinforce each other. The instructor acts as a facilitator, encouraging students to speak and write as much as possible. It is expected that students will make mistakes when creating with the language, as trial and error are necessary parts of language acquisition. Grammatical structures will be reviewed, but it is assumed that students have a basic knowledge of grammar to communicate effectively. Class will be conducted entirely in Spanish.

B) Compositions and writing assignments (15%) You are responsible for writing three (3) compositions during the semester. They must be typed in Spanish and double space using 12 pt. font Times New Roman. The instructor will chose the topics, or give a choice of topics, based on material covered in class. For each composition, you will write a draft and submit it per class schedule. The instructor will return the draft to you with the required corrections per the symbols correction sheet and notes about your composition content. Then, you must resubmit A FINAL VERSION with all indicated corrections completed by the due date ALONG WITH THE ORIGINAL DRAFT. The grade for each composition will be divided between the draft and the final version. The draft will be worth 25% and the final version will be worth 25%. These compositions will be graded on the use of complex grammatical and vocabulary structures, the material covered in class and the content. Please take these compositions as an opportunity to experiment and learn how to say new things in Spanish.
4 In addition to the compositions, your instructor will assign other homework like Tareas! (short writing assignments), discussion board, etc. This additional homework is a great opportunity to practice some grammar structures and vocabulary from the chapter. C) Group Work Debates (15%) The Entrevista/ debate will be completed during the last two weeks of the semester. The debate (10 minutes) is on a topic related to the semester materials. The point of the exercise is to display your oral performance in Spanish. Reading is not accepted. If you begin to read your work/ debate, you will be requested by your instructor to stop. Work will be graded for clarity, fluency, pronunciation, grammatical accuracy, debate and presentation. This oral entrevista/ debate has a protocol to follow. You will receive instructions for the Entrevista/ debate Presentation Protocol by your instructor during the first month of the semester. NO MAKE UPS WILL BE ALLOWED FOR THE ENTREVISTA/ DEBATE PRESENTATION. D) Three Pruebas cortas (30%) You will have three Pruebas cortas (quizzes) during the semester after finishing each chapter. These Pruebas cortas will include material presented in class. Details about the material, format, etc. will be given by your instructor. E) Final exam (20%). The final exam is a composition. Your instructor will give you details about the final test during the semester. No make-ups will be given. GRADING SCALE Scale = A = A = B = B = B = C = C = C = D Below 64 = F Language and Resources Center (LRC) This is the University s foreign language laboratory located in the basement of Asbury building - Hall North. For information, call (202) or visit Both the Language Resource center and Anderson Computer Lab offer Microsoft Word in Spanish, which is a helpful resource to check spelling and grammar when writing compositions in Spanish. Electronic devices like cellular phones, laptop computers, electronic organizers (PDA), I pods, CD and DVD players, head phones, etc must be turned off and kept out of sight at all times. Violations of behavior policies will result in being asked to leave the class and an absence will be entered for that class period. This will affect your participation and class-activities grades. Problems Students with concerns or comments should first speak with his or her instructor, who will do everything that s/he can to address all concerns, questions, comments, and suggestions presented by students. You may also or phone your instructor to schedule a private meeting during his or her office hours. Issues that cannot be addressed by the instructor should be brought to the attention of Dr. Gail Riley in the Department of Language and Foreign Studies (griley@american.edu). 6 EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS In the event of a declared pandemic (influenza or other communicable disease), American University will implement a plan for meeting the needs of all members of the university community. Should the university be required to close for a period of time, we are committed to ensuring that all aspects of our educational programs will be delivered to our students. These may include altering and extending the duration of the traditional term schedule to complete essential instruction in the traditional format and/or use of distance instructional methods. Specific strategies will vary from class to class, depending on the format of the course and the timing of the emergency. Faculty will communicate classspecific information to students via AU and Blackboard, while students must inform their faculty immediately of any absence due to illness. Students are responsible for checking their AU regularly and keeping themselves informed of emergencies. In the event of a declared pandemic or other emergency, students should refer to the AU Web site (www. prepared. american.edu) and the AU information line at (202) for general university-wide information, as well as contact their faculty and/or respective dean s office for course and school/ college-specific information.
