1 SPANISH 201 MTWTh INTERMEDIATE SPANISH SPRING 2007 Professor: Elizabeth Pettinaroli Office: Buckman 223 Office hours: M, W 12-1:30 y por cita pettinarolie@rhodes.edu Prerequisites: Spanish 102, or Placement Test Description: Spanish 201 is an intensive review course that prepares students to acquire a deeper understanding of Spanish grammar and its appropriate, contextual use. Replicating the experience of complete immersion as close as possible, students will refine reading, writing, speaking and listening skills by working in a Spanish-only classroom environment. A key goal at this level is to broaden students cultural horizons and knowledge of the Spanish-speaking world through classroom activities focusing on language as well as through the study of short literary and journalistic readings. Students will hone their writing skills in compositions, their aural/speaking skills through varied activities that include participation in Hispanic related events in Memphis. Upon successful completion of Intermediate Spanish, students will be prepared to enter Advanced Spanish, to study the intricacies of the language, and to begin to delve in literary analysis at a higher level. Required Texts and Materials: 1. Pasajes: Lengua. 5 th ed. Bretz et al. Boston: McGraw-Hill, Cuaderno de práctica. 3. English Grammar for Students of Spanish. 5 th ed. Spinelli. Olivia and Hill Press, Other readings Grade breakdown: Participation, Homework, Quizzes 20% Tests & Final 40% Compositions & PB Wiki Journal 20% Oral Presentations 10% Cultural Activities 10% 1. Participation, Homework, Quizzes (20%). Participation. Your attendance, daily preparation, and active participation in class will not only contribute to your learning, but are also important factors in determining your grade. Students are expected to participate in Spanish only during each class period. The instructor will monitor student participation on a daily basis. You will lose points for speaking in English during class. Homework. For each chapter, exercises will be assigned from the Cuaderno de práctica. Homework is due every Thursday-- incomplete or late work cannot be accepted. 2. Tests (40%). There will be four (4) tests that will cover three chapters each approximately. Each will include a dictation or listening comprehension section, a grammar-centered section, a reading comprehension exercise and a short composition. Unfortunately, no make-up tests or exams will be given without a documented excuse. The Department s policy dictates that exams be rescheduled only if the student has an official university excuse (academic business, athletic team travel, religious holiday, death in family) and if arrangements have been made prior to the exam. Please contact the Office of the Dean of Students or your Academic Advisor to document your excused absence. 3. Compositions & PB Wiki Journal (20%). There will be two (2) graded compositions written in class (use of a dictionary is allowed) and based on the lecturas and discussions in class. They will be corrected by the instructor using symbols, and then rewritten by the student guided by the symbols. Composition grades are based on the use of grammar and vocabulary studied in the course as well as content and organization. The grades for the compositions will be based on both the first draft and the rewritten final version.

2 No outside help (including proofreading by tutors or friends) is permitted on compositions. The use of translators human or electronic is not allowed when writing compositions or any other work for the course, and will be considered in violation of the Honor Code. You will also keep a journal using PB Wiki, a collaborative, web based writing tool. PB Wiki will give you the opportunity to write and reflect upon the grammatical and cultural aspects of Spanish language and Hispanic culture you will be learning through the semester. In turn, it will prepare you for writing your compositions. Each week, you will be responsible to write and post your personal entry (no less than 250 words) on any matter encountered in class, or in your cultural activities outside of class (see below). In addition, you will be responsible to respond to one of your colleagues entries, addressing 1. grammar; 2. content; 3. suggestions for improvement. You may not comment on an entry which has already received comments. Our class s site is 4. Oral presentation (10%). Throughout the semester, each member of the class will give a brief report (5 minutes) on a topic related to the culture or history of the Spanish-speaking populations of the world. This should be a topic which interests you enough that you'll want to conduct some research. 5. Cultural Activities (10%). Cultural Event: During the course of the semester you will have the opportunity to participate in many activities which will expose you to various aspects of Hispanic cultures. You must attend a total of two different activities. Among these activities can be events hosted by in town by organizations like Latino Memphis, or other cultural venues in town such as art exhibits, speakers on Hispanic matters at Rhodes College and University of Memphis, etc. This should be completed before November 15. As a class, we will gather a list of activities during the first week of the semester. This activity serves as practice for the compositions and PB Wiki Journal. Course Policies: The Honor Code. Spanish 201 students are expected to comply with the Rhodes Honor Code. All work is to be pledged and completed by the student without assistance from classmates, advanced Spanish students, or native speakers, unless otherwise indicated by the instructor. Any violations of the Code in or outside class will be brought to the attention of the Honor Council for appropriate action. For any questions about the Honor Policy as it relates to SPAN 201, please contact the Honor Council. Attendance and Tardiness. Attendance is obligatory for Spanish 201. In order for students to progress in their understanding and speaking of Spanish, they must be exposed to hearing and speaking it on a regular basis. You are allowed three (3) free absences. Beyond that, for each additional absence, one percentage point will be deducted from your final grade. An excess of six (6) absences, excused or unexcused, will result in a withdrawal from or failure in the course. Students are expected to arrive to class on time. Being late to class counts as half an absence. Assignment Deadlines and Make-up Work. Assignments are due by the beginning of class as indicated on the syllabus. No late work and no make-up work will be accepted. Students who will not be in class should complete their assignments ahead of time. Your responsibility: For each credit hour, it is expected that you spend an average of 2 hours at home on homework and class preparation. You are expected to come to class having prepared the material on the syllabus for that day and ready to participate actively in class. Class will be conducted only in Spanish. It is your responsibility to let your instructor know if you do not understand or to consult him/her during office hours with any questions or concerns.
