1 Español IV Sr. Slattery En nuestra clase continuamos el estudio de español con la ayuda de varias lecturas de España y Latinoamérica. Empezaremos con autores tempranos ( El Cid ), pero la mayoría de los autores serán de los siglos contemporáneos, o sea XX y XXI. Algunos ejemplos de obras y autores siguen (usualmente leeremos sólo un fragmento de la obra si es una novela u obra teatral). Como Agua para Chocolate por Laura Esquivel Cien Años de Soledad por Gabriel García Márquez La Casa de los Espíritus por Isabel Allende Las Aventuras del Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha por Miguel de Cervantes Poesía por: Neruda, Lorca, Darío, Ibarbourou, Mistral, Martí etc. Cuentos por Ana María Matute, Julio Cortázar, Alejo Carpentier, Jorge Luis Borges, y otros. Libro de texto: ENCUENTROS MARAVILLOSOS Libros de lectura: EL CID, DON QUIJOTE SE NECESITA un BUEN DICCIONARIO en casa. Recomiendo: Random House Spanish-English English-Spanish Dictionary o University of Chicago Spanish Dictionary Los capítulos de Encuentros Maravillosos incluyen repasos de gramática. También, vamos a utilizar Intermediate Spanish Grammar por Gilda Nissenberg. Es un buen recurso para repasar la gramática que han estudiado en los otros niveles. Las lecturas nos darán mucha oportunidad de conversar sobre ideas que les interesan a los jóvenes de hoy. Todos los estudiantes deben esperar aprender mucho vocabulario, leer y escribir en español, repasar gramática avanzada y hablar y escuchar la lengua tanto como sea posible. 2 Tarea y participación En la clase de español IV, haremos un poco de todo; aprender canciones, poemas y dramas, investigar cultura, historia, sucesos corrientes espero que disfrutes de la clase. Necesitamos la ayuda y cooperación de todos para tener una clase exitosa y divertida. NB: WE will abide by the RCHS Honor Code and World Languages Dept. plagiarism policies. All transgressions will be reported to the Honor Council. Use of translators must be limited to searching one word at a time.

3 AP Spanish Sr. Slattery Bienvenidos a la clase de AP! In this class, we will be preparing for the AP test to be given in May. It is assumed that all students have a good foundation in Spanish, and a real desire to excel in all four communication skills: listening, speaking, written and oral. Like the AP Spanish exam, the class will be difficult. Students will need to keep up with the assignments, and use class time efficiently. I hope the class will also be fun.

4 Materials We will be using the book Triangulo. It closely follows the AP exam and is a good resource for preparing students. We will also use A Que Si for grammar review, as well as a number of other books and resources. As time permits, we will do several works of literature from Modern Spanish Prose and Literatura Moderna Hispanica. Besides purchasing Triangulo, you will need a composition notebook. Grading Grades will be calculated on a pure-points basis, and will consist of tests, quizzes, compostions, recordings and homework. Tests and quizzes- The grades will be calculated on a point system. You will have many 10-point quizzes during the year, as well as several chapter tests during each grading period. Tests will be scored from points, depending on the length. At the end of grading period, your point total will be added up and divided by the total number of points possible. Recordings and compositions For each chapter of Triangulo, you will make recordings and write short essays or compositions. There will also be other compostions assigned during the year. Occasionally, the compositions will be graded with the errors coded so that you will have an opportunity to make the appropriate corrections. Other times your first attempt will be graded. Homework You should plan to spend minutes a night. Assignments will come primarily from Triangulo and grammar review packets. It is essential that you stay on top of the homework so that when we go over it in class, you can follow along and ask questions. Each chapter of Triangulo also has a vocabulary section. We will have frequent quizzes. Participation There are two sections on the AP exam that test oral proficiency. It is essential that you work on oral skills whenever possible. You will have plenty of opportunity to speak Spanish in class through exercises and conversations. Please do your best to take advantage of this. Extra Help/Tutoring We ll be doing frequent grammar reviews during the year. If you ever need any extra help, I ll be glad to work with you. Outside Activities There are always things going on in the area involving the Latino community. I encourage you to participate and get involved as much as possible. Besides being fun

5 and learning about the cultures of other countries, it will help your Spanish. I ll let you know of activities as I hear about them. Please let me know if you have ideas for activities or guest speakers. Class Rules 1. Show respect for yourself and others in the room. 2. Be prepared.
