3 Page Three Reflecting on God s Word can remember as a child being afraid of the dark. Not all the time just usually after seeing a horror movie. For nights after, would peer into the darkness, trying to make sure there was nothing out there. Even as an adult there have been times when walked through a dark place feeling an uneasiness that was hard to shake. Easter in the Gospel of John begins in the dark. Night still holds the earth in its embrace. Darkness also gripped the hearts of Jesus followers the darkness of grief, sorrow, and hopelessness. Jesus of Nazareth who had preached in a way no one else ever had, who had worked deeds of great power by curing the sick, healing lepers, giving sight to the blind, lifting up the lame, and who had even called the dead back to life had been crucified and laid in the tomb. A large stone had been rolled in front of the entrance, death s final punctuation mark. Only John tells us there was a garden where he was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. From this garden God decided to begin creation anew, so while it was still dark God breathed once again into a human figure, and the new Adam was raised up and would never die. Not all darkness is to be feared. Sometimes it may even be necessary, summoning God to create once again, dispelling the shadow of death and despair that can settle over the human heart. Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios Recuerdo que cuando pequeño le tenía miedo a la oscuridad. No siempre, pero casi siempre después de haber visto una película de terror. En las noches siguientes trataba de escudriñar la noche para asegurarme de que por ahí no había nada. Aun de adulto han habido veces en que caminando por algún lugar oscuro he sentido una zozobra no fácil de sacudir. En el Evangelio según san Juan la Pascua comienza de noche. La oscuridad aún se apodera de la tierra. La oscuridad también atenazó el corazón de los discípulos de Jesús la oscuridad de la aflicción, de la pena, de la desesperanza. Jesús de Nazaret que había predicado como ningún otro, que había hecho obras prodigiosas curando a los enfermos, sanando a los leprosos, devolviendo la vista a los ciegos, haciendo caminar a los paralíticos y hasta devolviendo la vida a los muertos había sido crucificado y puesto en un sepulcro. Una piedra grande cerraba la entrada del sepulcro, que era ya el último signo de la muerte. Juan nos dice que el sepulcro estaba excavado en una roca, donde nadie había sido sepultado todavía. Desde la oscuridad de este sepulcro Dios decidió comenzar una nueva creación; sopló su aliento en una persona humana, como lo había hecho a principio de la creación, y el nuevo Adán resucitó de entre los muertos para no morir ya más. No hay que tenerle miedo a toda clase de oscuridad. Algunas veces hasta pudiera ser necesaria y desde ahí pedirle a Dios que nos vuelva a crear, que disipe las sombras de la muerte y la desesperación que pueden precipitarse sobre el corazón humano.

4 Page Four RCA: Reflections from the Elect truly believe in the Roman Catholic Church. always felt that there was a part of me missing. The calling has been there, but truly believe it is time to confirm my faith to God. am ready to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. have come to realize so many things in the RCA program. Questions have been answered and understood. know where our faith started and the true meaning of the Sacraments of Christian nitiation. God has taken me by the hand. Without Him guiding me, wouldn t be here. My faith has grown greatly and will continue to grow. Now, can guide my children and help them better understand our wonderful faith. have learned that becoming a Catholic is what is in my heart. have learned God s rules to eternal life. My new life will help me to be a better person. t will help me to raise my children with faith and hope. Meghann Garcia Donna Quevedo wanted to receive these sacraments because wanted to renew myself. was feeling empty inside and think religion could fill the emptiness. gained so much information on all the sacraments and ve learned some prayers as well. ve also learned about important people in the Bible. think my new life will help me to feel liberated. will feel closer to God. will feel so refreshed and thankful. My new life will be more peaceful and guided because will be more enlightened of God s words. Nadia Marroquin wanted to receive the sacraments of Christian nitiation to be part of community/ Church and to have a goal in my life. have learned the beginnings of the Catholic Church and have a better understanding of what it means to be a Catholic. 5 Page Five The fourth graders have been busy learning and exploring in all of their classes. They recently put all of their knowledge to the test during Terra Nova week. The worked really hard to show how much they have learned throughout their years at St. Leonard. After rigorous mornings of testing we were able to do some fun Spring crafts and activities and we even spent time with our Preschool- 3 buddies. We love reading them books! The fourth graders have been working really hard at being confident readers and writers. They have really shown progress is both classes and are enjoying reading novels and writing essays. Our second novel study this year includes the sequel to our first story Holes, called Small Steps. Our second novel study group is reading Esio Trot, another novel by Roald Dahl. They are learning to think analytically and express their thoughts through discussion. n History we have moved on to studying the Southwest Region. We are learning about the environment, economy, and people of this region. n Science we are enjoying learning about animals and their environment. n Religion class we have been keeping a calendar throughout Lent where we write one good deed that we have done for each day. We have been reflecting on what it means to be a good Catholic and follow God s Commandments. Eucharistic Adoration Parishioners are invited every First Friday of the month, from 12pm to 7pm, for Eucharistic Adoration of the Most Holy Blessed Sacrament. So that the Blessed Sacrament is never left alone during this time, we have a sign up form for those who can commit to be present for a specific hour each month. Currently, we are looking to fill the one and two o clock time slots. Registration and Offering Envelopes All parishioners of St. Leonard are encouraged to register and to use the offering envelopes or GiveCentral, online giving. n an effort to keep our records current, to better assist you, and to reduce mailing costs, please make us aware of any changes. PLEASE NOTE parishioners who do not use their envelopes or contribute with a check, online, or in any manner in which they can be identified, for two quarters, are placed on an inactive status and eventually removed from the system. During the past six weeks, our parish community has prayed, fasted and given alms with a special focus on the poorest members of our global community. Our lives were touched by stories from Burkina Faso, East Timor, Lesotho, Dominican Republic, Pakistan and the United States. Through our Lenten prayers and donations, we have touched the lives of millions of people served by Catholic Relief Services, our representative to the poorest communities in the world. Please return your Rice Bowl next weekend, April 6-7. Rice bowls, with your donation inside, will be brought up to the altar at the time of the Offertory.
