3 Week of August 3, 2014 Page Three La reflexión esperaba para este boletín no llegó. En su lugar, estamos revisitando boletines del pasado. The reflection expected for this bulletin did not arrive. In its place we are revisiting some old bulletins (This letter was first published August 5, 2012:) Dear friends, The other morning, a kid was outside the rectory at 6 am, skate boarding around on the streets. You are up really early, I called out to him. He responded, I m bored. He is 17 years old. He represents a difficult economic situation teenagers face throughout our neighborhood. He doesn t have a summer job, and will just hang out on the streets. In fact, I read the other day jobs for teenagers are unavailable throughout the City of Chicago. In the newspaper on July 4th, the Chicago Tribune reported: In 1994, more than half of teens 16 or older had summer jobs. By 2010, only about one-quarter did. So, without any job to occupy their time while out of school, teenagers hang out and just chill, according to the report. Worse for our neighborhood, the cuts in funding to the Park and other agencies who normally work with our youth, are offering fewer opportunities for sports and activities. Idle time for a teenager is not healthy for their personal development, nor is it a just response to kids who want to grow up. According to our parish priorities, our parish leadership identifies youth as a top concern. In light of the needs of youth, our parish is working with many creative projects and programs to keep our young people busy, off the streets and engaged or focused on their goals in life. Young people desire an education, employment and dream of being responsible to be happy with life. But they need mentoring, and they need adults to keep them safe and guide them in their development. In light of our mission, our parish works to develop a budget to care for them. We work to take care of our parish buildings where youth gather. We continue to look for foundations and financial support to make sure our youth have opportunities. This summer, our partners, including the Peace and Education Coalition, provide grants to hire and mentor youth. We collaborate with other agencies, like Instituto del Progresso Latino, to get to know employers so we can provide more opportunities for youth. Working with Boys Town provides much needed guidance for youth. And our parish has a staff of 26 youth workers mentoring about three hundred youth in Camp Imagination and other activities. All this and still there is a kid on the street at 6 am needing attention. The impact of caring for our youth has great implications for our neighborhood. Violence is reduced, and kids are kept safer. It might seem like a small effort in the midst of so much need, but the results are perhaps bigger then you might imagine. Thank God for those working to keep our kids occupied this summer, providing mentoring and direction for them. Thank God for your parish financial support to care for our children and offer some hope for their families. Sincerely, Fr. Bruce Again, in 2014, we have 56 teens and young adults involved in summer work projects. Thank you for your support and prayers. Estaba patinando en la calle. Le dije: Es muy temprano. Y me respondió: Estoy aburrido. Tiene 17 años. Es una buena muestra la difícil situación económico por la que están pasando los jóvenes del barrio. No tiene un trabajo para el verano y está ahí, en la calle, sin nada que hacer. De hecho, el otro día leí que en Chicago no había este año trabajos disponibles para jóvenes. El chicago Tribune del 4 de julio decía que en 1994 más de la mitad de los jóvenes de 16 años para arriba tenían un trabajo en verano. Pero en 2010 apenas lo tuvieron un 25%. Así, sin trabajo para llenar su tiempo cuando no tienen escuela, los jóvenes van a la calle a pasar el tiempo, según el periódico. En nuestro barrio la situación es peor porque los cortes en el presupuesto del Parque y de las otras agencias que trabajan generalmente con los jóvenes, hace que se estén ofreciendo menos posibilidades de deportes y actividades para ellos. Ese tiempo vacío y sin sentido no es bueno para el desarrollo personal de los jóvenes ni es una forma de atender a los jóvenes que desean crecer. De acuerdo con las prioridades de la parroquia, los jóvenes son una de nuestras preocupaciones principales. A la luz de sus necesidades, nuestra parroquia está trabajando con muchos proyectos y programas orientados a mantener a los jóvenes ocupados, fuera de la calle y comprometidos y orientados a conseguir sus objetivos vitales. Los jóvenes desean conseguir una buena educación, un empleo y sueñan con ser responsables para ser felices en la vida. Pero necesitan acompañamiento y necesitan adultos que les hagan sentirse seguros y les orienten en su camino. A la luz de esta misión, la parroquia trabaja para tener un presupuesto que posibilite esa atención. Trabajamos para que los edificios de la parroquia en que se reúnen los jóvenes estén en buenas condiciones. Seguimos buscando fundaciones y apoyos financieros que hagan posible que los jóvenes tengan las oportunidades que se merecen. Este verano nuestros colaboradores, entre los que está la Peace and Education Coalition, ofrecen becas para contratar y orientar a jóvenes. Colaboramos con otras agencias, como el Instituto del Progreso Latino, para entrar en contacto con empresarios que puedan dar a los jóvenes más oportunidades. Colaboramos con SOS Children s Village que ofrece la orientación que tanto necesitan los jóvenes. Y la parroquia tiene un equipo de 26 jóvenes trabajadores que están acompañando a unos 300 jóvenes en Camp Imagination y otras actividades. Todos estos esfuerzos y todavía veo a un joven en la calle a las 6 de la mañana que necesita ayuda. El hecho de cuidar de nuestros jóvenes tiene importantes consecuencias para nuestro barrio. Hay menos violencia y los jóvenes están más seguros. Puede parecer que es un esfuerzo demasiado pequeño entre tanta necesidad pero los resultados son quizá mayores de lo que podemos imaginar. Doy gracias a Dios por todos los que trabajan para que nuestros jóvenes tengan trabajo este verano y ofreciéndoles acompañamiento y orientación. Doy gracias a Dios por su apoyo económico a la parroquia para que podemos cuidar de nuestros jóvenes y ofrecer esperanza a las familias. Nuevamente, este verano 2014, tenemos 56 jóvenes envueltos en proyectos de trabajo. Gracias por su apoyo y sus oraciones. Sinceramente, P. Bruce

Summer Journal, 2014, week five: Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom. George Washington Carver Its just a month from the start of the new Public School Year. And many of you don t want to think about school yet, but its always a good idea to reflect, even on topics we don t find pleasant. So think a bit: What value do you see to education? Why is it important FOR YOU? What makes school exciting for you? What do you find most difficult about school? What doors do you think education will unlock for you? YOUTH IN THE SUMMER The youth of the Parish are keeping themselves busy. The weeks this summer have plenty of activity being shown by the kids at Casa Romero and the parish Youth Council. Youth at Casa Romero are enjoying the summer by having pool days at Davis Square Park three times a week. Kids Café is also open during the summer, kids can still enjoy a meal with friends as they enjoy their summer. The Parish Youth Council have been enjoying their summer with sport days and outings. The first half of summer has consisted of mostly sport days, but the other half will see members spend time at Millennium Park, having a beach day, and have recently gone to a White Sox game on a cool summer afternoon. The Next Sport days are August 19 Go Sox Go! (July 23) (soccer) and August 26 (basketball) both at 5 pm in the parking lot and then behind the office respectively. The Musicians are busy as well. Lessons are still given for youth that are learning to play musical instruments in the community engagement program. The program offers a wide variety of instruments to learn ranging from guitar to trumpet. The Marimba Ensemble as always are busy preparing for their 2014 summer trip to Florida and Georgia. The Ensemble will be performing at Fiesta Del Sol on August 3 rd before they depart from Chicago. Another summer, another great showing of youth power. - Jorge Ocampo Marimba Ensemble members performed at JAZZ FEST in Humboldt Park on July 19.
