1 Home-School Connection Dear Family Member: This week we re reading Kitten s First Full Moon. The story s about a little kitten who thinks the full moon is a bowl of milk. So the kitten tries different ways to reach the bowl of milk. This is called cause and effect. I wonder what other ways the kitten will try to get the milk. 10 What Lights Up the Moon? What do you see when you look up at the moon? 2 The Moon Today the moon rocks are in a museum. The astronauts learned a lot about the moon. They brought moon rocks back to Earth. If you are lucky, you might see the moon rocks one day. 15

11 People watched the astronauts on TV. They leaped up and clapped when they saw them walk on the moon. Another astronaut walked on the moon with Neil Armstrong. 14 On some nights, the moon looks like a big round ball. The moon is far away from Earth. 3 The Moon

12 On some nights, the moon looks curved and thin. On some nights, you don t see the moon at all. But it is still there! This is a crescent moon. 4 The Moon The astronauts landed safely on the moon. Two astronauts climbed down the ladder and stepped on the moon. Astronaut Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon. 13

13 The astronauts went to the moon in a spacecraft like this. In 1969 three men went to moon. The men were called astronauts. 12 Earth sun moon The sun only lights up half of the moon. 14 Why Does the Moon Change? The moon moves around Earth. Each trip takes about one month. As the moon moves, its shape seems to change. We see the same changes every month. Full Moon 6 The Moon A telescope makes the moon look bigger. People looked at the moon through telescopes. But they dreamed of going to the moon to learn more. 11

15 Who Landed on the Moon? Long ago, people asked questions about the moon. What was the moon made of? Does it have good or poor soil? Can anything grow there? Some people thought the moon looked like a man s face. 10 Sometimes we see only part of the moon. After a few nights, we see more. Finally, it looks like a big circle. It is a full moon. 16 Long ago, Native Americans gave a name to each full moon. The moon in June was called the Strawberry Moon.
