1 Kindergarten K-3 Summer Literacy Skills Track the words. (Point to each word) Remember to say the beginning sound of a word you don t know and look at the picture to help. (Getting mouth ready) Make predictions based on the title, cover, illustrations, and text. What is the story about? (main idea) Who are the characters? Where does the story take place? (setting) What is the title? Who is the author/wrote the story? Who is the illustrator/drew the pictures? Is the book fiction or nonfiction/a story or informational/real or makebelieve? Why is this story funny? Do you like this book? Why or why not? Which page is your favorite? Why? Retell the story to me. First Grade All of The above plus... What do you predict will happen next? What is the main idea of the book? What is the problem in the story? How did they solve it?(solution) How are these two books alike? How are they different? (compare and contrast) Tell me three things about the main character. Tell me three things you learned about. What lesson did you learn from this story? Why do you think? What do you think this word means? Can you make any connections to this book? What happened in the beginning, the middle, and the end?

What does the word mean? Use context clues (sentences near the word in the book) to help figure out the meaning. What kind of literature is this? Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? Give me an example of. Does the author state his/her opinion at all? Show me evidence from the text. Tell me a text connection you made. (text to self/text to text or text to world) Why do you think?
