3 Read As the children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem solving ability. Respond to the Text Personal Response Invite children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking whether they would like to live in a tree, and why. Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text A tree can be a home for a bird; a squirrel; many bugs, such as bees and caterpillars; and a girl. Bees live in a hive. Caterpillars live in a tree and can eat its leaves. Trees can be homes for many living things. Trees provide food for some living things, too. Tree houses are fun because the people in them get a chance to be in the world of nature. The pictures show what living things make their homes in trees. The pictures show how living creatures use trees. The author s attitude is that trees are important and useful Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Identify the period and question mark, and explain what they signal. Then identify the ellipses, and explain that they signal that the sentence continues onto the next page. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Have children listen for words that begin with the same sound. Tell children to raise their hands if the words begin with the same sound, and keep their hands in their laps if the beginning sound is different. Say pairs of words, including: abeja and muchos, viven and ver, puede and pajarito, colmena and orugas, ardilla and árbol. Blend the syllables Say words syllable by syllable and ask children to say the words. Begin with ár-bol. Qué palabra es? (árbol) Continue with these words: ho-gar, puede, pa-ja-ri-to, col-me-na. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension Skill Details Explain that details tell important information about a topic. The topic is the subject of a book, or what the book is about.
