2 Pg. 1 T WENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Prophecy Causes Indigestion? I say to myself, I will not mention him, I will speak in his name no more. But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; I grow weary holding it in, I cannot endure it (JER. 20). Jeremiah struggles to speak in the Lord s name because of what it costs him. Many mock him because of his message and perhaps because of the way that he delivers it. He must cry out. Indeed, serving as a prophet of the Lord can cause us great difficulty. Perhaps the example of parents with their children illustrates this. I visited one family where a mother of many struggled to remind her teenage children of their obligations to serve in the community. This particular family took responsibility for cleaning the streets in their area. For some reason, perhaps because of the characteristic foolishness of youth, they preferred to walk the streets like gangsters rather than clean the streets like Christians. Yet, she spoke with so much force and passion, that they would ultimately obey, even as they complained while they did it. I personally believe that they also listened to their own consciences and acted on their natural ability to do good. Many times, the people to whom the Lord sends a crying prophet do not listen and do not obey the Lord. What is a prophet to do? If one is truly dedicated and open to the power of the Holy Spirit, nothing can stop such a one from speaking on the Lord s behalf not even themselves. Like Jeremiah, to be silent when they are prompted by the Lord to speak can be painful, like fire in the heart. I like to call this holy indigestion. May we all be filled with such power so that we can prophecy the Lord s message of love, mercy, repentance, and service! Fr. Pg. 2 Pero si digo: No le recordaré ni hablaré más en su nombre, esto se convierte dentro de mí como fuego ardiente encerrado en mis huesos; hago esfuerzos por contenerlo, y no puedo. (Jer.20) A Jeremías se le dificulta hablar en el nombre del Señor, porque le costo. Muchos se burlaron a causa de su mensaje y tal vez debido en la forma que lo transmitió. Él seguro "grito". En efecto, servir como un profeta del Señor nos puede causar grandes dificultades. Quizás el ejemplo de los padres con sus hijos ilustra esto. Visité una familia donde la madre de muchos se esforzaba por recordarle a sus hijos adolescentes de su obligación de servir en la comunidad. Esta familia en particular tomó la responsabilidad de limpiar las calles en su área. Por alguna razón, tal vez a causa de la necedad característica de la juventud, prefirieron caminar por las calles como pandilleros en lugar de limpiar las calles como Cristianos. Sin embargo, ella hablaba con tanta fuerza y pasión, que acabarían obedeciendo, aun cuando se quejaban mientras lo hacían. Personalmente, creo que ellos también escucharon a su conciencia y actuaron en su capacidad natural para hacer el bien. Muchas veces, a las personas a las que el Señor envía un profeta llorando no escuchan y no obedecen al Señor. Qué es lo que un profeta debe hacer? Si uno está verdaderamente dedicado y abierto al poder del Espíritu Santo, nada puede detener a tal persona de hablar en nombre del Señor... ni siquiera de sí mismos. Como Jeremías, guardar silencio cuando se le pide por el Señor hablar puede ser doloroso, como el fuego en el corazón. A esto le llamo "indigestión santa." Que todos seamos llenos de ese poder para que podamos profetizar el mensaje del Señor del amor, la misericordia, el arrepentimiento, y el servicio!
