2 Alimentar a nuestras mascotas by Dizzy Redstill Build Background Read the title to the children and talk with them about what the boy and girl in the cover are doing. Ask children about pets. Anticipate the text with questions such as: Qué mascota están alimentando los niños de la portada? Qué mascotas tienen ustedes? Con qué las alimentan? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Point out the repetition of the words Podemos alimentar in each sentence. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that in this book, children feed different kinds of pets. On every page they give a pet something to eat. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Qué mascota ven? Los niños dicen: Podemos alimentar al conejo. Con qué alimentan al conejo? 3 Read Now have children read Alimentar a nuestras mascotas softly while pointing to each word. Observe children as they read. Respond to the Text Personal Response Invite children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting. Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Children feed a rabbit, a fish, a turtle, a hamster, and a lizard they have as pets. Each animal gets its own kind of food. Pets need food to eat. Animals need different kinds of food. It s fun to take care of animals with your friends. The photos show children feeding different pets. You can see the kind of food each animal likes to eat in the photos. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Practice letter/sound relationships such as recognizing and using beginning consonant sounds and the letters that represent them. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables in words from the book (conejo, tortuga, hámster, lagarto). Have them clap on each syllable: co-ne-jo, tor-tu-ga, háms-ter, la-gar-to. Matching Letters Materials: upper and lower case magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. 4 Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 24.6 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension Skill Conclusions Tell children that they can use details to figure out more about the text.
