2 EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2 FEBRUARY 26, 2017 Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Today s Gospel is so beautiful. I encourage you to read Matthew 6:24-34 and rest in God s peace and care. Jesus is telling us to trust in Him-- even when we think we have every reason to fear. As we prepare for Lent to begin on March 1, we remember how we always need to be close to God and trust in Him. We ask God s forgiveness for our sins and trust in His loving mercy. In learning to trust God more and grow closer to Him, we need to separate ourselves from worldly distractions in order to give that energy to God. During Lent we give up something, like chocolate, or do something, like going to Mass every day, so we can focus more on God. Every time we have the temptation to go towards the comfort of these worldly pleasures but instead turn to God, we grow in relationship with Him. Some other tidbits about Lent: You may know that on Fridays during Lent we fast from meat, but did you know that for people ages 18-59, on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, we also have a more general fast? This means that on those two days we eat one full meatless meal and two small meatless meals if needed (which, when added together, are smaller than a full meal), with no snacks in between. This helps us to focus more on God and have to rely on Him for strength throughout the day. Busquen primero el Reino de Dios y su justicia, y todas estas cosas se les darán por añadidura. Jesús nos está rogando confiar en Él-- aún cuando pensamos que tenemos cada razón para tener miedo. En preparar para el comienzo de la Cuaresma este 1 de Marzo, recordamos que siempre necesitamos estar juntos con Dios y confiar en Él. Pedimos el perdón de Dios por nuestros pecados y confiamos en Su misericordia amorosa. En aprender a confiar más en Dios y crecer más cerca a Él, debemos separarnos de las distracciones del mundo para que puedamos dar esa energía a Dios. En la Cuaresma, renunciamos algo, como chocolate, o hacemos algo, como ir a Misa cada día, para enfocar más en Dios. Cada vez en que tenemos la tentación de ir hacia la comodidad de estas placeres del mundo pero en vez vamos hacia Dios, crecemos en nuestra relación con Él. Más sobre la Cuaresma: Usted sabe que ayunamos de la carne los viernes de la Cuaresma, pero sabe que, para la gente años, en Miércoles de Ceniza y Viernes Santo, también tenemos un ayuno más general? Significa que en esos dos días comemos una comida completa sin carne y dos comidas pequeñas sin carne si son necesarios (que, cuando son combinadas, son más pequeñas que una comida completa), sin meriendas.
