Document A Melilla Melilla, un mundo por ver Sol, Mar y Deporte A B Existe una ciudad que reúne todo el misterio de África y la historia de España: Melilla. Una pequeña gran ciudad en el norte de África, bañada por el mar Mediterráneo, en la que los viajeros pueden pasar unas vacaciones llenas de exotismo, de variedad cultural y de actividades al aire libre. En Melilla conviven cristianos, musulmanes, hebreos e hindúes manteniendo sus distintas identidades culturales. La gastronomía de Melilla es excelente debido a la diversidad de su gente y a la riqueza de la cocina mediterránea. También es un lugar fantástico para las compras por su variedad y por los precios que son mucho más bajos que en la península porque muchos productos están libres de impuestos. La mayoría de las tiendas en la zona comercial son de musulmanes, hebreos e hindúes. En ellas los viajeros pueden comprar joyas de plata y oro, artesanías en cuero, cerámica, zapatos y hasta ropa de marca C Melilla es una ciudad alegre, viva y llena de diversión para todos los gustos de día y de noche y hay una variedad de restaurantes, bares y discotecas con diferentes tipos de música. 15 D Melilla es además un fantástico puerto para los amantes de la pesca submarina. La costa africana del Mediterráneo es uno de los lugares más bonitos para practicar este deporte, y existen muchas más especies de peces que en la costa europea. Para los que les gusta el baño tranquilo o las actividades de playa, Melilla cuenta con dos kilómetros de playas de arena muy fina, bañada por las seguras aguas del Mediterráneo. 20 CONTINUED

7 SPANISH SYLLABUS A LANG0S01 Page 6 Document B Las Esmeraldas A B C D E F G H Colombia es un país muy rico en productos naturales. El petróleo y el oro son los principales pero también son importantes las esmeraldas. Estas piedras preciosas ocupan el quinto lugar entre las exportaciones del país y han creado más de cien mil empleos directos. El sesenta por ciento de las esmeraldas que se comercian en el mundo vienen de las minas colombianas de Muzo, Coscuez y Chivor que se encuentran en Boyacá. El rectángulo de las esmeraldas, un área de 250 kilómetros de largo por 50 de ancho tiene una abundante cantidad de agua que es necesaria para la extracción de estas gemas. El trabajo en las minas es muy pesado y los mineros ganan sólo unos $600 al mes pero aún así miles de personas todavía llegan a estas tierras con la idea de encontrar la gema que los va a convertir en millonarios. Muchas veces el trabajo se hace manualmente para no echar a perder materiales valiosos. Se usa maquinaria para remover la vegetación, la capa del suelo, quitar los desperdicios y excavar túneles. A veces se usan explosivos pero esto puede causar la fractura de cristales grandes. En Bogotá se ha creado un centro dedicado a la esmeralda que pretende concentrar toda la oferta y adquirir el prestigio mundial necesario. El valor de la reina de las piedras verdes se determina por su color (el verde oscuro es el favorito), tamaño, pureza y tallado. Las exportaciones de esmeraldas tienen como destino los mercados de Estados Unidos, Suiza, Japón, Bélgica, España y Hong Kong. Colombia, con un noventa por ciento de la producción mundial, es el primer proveedor de esmeraldas en el mundo. Julio Cortés, dueño de Gems International (importadora de esmeraldas colombianas), dice que ahora la producción es menor por la violencia que existe en el país y que muchos no quieren negociar en Colombia y esto no es bueno para la economía de la nación. Los geólogos estiman que se ha explotado menos del dos por ciento de las más de cien mil hectáreas donde potencialmente puede haber oro verde TURN OVER
