7 ENGLISH LITERATURE- 12 TH GRADE Paper 5 William Shakespeare For the exam, students must have a thorough understanding of the entire play, Othello. Themes and ideas to consider: Shakespeare s presentation of race in the opening act of the play and how it develops throughout The portrayal of Iago as an artist of evil Othello s introduction to the audience The presentation of female characters and the significance of Desdemona and Emilia Othello and Desdemona s relationship in Act I The relationship between Othello and Iago The development of Othello s jealousy in the play The death of Desdemona and Othello Students will be given a passage taken from the play and they are expected to answer questions set on this. For each response, students must use the PEEE structure to show a clear understanding of the passage.
