by Philip Rush Build Background Read the title to children and talk with them about what the children are doing in the cover photo. Ask them what they think they will learn about school in this book. Then ask: Qué actividades escolares les gustan más? Por qué les gustan esas actividades? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Explain important text features such as the repetition of the phrase gusta, that tells what the children like to do in school. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that in this book, on every page, the children tell what they like to do at school. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Practice early reading behaviors such as pointing under each word and distinguishing between print and pictures. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Have children listen for words that begin with the same sound. Have children raise their hands if the words begin with the same sound and keep their hands in their laps if the beginning sound is different. Say pairs of words, emphasizing the beginning consonant sound, for example: gusta, gato; gusta, punta; leer, lupa; leer, comer; jugar, cantar; jugar, jirafa; cantar, carta; cantar, pintar. ABC Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Have children choose letters and put them in ABC order. Tracing Letters Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Have children choose a letter, say the name, and trace the letter. 3
Writing About Reading Vocabulary Practice Read the directions and have children complete the Vocabulario questions on Hoja reproducible 2.1. Responding Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 7. Building Vocabulary School Activities Build on the school activities in. Have children look at the photo on page 2 and talk about what the children are doing. Suggested language: Hablemos de las distintas actividades que nos gusta hacer en la escuela. As children suggested different activities, write their words and sentences on the board or on a large strip of paper. Begin the list with the words: gusta. (Possible suggestions: escribir, bailar, brincar, jugar a la pelota, correr, hablar, dibujar.) After children have suggested the activities, read the list together. Point to each word as you read. gusta hacer muchas cosas en la escuela! Writing Prompt Read aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their responses, using the writing prompt on page 6. Draw a picture that shows your favorite thing to do at school. Write about why it is your favorite. 4
