1 LESSON 2 TEACHER S GUIDE by Carrie Waters Fountas-Pinnell Level E Fiction Selection Summary The children help Sr. Caballo pass out and collect materials in their classroom. Finally, Elefante helps them all have fun by turning his trunk into a slide. Number of Words: 76 Characteristics of the Text Genre Fiction Text Structure Content Themes and Ideas Language and Literary Features Sentence Complexity Vocabulary Words Illustrations Book and Print Features Third-person narrative Simple narrative with several similar episodes Classroom activities Fantasy animals acting like children helping their teacher Children and teachers have jobs to do in a classroom. There are different ways of helping. People have different skills. Simple, split dialogue assigned to speaker More complex repeating sentence patterns. ( Tú puedes ayudar con ) Simple elements of fantasy: talking animals Some longer sentences more than six words Simple sentences Names of familiar classroom objects supported by pictures (libros, papel, lápices, crayones, bloques). Some multisyllabic words (crayones, lápices, elefante) Abbreviation: Sr. Common and proper nouns (Sr. Caballo; Elefante) Lively drawings support and extend the text. Nine pages of text with illustrations on each page Some sentences turn a line Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Heinemann, Portsmouth, N.H. 2 by Carrie Waters Build Background Read the title to children and talk with them about what the horse and raccoon are doing in the cover illustration. Explain that the title character, Sr. Caballo, is a teacher. Ask children what they will learn about helping a teacher in a classroom. Then ask: Cómo ayudan a sus maestros? Creen que es importante ayudar? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Explain important text features such as words that are spoken by the story characters. Point out the repetition of sentences and phrases. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that in this story the animals help their teacher, Sr. Caballo, do certain jobs in the classroom. In this book the characters are animals who talk and act just like people. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Aquí está el Sr. Caballo detrás de su escritorio. Qué está llevando? El Sr. Caballo dice: Todos me pueden ayudar. Ahora, digan Caballo. Qué letra esperan ver primero en Caballo? Pueden ver que la palabra Caballo empieza con C mayúscula porque es un nombre. Pongan su dedo debajo de la palabra Caballo y díganla. Point out that the word Sr. is an abbreviation for señor. Page 3: Remind children to use the information in the pictures to help them read. Vayan a la página 3. El Sr. Caballo dice: Tú me puedes ayudar con estos libros. Cómo creen que se siente el mono por ayudar al Sr. Caballo? Page 6: Quién está en el dibujo de esta página? El Sr. Caballo le dice al canguro: Tú puedes recoger los crayones. Qué está haciendo el canguro? Por qué creen que es importante recoger los crayones? Page 8: Vayan a la página 8. Elefante dice: Me gusta ayudar. Elefante empieza con E mayúscula, porque ese es su nombre. Encuentren la palabra Elefante. Qué creen que hará Elefante para ayudar? Ahora, vuevan al comienzo para descubrir qué hacen los distintos animales para ayudar al Sr. Caballo. Learn More Words caballo elefante 2
3 Read As the children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem-solving ability. Respond to the Text Personal Response Ask children to share their personal responses to the story. Begin by asking what they liked best about the story, or what they found interesting. Suggested language: Cómo creen que se sintieron los animales por ayudar al Sr. Caballo? Cómo creen que se sintió Elefante por ayudar a todos en la clase? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Some animals pass out books, paper, and pencils. Some animals pick up crayons and blocks. Elefante helps everyone have fun. It s important to help your teacher pass out and pick up supplies. Children should work together in their classroom. Everyone has something they are good at. The pictures show what is happening in the story. The words sound the way teachers and students talk. It s funny to read how Elefante helps everyone have fun Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Heinemann, Portsmouth, N.H. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Practice early reading behaviors such as understanding the concepts of a sentence as a group of words with ending punctuation. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables in words from the book: ayudar, caballo, lápices, elefante, recoger, crayones, bloques. Have them clap on each syllable: a-yu-dar; ca-ba-llo; lá-pi-ces; e-le-fan-te; re-co-ger; cra-yo-nes; blo-ques. Blend the Sounds Say words sound by sound and ask children to say the words. Begin with /p/ /u/ /e/ /d/ /e/ /s/. What is the word? (puedes). Continue with these words: /a/ /y/ /u/ /d/ /a/ /r/ (ayudar); /b/ /l/ /o/ /k/ /e/ /s/ (bloques); /r/ /e/ /k/ /o/ /g/ /e/ /r/ (recoger). 3
4 Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 2.4 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension on Skill Understanding Characters Tell children that characters are the people or animals who do and say things in the story. Reading carefully and looking at the pictures help readers understand story characters. Model understanding characters: Think Aloud Cómo puedo entender a los personajes de este cuento? Leeré las palabras y miraré los dibujos. Leo que los distintos animales están ayudando al Sr. Caballo en clase. Algunos ayudan con algunas cosas, otros, con otras. Elefante ayuda a todos a divertirse. Ahora, entiendo a los personajes. Todos están ayudando al Sr. Caballo de distintas maneras. Practice the Skill Have children think of another story they have read. Guide them in understanding the characters in the book. Writing Prompt Read aloud the following prompt. Have children write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6. How do you think everyone felt about Elefante? Write about how you can tell. 4
