Ask questions such as the following: Cuál es su animal favorito? Dónde vive? Cómo es? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Pages 2 3: Explain that this book gives facts about different kinds of animals. Suggested language: Vayan a las páginas 2 y 3. Qué ven en las fotografías de la página 3? Words to Know Have children turn to the Palabras que quiero saber at the back of the book. Read each word aloud and then together. Explain any unknown words. 3 Read As children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem solving ability. Respond to the Text Personal Response Ask children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Remind children that every sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark. Phonemic Awareness/Phonics Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Plurals of Nouns Say the following nouns and have children say their plurals: oso, ratón, pájaro, ballena, elefante, pez. Then, have them mention other animals they know and write their answers on the board. Have volunteers say the plural of each noun. Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables in words from the book: plumas, trompa, agua, selva, ballenas, elefantes. 3 Lesson 15:

4 Writing About Reading Vocabulary Practice Read the directions and have children complete the Vocabulario questions on Hoja reproducible Responding Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 11. Building Vocabulary Describing Words Build on the adjectives in. Suggested language: Pensemos en distintas palabras para describir animales. El oso polar tiene pelaje blanco y garras afiladas. La palabra blanco describe el pelaje del oso y la palabra afilada describe sus garras. Pensemos en otras maneras de describir al oso. As children suggest adjectives, write their words and sentences on the board or on a long strip of paper. Begin the list with the sentence frame El oso tiene y. Continue the list with other animals in the book. (Possible suggestions: patas grandes, orejas redondas, nariz negra, ojos pequeños.)
