SUMMARY Implementation of a public system of electric bicycles in the city of Madrid Author: ISMAEL NUNEZ OLIVE Director: JUAN DE NORVERTO Summary This project aims to design a public system of electric bicycles in the city of Madrid. This design consists of three different and complementary phases: Study of the technical feasibility of the system. We will study the most important elements of the system, from a technical point of view: electric bicycles, loan points and anchors (along with its electrical compatibility). System design. The entire organization of the system will be designed: location of the points of loan, the system (rates and operational), the amplitude of the system (number of bicycles and anchors) and estimate the amounts of potential users. Study of economic viability. It will analyze the feasibility of the project under different scenarios to 10 years and consider various solutions to enhance that viability. Study of the technical feasibility of the system It is the first part of the project, a definition of the system would be introduced that consists of a public service of rental bikes which has a network of loan positions or stations at which the user can remove the bike and return it once used.
SUMMARY At the same time these systems have secondary benefits are presented as a solution to various problems of big cities, such as traffic, energy consumption and the environment. Like any system, there are weaknesses and problems that would result in the failure of the system such as vandalism, high costs or collapse of the busiest stations. After a study, the main products are introduced: The electric bicycle chosen between two options: a conversion kit or a conventional electric bicycle. The final decision is based on the advantages and disadvantages of each model would. The final bicycle is the TUCANO Style STD. The docking stations chosen for the system are developed by ITCL. The electromagnetic compatibility of anchors allows batteries to charge electric bikes without damaging them and increasing their life durability. The media points (which allow the user to interact with the system) are designed to address the problems of vandalism and are comfortable to wear. However, after studying the economic viability of the security system more profitable, the final design includes a metal enclosure to protect bicycles from theft. One of the methods of financing this system is through advertising on the bikes and stations. You can find in the memory, the furniture chosen for advertising accompanying each of the stations and allowing the exhibition of advertising. System Design For a proper operation of the service, it is necessary to define the most important system variabilities: Location of the docking stations. After assessing whether the implementation of the system is viable in the city of Madrid while considering the most important factors that would prevent the infeasibility of the project (distances, physical barriers, environmental barriers and accidents of bicycles in the city), the final defined area of the project is established, along with the location of the docking stations. These locations meet some standards that will enable project success.
SUMMARY The amplitude of the system has been determined depending on the number of users that can use the system. These amounts have been confirmed using data from other systems implemented in other cities (Barcelona, Paris, etc.) And its evolution since its introduction. The rated service requirements allow the operation of the system. We present how all the processes of collection and return of the bicycle, the rates, the infrastructure used, vehicle for logistics and maintenance (using an electric van) and studies performed to ensure the quality of the system. Study of economic viability In order to analyze the economic viability of this project, all the investment costs, annual costs and benefits have been evaluated. The study was conducted under two financing scenarios: by own funds or using a bank loan of 100% of the initial investment to 10 years. In both cases, there have been several hypotheses to assess all costs (depreciation, rates of vandalism, etc.). Therefore the necessary calculations have been done to obtain the different cash flows. Resulting on an unreliable viability, some possible solutions have been studied. These solutions could change the initial design of the project: changing the bike, changing the user fees or reducing the infrastructure. There are other solutions but less significant. Below is a table showing the returns obtained for both types of financing: TIR Description Own funds Bank Loan Initial System 4% 5% Change the bike 11% 34% Change user fees 11% 20% Reduce infrastructure 3% 1% Note that the most profitable options for the system are reducing the cost of bicycles or increasing user fees. Both have no very high returns and are subject to a higher overall risk and investment. The total investment for 10 years amounts to 24,500,000.
