Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notes from the Pastor The Fourth Sunday of Lent was traditionally called Laetare Sunday and it was meant to provide a sort of break midway through our Lenten journey. The Latin word Laetare means rejoice, and although we are approaching the end of Lent and the terrible events of Jesus passion and death, we re also nearing the glorious moment of Easter when we celebrate Christ s Resurrection. In other words, in the life of Jesus, the apparent defeat of his crucifixion is crucially linked to his victory over sin and death when he rises from the dead. Since Christ is the center and model of every Christian life, as followers or disciples of Jesus, we are to see our own lives as we see his. There are in everyone s journey moments of joy and triumph, as well as moments of sorrow and loss. The challenge for us as Christians is to maintain the right perspective at every moment, never becoming overly discouraged, never losing our faith that God is guiding us toward the light. That s the message of this Sunday s Gospel of the man born blind. Here Jesus leads us bit by bit away from confusion toward understanding, away from darkness toward illumination. And this story demonstrates how enlightenment and wisdom can come to us when we put our faith in Christ Jesus and when we truly accept God s will. The major theme of St. John s Gospel from beginning to end is that Jesus is the light of the world. He has been sent by our heavenly Father into the darkness of this world in order to reveal God s kingdom and the glories of the life to come. At the same time, Jesus wants us to know that the earth is good, and that it provides for our needs. That s why Jesus sends the blind man, as the final part of his cure, to wash himself in the public bathing pool. He knows we need the baptism of water, the anointing with oil, the sharing of communion as visible signs of God s presence among us. St. Paul, in this Sunday s second reading, says to his new converts, the Ephesians, Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. Then, the light that Jesus Christ promises us -- the light of faith, the light of hope -- will more and more fill our souls and open our eyes and illuminate our path through this world toward the next. With Jesus as our Lord and our Good Shepherd, we can walk confidently and without fear through every difficulty. With Christ as our light, no darkness however deep will ever overcome us. Fr. P. Ulises
