Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notes from the Pastor On Wednesday of this week we ll be celebrating the memorial of St. Vincent de Paul. As all of our parishioners know, we host here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel a very active Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. We have a food pantry located on the parish grounds, and the Society has regular meetings in our Parish Center. In the front office, we daily receive calls from people requesting help with food, diapers and other needs. On the fifth Sundays of the month, we take up a second collection that is given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society to help with their apostolate of serving the poor. Participation in the Society can help us to live our faith in a more active way, putting into practice Jesus command to serve the needy. The group meets at 7:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month for no more than an hour, so the time commitment is not great. The good works of the Society flow from the spiritual life of its members. This active spirituality is the legacy of the Society s patron saint, Vincent de Paul (1581-1660). Vincent was born to a peasant family and he early in life discerned his priestly vocation. After ordination, he became a court chaplain to a wealthy family and he also served in a parish on the outskirts of Paris. During this time he came to know another future saint, Francis de Sales, whose famous book, Introduction to the Devout Life, had a profound influence on him. He soon felt compelled to do something to alleviate the sufferings of the poor and the sick whom he saw when he left the confines of the court. Vincent formed a group made up of women who named themselves Servants of the Poor. This initial group continued to grow and to branch out, developing into a now familiar religious order, the Daughters of Charity, who still minister to the needy today. Vincent hoped to form a parallel group for men, but this did not come about during his lifetime. It was a young French scholar, Antoine Frédéric Ozanam, who in 1833 established the first Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Ozanam was eager to promote Catholic life and identity among his fellow intellectuals who were becoming alienated from the Church. He was also deeply moved by the plight of the thousands of people who were living in poverty in Paris during the early stages of the Industrial Revolution. This newly-formed St. Vincent de Paul Society was a means by which dedicated laypeople could gather to pray and then mobilize to help the poor. Today, the Society has spread to more than a hundred countries. Here in the United States, it is widely known for the thrift stores it operates as well as for the numerous charitable activities it promotes. Individual parish conferences such as ours serve the needy by home visits, through prayer, and by various acts of mercy, all in the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, and of our Lord Jesus Christ himself. Fr. One Hour TODAY Rooted from the very beginning of Church tradition, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is the path for welcoming new inquirers into our community of believers. If you, or someone close to you, are considering becoming a member of the Catholic community here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel then please accept our invitation to join with us weekly on Sunday, following the 8:00 AM Mass in the Small Chapel on the James Street side of the Church. In a small group discussion format, we use this opportunity to discuss the readings of the week, unpacking layers of meaning, church tradition, and church teachings. Most importantly, we share the relevancy of these readings in our lives today. We also discuss questions regarding the Rite itself, look at what the Rite offers all of us during this wonderful spiritual journey, and how the Church uses the Rite for those seeking any or all of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist. We encourage those already members of the community to consider being a part of the RCIA team where by sharing your faith with inquirers you will receive the gift that comes by helping others grow in theirs. Finally, we ask you to consider being sponsors, walking with and supporting the inquirers as they grow. Please welcome them warmly into our community. For information, contact John Spotorno, RCIA coordinator, johnspotorno@gmail.com or call, cell (650) 303-6292 at home (650) 364-3704.
