Page 3 www.stritaparish.org December 3, 2017 FROM THE Advent is here! It PRIESTS DESK is a time of preparation for the Solemnities of Christmas. Human beings cannot live without hope, we think about the future and know that our actions shape it. To be without hope, to have something to live for is to surrender to despair. On earth we find all sorts of things to live for and we can hope for almost anything: for some measure of success or security, for our children, that they may be saved from our mistakes and sufferings and find a better life; we hope for a better world by throwing ourselves into politics or medicine or technology. Not all these forms of hope are selfish; indeed, they have given dignity and purpose to the lives of countless generations. The people of the Old Testament had the courage to hope for big things: that the desert would be turned into fertile land; that their scattered and divided people would eventually be gathered again; that the blind and the deaf would see and hear; that all the peoples of the earth would be united in the blessings of peace. Their hopes were not different from ours. However, we differ from them in two ways, first, the arrival of Jesus into history as a partial fulfilment of God s promises. Secondly, because Jesus has revealed to us that God is not afar off but is already in our midst. Advent is a time when, keeping in our minds and hearts the promises of Christ, we are led by the Spirit of the Father to look forward to Christ s Second coming at the end of time. (Ordo, The Spirit of Advent, Paulist Press).

Page 4 www.stritaparish.org December 3, 2017 The Immaculate Conception On Saturday, December 8 th, we will celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception. This feast day is very important to us catholic especially since her birth plays an essential role in our salvation. However, the meaning of the words Immaculate Conception is often times misunderstood. There are some who think it refers to Jesus' conception by the Virgin Mary. It does not. Instead, it refers to the special way in which the Virgin Mary herself was conceived. This conception was not virginal. (That is, she had a human father as well as a human mother.) But it was special and unique in another way.... The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains it this way: 490 To become the mother of the Savior, Mary was enriched by God with gifts appropriate to such a role. The angel Gabriel at the moment of the annunciation salutes her as full of grace. In fact, in order for Mary to be able to give the free assent of her faith to the announcement of her vocation, it was necessary that she be wholly borne by God's grace. 491 Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, full of grace through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Pope Pius IX proclaimed in 1854: The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin. Although we were not born IMMACULATE, by baptism we are immaculate because every stain of sin is erased from us. Our commitment must be to imitate 'Mary' in her love for God and to keep our soul clean of all sin. By giving Mary the grace of an immaculate conception, God showed us an image of our own destiny. He shows us to us humans it is possible by his grace to be immaculate as well. Page 6 www.stritaparish.org December 3, 2017 Your Parish Needs You and You Need Your Parish! By registering at a parish, you are declaring your desire to be part of a Catholic faith community. If you have recently moved to the area or if you are a long-time resident, please consider registering with the parish. This is especially important during a time of crisis so that the pastoral staff can attend to your spiritual needs and the needs of your family. Registration helps you stay connected with your parish and helps your parish stay connected with you.
