welcome u PARK DISTRICT NEWS u THE PARK BOARD ear Neighbors, KaBOOM! was the word this fall at the Round Lake Area Park District. Thanks to Discover Marketing Team, the Round Lake Community and hundreds of volunteers we were able to build a 5,000 square foot playground at the Sports Center located at 2004 Municipal Way Round Lake Beach. This playground will serve more than 300 area children throughout the year. Refer to page 84 for a listing of our community partners which helped this playground become a reality. Mission Statement The Mission of the Round Lake Area Park District is to promote healthy lifestyles through recreational programs, facilities and open spaces. Distinguished Agency The Round Lake Area Park District recently became the first ever state accredited agency with the Illinois Joint Distinguished Parks and Recreation Agency Program. This program utilizes a total of 157 standards with 372 evidences of compliances in six sections of agency operation and management. In the past, only 36 of 350 park districts, parks and recreational departments and forest preserves held that distinction. Speaking of thanks, thank you to all of you who supported our Corn Maze at Richardson s Adventure farm. Hope all of you have found yourselves out of the maze by now. Richardson s Adventure Farm and your Round Lake Area Park District received the Best Friend of Illinois Parks Award through the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD). It is always nice when the state recognizes how strong our community support is in making these partnerships possible. Meteorologists predict a cold snowy winter this year. Although I am not an expert, I can predict a few things here at the Round Lake Area Park District. For starters, we have indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball, indoor climbing wall, batting cages and adult leagues to keep everyone active this winter. And of course, it would not be winter if I did not mention our sled hill located off of Hart Road. See page 6 for more information. Whatever it is that you choose to do this winter please be safe and stay active. I encourage you to read our fitness tips on page 23 and take advantage of our Value Menu of Opportunities on page 1 where nothing is over $15. special events Winter Fun! Sledding is a Blast at Hart s Hill! If you re new to sledding, our smaller hill is perfect for practice. Once you ve got it mastered, take a thrilling ride on our large sled hill. Parents, Hart s Hill is unsupervised, so please stay with your kids. Weather and ice conditions permitting, Hart s Hill is lighted and open daily from 9:00 am - 9:00 pm. Please review Rules and Safety Conditions, below. Outdoor Ice Rinks The Round Lake Area Park District maintains two outdoor rinks for free public skating and hockey play. Safety Conditions are reviewed on a daily basis and indicated by the flag system, explained below. When open, ice rinks hours are from 9:00 am - 9:00 pm. Rink 1 - Whipple O. Parrot Park The Park District has designated the lake at this park as the only body of water authorized for recreational skating. When weather permits a sufficient thickness of ice to form on the lake, our Park District staff will conduct snow removal and safety inspections. When open, Wipple O. Parrot Park is open from 9:00 am - Dusk. Rink 2 - Hart s Hill When weather permits, Park District staff will construct an ice skating rink east of the Warming House on the sand volleyball courts. Like the sled hill, this rink is lighted. If safety conditions are met, it is open from 9:00 am - 9:00 pm. Rules at the Sled Hill & Ice Rinks: l Recreational use is only allowed when the Park District opens the hill and/or ice rinks. l Adequate snow cover and appropriate weather conditions are needed, as determined by the Park District. See Safety Conditions, below. l Hours are 9:00 am - 9:00 pm, when open. l Ice Rinks and Hart s Hill are unsupervised; use at your own risk. l Parents must supervise their children at sled hill. l Use only devices designed and approved at sled hill. l Toboggans, bike or trike sleds and metal rail sleds are not allowed. l No ramps or snow moguls may be fabricated. l Unsafe acts are prohibited. l No littering, fires or alcohol allowed. l Violators subject to penalty under District Ordinance. Hart s Woods Challenge Course is a unique experience offering the opportunity for your group to meet challenges head on and open the door to productivity and performance beyond expectations. performing arts THEATRE Upcoming Programs & Auditions The Round Lake Area Park District Community Theatre Wants You To Audition For: Ages 8 & up Auditions are on Feb. 13 & 15 at 6:30 at the Robert W. Rolek Community Center Auditions consist of cold readings from the script and singing music from the show which will be taught at the audition. Audition Workshop for The Rockin Tale of Snow White Tuesday, February 7 from 6:30-7:30 pm. at the Robert W. Rolek Community Center Designed with inexperienced thespians in mind, participants will be taught material that will be used in the audition, learn the audition process, along with tips and secrets on how to get the part. Anyone who wants to get a head start on the audition material is welcome, but special attention will be given to beginners. Note: Audition workshops are free and no registration is required. Participant may want to bring $2 to purchase a practice CD. This is not required, and may not be available at all workshops. CDs will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis, and will be available only while supplies last. Storyline: Oh no! Not another Snow White Play! But have no fear! This fresh and funny adaptation will make even the most jaded folks laugh out loud as it expands the Brothers Grimm tale with new characters who have always lived between the lines of the classic fairy tale. This version, using a fun frame story of a contemporary mom reading to her bickering children, is loaded with bright new faces and comedic twists. We meet a gaggle of forest animals, friendly Dwarf Villagers, a troupe of ladies in waiting with a penchant for limericks, the huntsman s squabbling conscience and even a rapping magic mirror. Musical styles of all genres fuse to create a rousing mixture of hip hop, rock and roll, doo wop and more! special recreation Special Recreation for People with Special Needs Live, Learn and Grow Special Recreation Service of Northern Lake County (SRSNLC) is an extension of four member park districts, Round Lake, Zion, Waukegan and Lindenhurst, that joined together to combine funds, facilities and resources to provide a wide range of recreation programs for individuals of all ages with special needs. Players try to get their Bocce balls closer to the Pallila (target ball) than their opponents. As a member of the SRSNLC Superstars Bocce Club, you train for eight weeks in preparation for the Special Olympics qualifying tournament in May. A gold medal at the Special Olympics qualifying tournament means you have the opportunity to go for gold at Summer Games at Illinois State University. Choose from soccer, basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, indoor climbing wall or our new indoor batting cage. Don t see your child s favorite activity listed? We ll do our best to accommodate their personal choice. Just supply the food and we ll supply the fun! This 50,000 square foot facility features an adult-sized, regulation indoor soccer field, a regulation basketball/volleyball court, a towering indoor climbing wall and a 9,000 square foot mezzanine for the party of a lifetime. The main level has 3 party rooms that can be rented separately or combined to accommodate a larger crowd. Each room has a sink, refrigerator, microwave and plenty of counter space. We can accommodate as many as 500 guests. Parties can be held anytime. Reservations are taken on a first come, first serve basis. Additional party time can be added at the time your reservation is taken. A non-refundable deposit of $70 is due at the time of registration. There is also a separate $50 damage deposit.
