1 ELETRIAL IRUITS OUTOME: Students learn the components of a simple electrical circuit. Simple materials combine to be used to complete what seems to be a simple task, to get the bulb to light. Students discover that the task is not always simple. There is a specific order to the connection of each part of the circuit in order to build a complete circuit. SUPPLIES: masking tape, dry cells, bulbs, foil PREPARE: wire (Ron Marson in his T.O.P.S. unit makes wire using masking tape. Stick tape to one side of a sheet of aluminum foil in side by side rows. Tear the foil/ tape in strips. Each team needs one piece of foil. Fold the tape/foil in half lengthwise with the tape inside. Then they have two strong pieces of "wire".) PROEDURE: Hand out a dry cell, wire, and bulb to each team of students. Instruct each team to use their materials to create a circuit that causes the light bulb to light. What must happen for the bulb to light? TEAHER BAKGROUND An electric circuit is a circle of electricity. The electricity must flow through a closed circuit to light the bulb: out the bottom of the battery, through the wire, through the side of the bulb, through the filament, out the bottom of the bulb, and into the top of the battery. In this closed circuit, the electricity travels from the battery, through wire to an appliance such as a bulb, and back to the battery. VOABULARY: ircuit A circular path in which electricity travels. onductor A material that allows an electric current to pass through it. Insulator A material that does not allow an electric current to pass through it.
