St. Benedict A MESSAGE FROM FR. RANDY GUILLEN Hello everyone! Here is a little bit about myself: I was born and raised in Santa Ana. I m a third generation Californian though I was ordained for the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ. It was here that my vocation was born, through the experience of the Neo-Catechumenal Way. Before entering the seminary I heard God's call and was sent to do missionary work in Arizona and Northern California. It was after this that I went to begin the seminary in March of 1990, after my ordination in 1996 I served in the Archdiocese of Newark, later in 1999 I was sent to work with Hispanics in Delaware, and after four years I returned to Newark. I also previously worked in the Diocese of Orange, at the Parish of St. Anne in Santa Ana, for 7 years. I m happy to return to serve in the Diocese of Orange. I m looking forward to serving the people of La Purisima!

7 NOTAS DE LITURGIA En mis notas de la semana pasada escribı que los Cristianos Cato licos celebramos la Misa, porque Jesu s nos lo dijo, y porque nos identi ica con la misio n que E l nos encomendo continuar. La Misa nos ayuda a participar en forma ritual en el sacri icio y oblacio n de Cristo por el mundo. Jesu s se ofrece a sı mismo para eliminar el pecado de Ada n y Eva y el nuestro. Nos reunimos en la Misa como hijos redimidos por Cristo para que E l sea el centro de nuestra vida, celebrando su mensaje y disfrutando de su divina presencia en el Cuerpo y la Sangre. Su Espıŕitu nos llena cada vez que celebramos, para poder ir al mundo a proclamar el mensaje de Su amor incondicional. "Los cristianos no huyen del mundo para participan en esta actividad salvadora del Cristo encarnado, al contrario, encuentran a Cristo en las actividades fundamentales del ser humano." (comiendo y bebiendo) John Baldovin, Entendiendo la Misa Por que molestarnos en asistir a Misa cada semana? Espero que empecemos a ver la importancia de reunirnos - cua l es el gusto?- el gusto es encontrarnos con Jesu s! Ya que la Misa es la esencia de nuestra actividad Cristiana Cato lica, es bien importante saber apreciarla. Han leı do el artıćulo de la "Etiqueta de la Santa Misa." Llegar a tiempo a Misa y quedarse hasta que termine es agradecer y respetar el sacri icio que Cristo hizo por nosotros. Adema s es un gesto de cortesıá con los dema s ieles que acuden a Misa a celebrar y disfrutar de nuestro Sen or en su Palabra y Sacramentos. Imagıńense a nuestro Sen or sentado en el Santuario esperando a que la Misa comience. Que harıámos si E l estuviera en persona en el altar - esperando que nos acerquemos? Lo bueno es que ÉL ESTÁ PRESENTE EN LA EUCARISTÍA y espera que nos acerquemos a E l, todos juntos, como un solo cuerpo. Jesu s nos invita a recibirlo en nuestro propio cuerpo. E l nos envıá a aquellos que no le conocen todavıá y nos pide que les hablemos de E l. Ese don nos exige lo mejor ya sea nuestro tiempo, nuestra actitud, el modo de vestirnos y nuestra atencio n. Podremos darle a nuestro Sen or una hora completa de nuestro tiempo para celebrar todos juntos? El jueves pasado celebramos la Independencia de nuestro paıś. Hay muchos lugares en el mundo donde no hay libertad religiosa. Desde los principios del cristianismo, las personas han sufrido persecuciones hasta el punto de ser martirizados por su fe en Cristo. Muchos hoy en dıá se reu nen a escondidas para celebrar la Misa. En este paıś que fue fundado con la libertad religiosa, tenemos que orar para que estos derechos sigan siendo respetados. La libertad religiosa es un privilegio que no debemos tratar con indiferencia, por lo tanto no debemos tratar la Misa con indiferencia. Ahora que entendemos la importancia de compartir nuestro pan, tomemos en cuenta el privilegio de poder reunirnos a celebrar la Misa. Vamos a proclamar con valentıá y con ianza ante el mundo, la accio n salvadora de Jesu s. Demos gracias a Dios por la libertad que tenemos de reunirnos a celebrar la Misa sin temor a ser perseguidos. Se comprometerıán a rezar esta oracio n especial, y a seguirle dando gracias a Dios cada vez que nos reunamos a recibir a Jesu s en la Eucaristıá? No olvidemos, Eucaristıá signi ica DAR GRACIAS. Todos los católicos estamos invitados a rezar... Oh Dios, nuestro Creador, Tu mano divina nos da el derecho de vivir, de ser libres, y buscar la felicidad. Tu nos llamas a ser tu pueblo y nos das el derecho y el don de adorarte a Ti, el u nico Dios verdadero, y a tu Hijo, Jesucristo. Por el poder del Espıŕitu Santo, nos llamas a vivir nuestra fe en medio del mundo, a llevar la luz y la verdad salvadora del Evangelio a todos los rincones de la sociedad. Te pedimos que nos bendigas en nuestro esfuerzo de defender la libertad religiosa. 9 LITURGY NOTES - THE MASS, PART 4 To sum up from last week, Catholic Christians celebrate the Mass because Jesus told us to, and because it is central to our identity and to the mission that Jesus entrusted us to continue for him. The mass is the means of participating in a ritual way, the self-giving, and self-offering of Christ for the life of the world. Jesus made the ultimate self-offering as a way of undoing the sins of Adam and Eve, and ours. We gather at Mass as those redeemed by Christ and make him the center of our lives, celebrate his message, and take in his presence in Body and Blood. His Spirit empowers us every time we celebrate, so that we can boldly go out into the world to proclaim the message of his unconditional love. "Christians don't participate in this saving activity of the Incarnate Christ by running away form the world, but on the contrary, by letting Christ encounter them in their most fundamental and intimately human activities." (eating and drinking) John Baldovin, Understanding the Mass. Why bother with going to mass each week? It is my hope that you begin to see the importance of why we gather - why bother- we bother with Jesus! Since it is the essential Catholic Christian activity, it is so very important that we not take the Mass for granted. Recently, you have seen bulletin blurbs about "Mass Etiquette." Arriving to mass on time and staying until the mass is over is the grateful and respectful way to respond to the gift of self- offering that Christ made for us. It is also courteous to the other worshippers who come to mass to celebrate and take in our Lord in Word and Sacrament. Imagine our Lord seated in the Sanctuary waiting for mass to begin. How would we respond if he was physically present at the altar - waiting for us to come to him? Well the great news is that HE IS PRESENT, in the Eucharist and he waits for us to come to him, together, as one. Jesus beckons us to receive him into our own bodies. Then he lovingly sends us out to others who may not know him yet, and asks us to tell them about him. That gift demands our very best in time, attitude, dress, and attention. Can we give our Lord one full hour of our time to celebrate together? This past Thursday we celebrated the Independence of our country. There are many places in the world where no religious freedom exits. Since the dawn of Christianity, people have been persecuted and even martyred for their faith in Christ. Many to this day meet in darkness and secrecy to celebrate the mass. In this country, a country founded on religious freedom, we have to pray for those rights to be upheld. Religious freedom is a privilege we must not take for granted, just like we must not take the mass for granted. Now that we have and understanding of the importance of our shared meal, let us take into consideration the gift that we have to celebrate. Let us boldly proclaim together to the world, with con idence, the saving action of Jesus. Let us thank God for the freedom we have to celebrate the mass without fear of persecution. Will you commit to praying this special prayer, and continue thanking God each time we gather to receive Jesus in the Eucharist? Eucharist means THANKSGIVING. All Catholics are invited to pray... O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcomefor the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after usthis great land will always be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
