1 CÓMO CONSTRUIR UNA MESA DE PICNIC CON HIELERA GUÍA DEL PROYECTO Qué puede hacer que una mesa de picnic hecha por ti sea todavía más increíble? Que le pongas una hielera con tapa de quita y pon. Estos planos son para una mesa de 6 pies de largo. El tipo de madera que escojas depende de ti, pero nosotros hemos usado madera tratada a presión para las patas, y madera común de secadero para el resto de la mesa. Tendrás que aplicar un acabado cuando hayas terminado el proyecto, lo que la hará más bella y duradera. Si no tienes la sierra correcta, pídele a un Asociado de Home Depot que te haga los cortes. Deja los puntales angulados que irán de la pata a la mesa para el final, así podrás ajustarlos al nivel vertical de las patas. Sigue el diagrama de corte: 4 patas a 65 grados con una longitud de 32 pulgadas. Después corta las cinco maderas de 12 pies a la mitad. De las 10 maderas resultantes, guárdate ocho para la parte superior y los asientos. Vista del tablero desde abajo, antes de ponerle las patas. Corta una de las maderas restantes de 6 pies a la mitad para los laterales de la hielera (en azul en el diagrama). Vista lateral del tablero antes de añadir las patas. PÁGINA 2 DE 6

3 CÓMO CONSTRUIR UNA MESA DE PICNIC CON HIELERA GUÍA DEL PROYECTO Corta la madera restante de 6 pies como se muestra en el diagrama para el centro del tablero superior: (2) 14 ½ para los extremos y la tapa removible a 42 pulgadas. En ésta, haz un agujero de ¾ a unas cinco pulgadas de uno de los lados. Vista superior del tablero antes de ponerle las patas. Tapa de la hielera para cuando no está en uso. De cada una de las maderas de 2x6 de 10 pies sacaremos: (1) soporte superior de 27 pulgadas (en rojo), (1) puntal de 27 pulgadas (en verde), y (1) soporte para el asiento de 58 pulgadas (en rojo). Necesitarás dos juegos de estos. Del 2x4 de 8 pies, corta dos puntales de 9 pulgadas para los asientos, dejando el resto para más tarde, cuando cortarás los dos puntales angulados de la mesa a la pata. Corta las maderas de 4 pies de 1x10 a 3 pies para formar el fondo de la hielera. Divide el trozo restante de 12 pulgadas en dos de 6x10 para los extremos. Usando la sierra para metales, corta el ángulo de hierro a la mitad para quedarte con dos trozos de 2 pies. PÁGINA 3 DE 6

4 CÓMO CONSTRUIR UNA MESA DE PICNIC CON HIELERA GUÍA DEL PROYECTO PASO 2 ARMA EL TABLERO SUPERIOR Pon las maderas bocabajo en el suelo, sin la tapa de la hielera, dejando un espacio de 3/8 de pulgada entre ellas y pon las abrazaderas. Mide y marca a 17 ½ pulgadas de cada una. Te servirán como marcas para el interior de los puntales. Coloca los puntales superiores en su lugar, y marca las líneas de los extremos y los lados con un lápiz. Aplica adhesivo de construcción dentro de las líneas, sin acercarte a los lados. Vuelve a colocar los puntales y clávalos con dos tornillos para deck de 2 ½ por cada tabla superior. Fíjate que las tablas del centro no llegan hasta el otro lado, así que el pegamento y los tornillos estarán más cerca del extremo. PASO 3 CREA LA HIELERA Usando los tornillos de 1 ¼, pega y asegura el fondo de la hielera a los laterales y a las dos piezas de 6x10 de los extremos, alineándolos con los lados y el fondo de la caja. Haz un agujero de ¾ de pulgada en el fondo, e inserta el codo de plástico. Sella todos los bordes interiores con el sellador. PASO 4 ASEGURA LA HIELERA Atornilla los dos hierros angulados de 2 pulgadas a los laterales de la hielera (en azul en el diagrama) con los tornillos para deck de 1 ¼. Pon un poco de pegamento en la parte superior de los laterales y atornilla el hierro a la parte de abajo del tablero, centrando la abertura de la hielera con el hueco en el tablero. Ponle un peso encima para que el pegamento selle mejor. PÁGINA 4 DE 6

5 CÓMO CONSTRUIR UNA MESA DE PICNIC CON HIELERA GUÍA DEL PROYECTO PASO 5 CONSTRUYE LOS PUNTALES PARA LAS PATAS Ahora, marca, aplica el adhesivo de construcción, y coloca los soportes superiores de las patas a unas 8 pulgadas del extremo de la mesa. Atornilla dos tornillos de 2 ½ pulgadas en ángulo a los extremos del soporte, y dale la vuelta a la mesa. Atornilla ahora el soporte a las tablas superiores, usando dos tornillos por tabla. Esto ayudará a que esté más firme. PASO 6 MONTA LAS PATAS Llegó el momento de armar las patas. Dale la vuelta a la mesa de nuevo, y agarra cada pata al soporte superior para que se alineen con la segunda y cuarta tabla de la parte superior. Haz dos agujeros de 3/8 de pulgada en las patas a través de los soportes como se muestra en el diagrama. Retira las abrazaderas, aplica pegamento donde las patas se encuentran con los soportes, y vuelve a fijarlas con las tuercas. Mide 10 pulgadas desde la parte inferior de las patas, y dibuja unas líneas paralelas en ellas. Esto marcará el lugar donde irá la parte inferior de los soportes inferiores de las patas. Con cuidado, centra y asegura cada soporte a las patas y haz dos agujeros de 3/8 en las patas a través de los soportes como se muestra en la imagen. Retira las abrazaderas, aplica el pegamento, y vuelve a fijarlos con las tuercas. PÁGINA 5 DE 6

6 CÓMO CONSTRUIR UNA MESA DE PICNIC CON HIELERA GUÍA DEL PROYECTO PASO 7 COLOCA LOS ASIENTOS Para colocar los asientos, centra las tablas del exterior del asiento a los soportes dejando que sobresalga el asiento una pulgada, Marca, pega, y atornilla estas tablas usando un par de tornillos de 2 ½ en cada lado. Después, coloca la tabla interior del asiento, dejando el mismo espacio de 3/8 entre ellas. Dale vuelta a la mesa e instala los soportes de los asientos con pegamento y tornillos. No dejes que estos tornillos salgan por el asiento. PASO 8 ASEGURA LOS ASIENTOS Mide y corta los puntales de la mesa a las patas. Deberán estar cortados a 45 grados, y fijados al centro del soporte de la pata, y también al fondo de la hielera con tornillos de 1 ¼. En cada esquina de los asientos, mide 2 ¾ pulgadas y haz una marca. Con una escuadra, dibuja una línea diagonal de 45 grados en cada una de las ocho esquinas exteriores de cada asiento. Con la sierra, corta las esquinas. PASO 9 LIJA Y TERMINA Finalmente, lija todos los bordes de la mesa, y aplícale el acabado que elijas para que sea resistente al clima. Después, coloca el tubo de plástico de ½ pulgada en el codo de debajo de la hielera, y déjalo que corra hasta un cubo, o a lo largo de la pata hasta el césped. Si quieres bloquear los extremos de la hielera para añadirle un drenaje, también puedes pensar en utilizarla como maceta. Sólo llénala de tierra y a plantar! PÁGINA 6 DE 6

7 HOW TO BUILD A PICNIC TABLE WITH BUILT-IN COOLER PROJECT GUIDE What can make a DIY picnic table even more delightful? A built-in tabletop cooler bin with a replaceable cover. The plans here are for a 6-foot-long table. The type of wood you choose is up to you, but we used pressure-treated lumber for the legs, and common kiln-dried lumber for the rest of the table. You ll need to apply a finish when you ve completed your project, which will add beauty as well as durability. 8 HOW TO BUILD A PICNIC TABLE WITH BUILT-IN COOLER PROJECT GUIDE STEP 1 CUT LIST Make most of your lumber cuts first. If you don t have the right saw, ask your local Home Depot associate to make the cuts for you. Save the two table-to-leg angled braces for the end as you can then measure for plumb vertical legs and adjust accordingly. Cut per the diagram: 4 legs at 65 degrees with length of 32 inches. Next, cut the 12-footers in half to give you 10 6-foot boards. Set eight of these aside to be used for top and seat boards. Cut one of the remaining 6-footers in half again for the two cooler sides (see blue parts of diagram). PAGE 2 OF 6

9 HOW TO BUILD A PICNIC TABLE WITH BUILT-IN COOLER PROJECT GUIDE Cut the last 6-foot board as shown in the diagram for the center top pieces: (2) 14 ½-inch ends and the removable cover at 42 inches. On this piece, drill a ¾-inch hole about 5 inches in from one end for a finger pull. Each 10-foot 2 x 6 will yield (1) 27-inch top support (see red parts of diagram), (1) 27-inch top brace (green), and (1) 58-inch seat support (red). You will need two sets of these. From the 8-foot 2 x 4, cut a pair of 9-inch center seat braces, leaving the rest for later when you will cut the two table-to-leg angled braces. Cut the 4-foot 1 x 10 down to 3 feet to form the bottom of the cooler. Divide the remaining 12-inch piece into two 6 x 10-inch end pieces. Using a hacksaw, cut the angle iron in half to yield a pair of 2-foot brackets. PAGE 3 OF 6

10 HOW TO BUILD A PICNIC TABLE WITH BUILT-IN COOLER PROJECT GUIDE STEP 2 BUILD THE TOP Lay out the top boards, bottom up, without the cooler cover. Shim a roughly 3/8-inch gap between them as you clamp them together. Measure out and draw lines 17 ½-inches from each end. These will serve as markers for the inside of the top braces. Set the two (green) top braces in place and mark the end and outside lines with a pencil. Apply construction adhesive within the lines of the top braces, but not near the gaps. Replace the braces and use 2 ½-inch deck screws (two per top board) to secure them. Note that the center top boards don t extend all the way across the brace, so the glue and screws need to be closer to the edge. STEP 3 CREATE THE COOLER Using 1 ¼-inch deck screws, glue and attach the 1 x 10 bottom to the cooler side boards, and the two 6 x 10-inch pieces to the ends, aligning them with the sides and bottom of the box, leaving the gap along the top. Drill a ¾-inch hole in the bottom of the trough, and force-fit the ¾ x ½-inch plastic 90-degree elbow into the hole. Then seal all interior edges with the caulk. STEP 4 SECURE THE COOLER Screw each angle iron to the top edges of the two (blue parts of the diagram) cooler sides with the 1 ¼-inch deck screws and washers. Lightly glue the side edges and screw the brackets to the underside of the tabletop, centered above the open center space. Adding a little weight to the boards will also help the glue bond against the underside of the tabletop. PAGE 4 OF 6

11 HOW TO BUILD A PICNIC TABLE WITH BUILT-IN COOLER PROJECT GUIDE STEP 5 BUILD THE BRACE FOR THE LEGS Next, mark, apply construction adhesive and place the top leg supports on edge 8 inches in from the table edge. Using two 2 ½-inch screws, drive one at each end of the board at an angle into the tabletop to temporarily hold the brace in place, and then flip the tabletop over. Using a pair of 2 ½-inch deck screws per top board, screw the leg support from above to draw the pieces securely up to the underside of the tabletop. When the glue has set, this will provide a strong brace for the legs. STEP 6 MOUNT THE LEGS Now it s time to mount the leg pieces. Flip the top over again and securely clamp each leg to the top support so that they line up with the second and fourth top boards and are flush to the underside of the top boards. Drill two 3/8-inch holes in the legs through the supports as shown in the diagram. Remove the clamps, apply glue where the legs meet the supports, and reattach them with the carriage bolts. Measure 10 inches from the leg bottoms and draw parallel lines across the legs. This marks the lower edge of the seat supports. Carefully center and securely clamp each seat support to the legs and drill two 3/8-inch holes in the legs through the supports as shown in the picture. Remove the clamps, apply glue where the legs meet the supports, and reattach them with the carriage bolts. PAGE 5 OF 6

12 HOW TO BUILD A PICNIC TABLE WITH BUILT-IN COOLER PROJECT GUIDE STEP 7 ATTACH THE SEATS To attach the seats, center the outer boards on their seat supports with a 1-inch overhang off the back edge. Mark, glue and screw these boards down using a pair of 2 ½-inch screws in each support. Next, set the inner seat boards in with the same 3/8-inch gap you used for the top board spacing. Flip the table over and install the seat braces from below using glue and screws. Do not let these screws protrude from the seat top. STEP 8 BRACE THE SEATS Measure and cut the leg-to-top braces. These should be cut on 45 degrees, attached to the center of the leg supports and also to the bottom of the cooler using 1 ¼-inch screws. On each corner of the seat boards, measure in 2 ¾ inches and place a mark. Using a speed square, draw a 45 degree diagonal line on all eight outside corners of both bench seats. Using the jigsaw, cut off the corners. STEP 9 SAND AND FINISH Finally, sand all edges of your new table and apply the finish of your choice to make it weatherproof. Then attach the ½-inch tubing to the plastic elbow under the cooler and run it to a bucket, or along a table leg and out to the grass. If you decide to block off the ends of the cooler to add a drain, you could also consider using the cooler trough as a planter. Just fill it with potting soil and add plants! PAGE 6 OF 6
