Members of the Confraternity join an endless stream of Christians who are devoted to Mary and her Son. Pope Leo XIII said in his encyclical on the Confraternity, "whenever a person fulfills his obligation of reciting the Rosary according to the rule of the Confraternity, he includes in his intentions all its members, and they in turn render him the same service many times over."

5 A Message from Fr. Roberto Catholic Underground The next Catholic Underground will take place at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Berkeley on Friday, April 29. Catholic Underground is a two part event for young adults in the Bay Area. The first part of the evening consists of Eucharistic Adoration, and the second part showcases different Catholic artists. During the next Catholic Underground, the featured artist will be Kevin Heider. Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, Kevin s unique and malleable indie -folk/rock sound is coupled with a lyrical form that explores from the heights to the depths what it means to be human. And he is self-taught on every instrument he plays. For more information, you can visit the Catholic Underground Bay Area website or check their Facebook for updates. Bishop s Appeal Bishop Barber and the Diocese of Oakland have asked Holy Rosary to contribute to the annual Bishop s Appeal campaign which supports the diocesan seminarians, retired diocesan priests, and the poorer parishes, schools and individuals in the Diocese. So far, 217 donors from Holy Rosary have promised $24, in pledges which is 42% of our goal of $59, Thanks to all of you who have given so far. If you have not yet pledged or given to the Bishop s Appeal, I ask you to do so. Thank you. Evangelization What It Means Through the years, many Catholics I have worked with including some here at Holy Rosary feel uncomfortable with the word evangelization. On the one hand it is understandable that some people feel this way because of people who have tried to evangelize us and made us feel uncomfortable or because of images like the one to the right. I don t think Jesus wants anyone to be this kind of judgmental and negative person; nor does he want us to make people feel ill at ease. But, Jesus did say: Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you (Matthew 28: 19-20). And, as I said last week in my bulletin message, the Catholic Church since Vatican II has used some form of the word evangelization repeatedly in its writings and teachings, especially the last three popes. In addition, the bishops of the United States and Latin America and our Dominican Order have challenged us to make evangelization a priority. So just how are we supposed to evangelize? Basically, it means sharing f2/53/30f253bed92bacbf9f3ab461fece66c9.jpg cape_bound/2198/img_0938_r1.jpg with others in a gentle and sincere way what God has done for us in our lives and what our relationship with Jesus and our Catholic faith mean to us. A very successful way of doing this is to invest and invite, i.e., to seek out purposely family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, fellow students or others who are unchurched those who don t go to church for whatever reason, and invest time in them. That doesn't mean that we treat them as projects. It means that we genuinely care about them, get to know what's happening in their lives, and, when the time is right, invite them to take an appropriate next step toward Jesus, toward God, toward faith. It can simply be offering to pray for them if they are struggling in some way, sharing with them how our faith has helped us, or inviting them to Mass or a prayer group or a small faith-sharing group or even to some social event at church. Whatever we do, it does not have to make us or them feel uncomfortable, but is rather a natural extension of our relationship with them and care for them. Most people who come back to church or to faith in God do so because someone personally invited them. So, as we continue to move toward our vision of Holy Rosary becoming a center of formation for discipleship and evangelization, I ask you to open your mind and heart to understand what evangelization is and what it is not. Evangelization is a very Catholic word and activity that we need to reclaim and live.

7 HOLY ROSARY YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY MINISTERIO JUVENIL DE HOLY ROSARY Pan De Vida Retreat 2016 Last weekend 130 of our first year confirmation candidates joined Immaculate Heart of Mary for the Pan de Vida Retreat. Pan de Vida is a Eucharist centered retreat lead by the Community of Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and the Poor Clare sisters. Over the weekend the teens learned a lot about the Faith; they heard great talks, worshipped and prayed together. Enjoy some photos. 9 Un Mensaje de Padre Roberto Apelación del Obispo Nuestro Obispo Barber y la Diócesis de Oakland han pedido a Holy Rosary a contribuir a la campaña de la Campaña Anual del Obispo, que apoya a los seminaristas diocesanos, a los sacerdotes diocesanos jubilados, y las parroquias, escuelas e individuos más pobres en la Diócesis. La Evangelización Lo Que Significa A través de los años, muchos católicos con los que he trabajado incluyendo algunos aquí en Holy Rosary se sienten incómodos con la palabra evangelización. Por un lado, es comprensible que algunas personas se sienten de esta manera debido a las personas que han tratado de evangelizarnos y nos hicieron sentir incómodos o por imágenes como la de la derecha. No creo que Jesús quiere que cualquiera sea esta clase de persona crítica y negativa; tampoco quiere que hagamos que la gente se sienta incómoda. Sin embargo, Jesús dijo: Id, pues, y haced discípulos a todas las naciones, bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo, y enseñándoles a guardar todo lo que os he mandado (Mateo 28, 19-20). Y, como dije la semana pasada en mi mensaje en el boletín, la Iglesia Católica desde el Concilio Vaticano II ha utilizado alguna forma de la palabra "evangelización" en varias ocasiones en sus escritos y enseñanzas, especialmente los últimos tres papas. Además, los obispos de los Estados Unidos y América Latina y la Orden Dominicana nos han desafiado a hacer una prioridad de la evangelización. La Evangelización es la misión de la Iglesia, no sólo de unos cuantos, sino la mía, la tuya, la nuestra. Básicamente, esto significa compartir con los demás de una manera suave y sincera lo que Dios ha hecho por nosotros en nuestras vidas y lo que nuestra relación con Jesús y nuestra fe católica significan para nosotros. Una manera muy exitosa de hacer esto es "invertir e invitar", es decir, a propósito buscar a familiares, amigos, vecinos, compañeros de trabajo o de la escuela, o a otras personas que no van a la iglesia por cualquier razón, e invertir tiempo en ellas. Eso no quiere decir que las tratemos como proyectos. Quiere decir que sinceramente nos preocupemos por ellas, nos informemos lo que está pasando en sus vidas, y, cuando sea el momento adecuado, las invitemos a tomar un paso apropiado hacia Jesús, hacia Dios, hacia la fe. Simplemente puedes ofrecerte a orar por ellas si tienen dificultades de alguna manera, compartir con ellas la forma en que nuestra fe nos ha ayudado, o invitarlas a Misa o a un grupo de oración o a una pequeña comunidad de fe, o incluso a algún evento social en la iglesia. Hagamos lo que hagamos, no tiene que ser algo que haga sentir incómodos ni a nosotros ni a ellas; es más bien una extensión natural de nuestra relación con ellas y nuestro cuidado por ellas. La mayoría de la gente que regresa a la iglesia o a la fe en Dios, lo hacen porque alguien les invitó personalmente. Así, a medida que sigamos avanzando hacia nuestra visión de Holy Rosary a que se convierta en un centro de formación para el discipulado y la evangelización, te pido que abras tu mente y corazón para entender lo que es la evangelización y lo que no lo es.
