2 From Your Delegate--Gene-- Hints for Your Group I went to Al-Anon's World Service Conference in Virginia Beach, April 14th thru 19th. At each conference, we have two agenda items where there is just a floor discussion - no action. This year, one of those items was on retention - both of newcomers and long term members. I'll let you do the "math" for your group. But, I think it is fairly obvious that most newcomers do not "stick," and that we have a noticeable loss of longer term members. A result is that Al-Anon is pretty static in terms of numbers. It would not take much of an improvement in retention for newcomers or long term members, to cause Al-Anon to grow very noticeably. So... here are some thoughts that came out of the WSC that you might consider for your group --!! One group gives newcomers several copies of the Forum, but tells them they are "loaners," so the newcomer has to come back the following week to return them, (and in the process learn more about Al-Anon.)!! Al-Anon has a six week newcomer program. Most groups, that I attend, have a "single" newcomer meeting; and the next week, they join the regular meeting. The problem with the single meeting is that a newcomer can leave thinking from a single meeting they know everything about what Al-Anon can do for them. The six week program does a better job of educating the newcomer by giving the newcomer more of a reason to keep coming back, (at least, for six times).!! At the end of meetings, most groups "chant," "keep coming back," or some extension of that. We have to "indoctrinate" people to keep coming back? The chants are not really Al-Anon, and they may sound weird or cultish to a newcomer. What about cutting out the chant and ending simply with the prayer or declaration?!! Speaking of the end of the meeting, many groups end with the iconic Christian prayer, the "Lord's Prayer," which is not Al-Anon CAL. When a person goes to a therapist for help in changing their lives, they do not go into that relationship expecting the therapist to pray with them at the end of each session. Similarly, newcomers do not come to Al-Anon expecting the Lord's Prayer at the end. They just want recovery. As we try to adapt to a more diverse society, we might want to look at changing the ending of our meetings. There are a number of non-sectarian prayers in our literature that could be used if we want a prayer at the end of the meeting instead of just the Al-Anon declaration.!! Socialization with other Al-Anons reinforces our recovery and also makes recovery fun. What about announcing at the end of the meeting that members will be adjourning for coffee at? What about having a "birthday cake" once a month for all those celebrating their Al-Anon anniversary that month?!! For the first time newcomer, have the experienced members in the newcomer's group write their name and phone number on the newcomer's packet. Well, I'll stop my list here. I'm sure each of you can come up with more ideas for improving the retention of new and old timers. Wouldn't it be wonderful if five years from now, the Group Records Secretary said, "You know, we have 15% more groups now than we had five years ago in 2013." 3 Desde Su Delegado--Gene--Consejos Para Tu Grupo Fui a la Conferencia de servicio de Al-Anon mundial en Virginia Beach, el 14 de Abril a través de 19. En cada conferencia, tenemos dos temas donde hay sólo una discusión de piso - ninguna acción. Este año, uno de esos artículos estaba en retención - tanto de los recién llegados y a largo plazo. Voy a dejar hacer la "matemática" para su grupo. Pero, creo que es bastante obvio que la mayoría de los recién llegados no "palillo", y que tenemos una notable pérdida de miembros de más largo plazo. El resultado es que Al-Anon es bastante estático en términos de números. No tomaría mucho de una mejora en la retención para los recién llegados o miembros de largo plazo, a causa de Al-Anon a crecer muy notablemente. So... aquí están algunas ideas que salieron de la WSC que puede considerar para su grupo-- Un grupo da a los recién llegados varias copias del foro, pero les dice que son "solitarios", por lo tanto el recién llegado debe volver la semana siguiente a devolverlos, (y en el proceso de aprender más sobre Al-Anon). Al final de las reuniones, mayoría de los grupos "canto", "volver", o alguna extensiónde eso. Tenemos que "adoctrinar" a la gente para volver? Los cantos no son realmente Al-Anon, y pueden sonar extraño o culto a un recién llegado. Qué pasa con cortando el canto y terminando con la oración o la declaración? Habla del final de la reunión, muchos finales de grupos con el icónica oración cristiana, el "Padre nuestro," que no es Al-Anon CAL. Cuando una persona va a un terapeuta para ayuda en el cambio de sus vidas, no entran en esa relación esperando el terapeuta a orar con ellos al final de cada sesión. Del mismo modo, los recién llegados no vienen Al-Anon esperando el Padrenuestro al final. Sólo quieren la recuperación. Tratamos de adaptarnos a una sociedad más diversa, querríamos ver cambiar el final de nuestras reuniones. Hay una serie de oraciones no sectaria en nuestra literatura que podrían utilizarse si queremos una oración al final de la reunión en lugar de sólo la declaración Al-Anon. Socialización con otros usuarios de anónimos Al refuerza nuestra recuperación y también la burla de la recuperación. Qué anuncia el final de la reunión que los miembros se levantar para café en? Además de tener un "pastel" una vez al mes para todos los celebrando su aniversario de Al-Anon ese mes? Para el recién llegado la vez primero, tienen los miembros experimentados en grupo del recién llegado escriba su nombre y número de teléfono en el paquete del recién llegado. 4 From Our Chairperson--Vinnie This past weekend, I was invited to speak at a round-up; and it was a blast. How nice to have a little fun amid the busy schedule and obligations of my life. I got to participate, rather than facilitate, plan agendas, or make phone calls. My husband escorted me there, and my host was delightful. She and I hit it off immediately. I made new friends while catching up with a few old ones. What a gift that no matter where I go in the program, Al-Anon is there to greet me with love. On the way home, I realized that I think I ve been taking myself a little too serious lately. This is kind of a shocking revelation to me, since I m the one usually looking to have a good time. Typically, I m all about the fun - I m here for the party. Living with alcoholism took away the idea of enjoying life. There wasn t much to enjoy other than just hoping and looking forward to the end of the day. Lately, I have become aware of that old character defect from long ago--the infamous-- all or nothing perception. The one that leaves me with no chance of compromise and balance is nothing more than a word in a dictionary. This idea that I have to get everything finished right now or yesterday overwhelms me. The level of enjoyment, at taking some time for fun, floods me with feelings of guilt that I should be taking time to finish tasks. These are old behaviors that I have stepped into yet again, and I become weary. This weekend helped me to better define yet another word in my vocabulary of recovery. To create a balanced life, I must exercise some self-discipline. That way I can pay attention to my feelings without being tyrannized by them. page 227, Courage to Change I am reminded again, that everything in moderation, even the serious stuff. I can only do so much in a day. It goes back to time management, organization and of course, recovery--staying in the moment. The program is where I learn how to function in the world and within me. When my life begins to get crazy because I can t seem to catch up with myself, I turn again to the Steps that provide me relief and give me a new approach on life. It is the Steps that help me redefine my language to clarify those situations. What a miracle that I have a method at my fingertips to use over and over as many times as I want or need, solving any problems I have. Today I will try not to condemn parts of myself while accepting other parts. I am a composite, and I love myself best when I embrace all that I am. page 54, Courage to Change What are you doing for fun and enjoyment today in your life? I, for one, can never have too much fun! 5 De Su Presidente--Vinnie Este fin de semana pasado, fui invitado a hablar en un round-up; y fue una explosión. Que lindo tener un poco de diversión en medio de la apretada agenda y las obligaciones de mi vida. Llegué a participar, en lugar de facilitar, plan agendas o hacer llamadas telefónicas. Mi esposo me escoltó allí, y mi anfitrión fue encantador. Ella y yo golpeó inmediatamente. Hice nuevos amigos mientras que ponerse al día con unos viejos. Un regalo que no importa a dónde voy en el programa, Al- Anon está allí para recibirme con amor. 6 ASK FLAC Your questions answered out of CAL by the Fellowship Literature Action Committee Q. Could someone share what they see as their experience, strength, and hope in the program? A. My Experience, Strength, and Hope in Al-Anon Sharing When I came to Al-Anon, I heard no situation is hopeless. This gave me the strength I needed to return and practice Listen and learn. I'm very grateful for so much, since I've been in Al-Anon. The tools Al-Anon gave me are incredible. Sometimes, I feared for my life and so did our children. In our house, violence damaged everyone of us, including my husband. Years later, I found out he was in a violent dry drunk. After twenty-five years, I realized that I was living in a survival mode. This was an experience from the past that I will never forget. I believe my Higher Power, (whom I call God), knew I would tire of the survival mode and eventually seek help. Undoubtedly, without my Higher Power allowing me to reach my bottom, I would have continued this damaging lifestyle for our children and myself. Al-Anon helped me to make changes within myself. As I began to recover, I eventually left the marriage, and my children were finally safe. From my past experiences, I have learned to respond differently to situations, instead of reacting in a way that creates further problems. My children and my siblings and were adversely affected too. Al-Anon gave me the hope I needed as I received the great support from the group and the tools of the program. Working the Steps brought healing results. Now, I know how to live sanely. I learned how to detach, make phone calls, and talk to a sponsor who is trustworthy and dependable. The painful lifestyle of my past became a valuable tool that brought me closer to God. God has always brought good out of my suffering. When I thank Him, I am telling Him I trust Him. He will always help me-- again and again. God and Al-Anon continues to give me experience, strength and hope. I need to only live One day at a time and to Let go and let God. Do you or someone in your group have a question about Al-Anon? Officers and Coordinator Corner Page 1 From Your NIAFG Institutions Coordinator--Dan For those who have joined the list of volunteers willing to speak at Institutions meetings, THANKS!!!!! What do your efforts do? Please allow me to share. 1) The Hinsdale Alateen group has expressed an interest in having some of their members speak at Institutions meetings in the western suburbs, and possibly elsewhere. So we re setting them up to speak at a Naperville treatment center and see how that goes. Thanks to their sponsor, Kevin, for reading AIMS and encouraging the kids to take the plunge. More on this next month. 2) A team from District 5 has been working long and hard to set up an Institutions Meeting at Hines VA Hospital just west of Chicago. Lots of paperwork, (it is a Federal facility), and details; but the facility coordinator and the Al-Anon volunteers were not deterred. The meeting, possibly meetings, should go live later this year. 3) Your story here. Please let me know what your group or District is doing to support Institutions in the Area. (that are trying to catch up on your rest since Midlake 2013) Yes, we have survived another Midlake Experience. Here's hoping that all the Alateens and their sponsors came away reenergized in their Al-Anon/Alateen programs. Thank you to all those sponsors and Alateens who served on the Midlake 2013 Committee. A special thank you to Dan M. and Linda M.-- it was through your perseverance and expertise that we were able to pull off a wonderful weekend for all that attended. Thank you to all the Al-Anon groups who contributed money for the Alateens in your District. Thanks to Wendy S. for all the scholarship money you were able to provide by being the Treasurer for Midlake. Hope to see you all next year to help Wisconsin in Rest up, we have Conventions and Conferences to get ready for by September. The first event will be September 14, It is the race that will be held in Palatine to raise Illinois Al-Anon Convention in Itasca. As of May 8, 2013, our 170 Plus Alateen sponsors will have been re-certified, along with quite a few new sponsors and AMIAS. Thank you to Gene W. for the Power Point. It does make the workshop less tedious, and leaves time for discussion. Thank you to Sandy W. for making the Online Re-certification Workshop available for re-certifying sponsors. That helped keep the inperson workshops to a manageable size. Thank you all for giving up your precious time on Saturday and Wednesday to attend an Alateen Sponsor Workshop. To the sponsors that were at the Elgin and Woodridge Workshops, I apologize for being late. Between mechanical, (my GPS), and human error, I was detained. Officers and Coordinator Corner Page 5 From Your NIAFG Media Library Coordinator--Blake In the Al-Anon program, Iʼve learned to keep my focus in the present. Writing these articles for the AIMS can be a challenge for me. I have to write and submit the articles to the editor a month in advance to meet our publishing deadlines. I often have to think ahead and try to come up with something that will be timely and relevant by the time it gets in the readersʼ hands. So, I place my faith in my Higher Powerʼs hands that what I write, today, will make some sense when it is read a month from now. Currently, our May Assembly is coming up next week. I have to update the Media Library Catalog with new titles and get the website updated. Two weeks ago, my computer crashed. In trying to fix the problem myself, I made it worse, and lost everything I had on the computer. Typical Al-Anon personality of trying to force solutions to a problem I have no control over. Had I stopped and asked for help sooner, I would have saved my data and not be in the situation Iʼm in now. I did finally surrender to the idea that Iʼm powerless over this problem, and asked for help from someone who knows more about computers than I do. The IT person where I work has been helping me get my computer working again. He had to completely wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall the operating software. Next, I have to reinstall all the software programs and hardware I use. The good news, in this story, is that I get to update newer versions of the programs I use. I was also able to rid my computer of a lot of junk that I donʼt use but was slowing it down. Some of the software program versions where more than ten years old. It will be like working on a new computer. Iʼve got some work to do in the next week. But, whatever the results, I have faith that I will be where my Higher Power wants me.
