Mr. Ernest Ciccarelli, Deacon From the Pastor s Laptop Today s readings speak of three men who wanted to live the faith, but they were discouraged and felt like quitting because of their own weaknesses and failures. Isaiah said Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips Then in a vision, an angel purified him by touching his mouth with a burning ember from the altar. Encouraged, Isaiah said: Here I am, send me! Saint Peter felt discouraged because he had fished all night and had caught nothing. He said to Jesus: Depart from me, for I am a sinful man. However, Jesus reassured him: Do not be afraid, from now on you will be catching men. St. Paul said I am not fit to be called an Apostle. But the Lord said My grace is sufficient for you. Later Paul reflected: I have toiled harder than all of them; not I, however, but the grace of God that is in me. We need the purifying fire of God s mercy and grace to re-energize us. This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday (Mass times on page 2), when we recommit ourselves to prayer and penance so that we Live the Faith. However, it must begin with prayer. We must always pray gratefully first, so that we will then have the grace and the wisdom to serve responsibly and give generously! Lenten Bible Study for the Year of Faith Starts this Tuesday, February 12 at 7pm in Fr O Hare Hall We will use Fr. Mitch Pacwa s Year of Faith Bible Study as our guide. The bible study is six sessions/weeks and each night will have a talk, small group discussion, and Adoration. Sign up on the plaza Today! 3 Religious Education Vatican II Documents Dei Verbum (Part 1) By Gary Nelson Continuing on with our Documents of Vatican II series during this Year of Faith In the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a debate was raging over the application of scientific methodology to the study of the Bible. Evolving from this was the historical-critical method of scripture analysis. By questioning such truths as the divine inspiration and inerrancy of the Bible, this method had led to skepticism and an erosion of faith among many Christians. On November 18, 1965, the Second Vatican Council adopted and published the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum (Word of God). This document was published to provide a statement that would strongly enforce the teachings of Vatican I and the Council of Trent and set out the true doctrine on divine revelation. Dei Verbum is organized into six chapters, the first of which discusses divine revelation itself. Fundamental to Christian belief is the fact that God chose to reveal Himself to mankind. His works in the history of salvation show forth and bear out the doctrine and realities signified by the words. After God spoke in many times and various ways through events and prophets, He completed revelation of Himself by sending His Son to teach us with divine words and works, signs and miracles, but above all by his death and glorious resurrection... Chapter two discusses the transmission of divine revelation. Christ commanded the apostles to preach the Gospel, and they faithfully handed on by the spoken word all that they had received from Him. This Tradition from the apostles progresses through history with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, giving us an ongoing growth in insight and advancing the Church toward greater understanding of divine truth. Through the Church, this apostolic preaching continues to be handed on and preserved in a continuous line of succession until the end of time. God s message of salvation was, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, also committed to writing in the sacred Scriptures. These two sources of divine revelation, Scripture and Tradition, are bound closely together, flowing from the same divine well-spring making a single sacred deposit of the Word of God. The task of authentic interpretation of this deposit, whether written or oral, has been entrusted to the living teaching office of the Church alone. The Magisterium, we are reminded, is not superior to the Word of God, but its servant. We have been blessed to send several young adults to serve in the past, and this current year as well. Parish Stewardship a way of life Veronica Morman By Leonard E. Churilla, Military Support Ministry Historian Army Staff Sergeant Veronica Morman, 33, is the oldest of three children born in San Francisco to Daniel and Rosario Hernandez. The family moved to Modesto in 1980, the same year Veronica was born. She graduated from Beyer High School in 1998 and joined the U.S. Army on September 1, I was looking for excitement and wanted to travel, she says. It feels good being a soldier and serving my country, she added. Veronica has two younger brothers, Daniel Hernandez, who is also in the Army and stationed in San Antonio, Texas and Adrian Hernandez, who lives in Birmingham, Alabama. (Staff Sergeant Veronica Morman with daughter, Daisha) After basic training at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, Veronica advanced to further training in her specialty in Virginia. She was deployed three times to Iraq, spending a total of 3-1/2 years there. Her military specialty is automated logistics, which involves handling repairable parts. Between tours in Iraq, she was stationed at Ft. Hood, near Killeen, Texas. While there she obtained her Associate s Degree from Central Texas College. She is presently stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas near El Paso, where she was introduced to her husband, Richard, by a mutual friend. Richard is with the Air Defense Command and is now stationed at Camp Carroll in South Korea. Veronica will be leaving for Korea in the near future to be stationed with her husband. They have one child, a daughter, Daisha, who is staying with Daniel and Rosario while the couple are deployed. Daisha was baptized at St. Joseph s on December 21 this past year. Welcome to the St. Joseph s family, Daisha, as we offer prayers of gratitude for the service your parents provide to our country! JOSEPH`S SPANISH CHOIR Under the direction of Julie Estrada our Spanish Choir was established in 2001 and now consists of 16 members - (Francisco and Maria Estrada, Jose Luis and Ofelia Sanchez, Consuelo Carrasco, Carlos Andres, Silvia Hernandez, Angeles Perez, Alfonso Renteria, Erika and Lizbeth Renteria Villalpando, Cesar Soto, Conny Ochoa, Julia Garcia, Ceci Ramirez and Celso Carrasco). It is a wonderful united family in which they serve the Lord, dedicate their talent, encourage each other to develop their musical skills and learn more about our faith. Their instrumentalist, Barbara Sparks became a very important addition, because of her ability to teach the choir and share her music skills. The choir participates every year in the Diocesan procession of Our Lady of Guadalupe. They also are involved in other St. Joseph`s ministries: Spanish charismatic group, Fall Festival, Victory Team, Live Stations of the Cross, Walk for Life, Vacation Bible retreats and many others. Our Spanish Choir has helped the whole community with living the faith by being a welcoming, joyful and prayerful witness. Page 6 - St. Joseph s Modesto From our Holy Father in Rome GENERAL AUDIENCE Wednesday, 2 January 2013 Part III Dear Brothers and Sisters, Indeed, at the beginning of our life as Christians there is Baptism, which causes us to be reborn as children of God and makes us share in the filial relationship that Jesus has with the Father. And I would like to point out that Baptism is received, we are baptized it is passive because no one can become a son of God on his own. It is a gift that is freely given. St Paul recalls this adoptive sonship of Christians in a central passage of his Letter to the Romans, where he writes: all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of sonship. When we cry, Abba! Father! it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God (Rom 8:14-16), not slaves. Only if we open ourselves to God s action, like Mary, only if we entrust our life to the Lord as to a friend whom we totally trust, will everything change, will our whole life acquire a new meaning, a new aspect: that of children with a father who loves us and never deserts us. We have spoken of two elements: the first was the Spirit moving on the surface of the waters, the Creator Spirit: there is another element in the words of the Annunciation. The Angel said to Mary: The power of the Most High will overshadow you. This is a re-evocation of the holy cloud that, during the Exodus, halted over the tent of meeting, over the Ark of the Covenant that the People of Israel were carrying with them and that indicated God s presence (cf. Ex 40:34-38). Mary, therefore, is the new holy tent, the new ark of the covenant: with her yes to the Archangel s words, God received a dwelling place in this world, the One whom the universe cannot contain took up his abode in a Virgin s womb. Let us therefore return to the initial question, the one about Jesus origins that is summed up by Pilate s question: where are you from?. What Jesus true origins are is clear from our reflections, from the very beginning of the Gospels: he is the Only-Begotten Son of the Father, he comes from God. We have before us the great and overwhelming mystery which we are celebrating in this Christmas season. The Son of God, through the work of the Holy Spirit, was incarnate in the womb of the Virgin Mary. This is an announcement that rings out ever new and in itself brings hope and joy to our hearts because, every time, it gives us the certainty that even though we often feel weak, poor and incapable in the face of the difficulties and evil in the world, God s power is always active and works miracles through weakness itself. His grace is our strength (cf. 2 Cor 12:9-10). Many thanks.

7 Sacraments Stewardship: A Way of Life Last week we heard the story of Jeremiah being sent by God to deliver a message to the people. This week we hear of how Isaiah was called to be a prophet and how Peter, James, John and Paul were called to follow Jesus. In faith each one responded with Yes Lord! Send me! The Church teaches we are called by our baptism to a lifelong journey to spread the gospel to all nations. Our lives can be a beacon for others when we ourselves accept the Lord s invitation to follow Him in Faith. May our lives show others the road that leads to Heaven. 9 Nuestro Santo Padre en Roma AUDIENCIA GENERAL Miércoles 2 de enero de 2013 Parte III Queridos hermanos y hermanas: En efecto, en el comienzo del ser cristianos está el Bautismo que nos hace renacer como hijos de Dios, nos hace participar en la relación filial que Jesús tiene con el Padre. Y quisiera hacer notar cómo el Bautismo se recibe, nosotros «somos bautizados» es una voz pasiva porque nadie es capaz de hacerse hijo de Dios por sí mimo: es un don que se confiere gratuitamente. San Pablo se refiere a esta filiación adoptiva de los cristianos en un pasaje central de su Carta a los Romanos, donde escribe: «Cuantos se dejan llevar por el Espíritu de Dios, esos son hijos de Dios. Pues no habéis recibido un espíritu de esclavitud, para recaer en el temor, sino que habéis recibido un Espíritu de hijos de adopción, en el que clamamos: Abba, Padre!. Ese mismo Espíritu da testimonio a nuestro espíritu de que somos hijos de Dios» (8, 14-16), no siervos. Sólo si nos abrimos a la acción de Dios, como María, sólo si confiamos nuestra vida al Señor como a un amigo de quien nos fiamos totalmente, todo cambia, nuestra vida adquiere un sentido nuevo y un rostro nuevo: el de hijos de un Padre que nos ama y nunca nos abandona. Hemos hablado de dos elementos: el primer elemento el Espíritu sobre las aguas, el Espíritu Creador. Hay otro elemento en las palabras de la Anunciación. El ángel dice a María: «La fuerza del Altísimo te cubrirá con su sombra». Es una referencia a la nube santa que, durante el camino del éxodo, se detenía sobre la tienda del encuentro, sobre el arca de la Alianza, que el pueblo de Israel llevaba consigo, y que indicaba la presencia de Dios (cf. Ex 40, 34-38). María, por lo tanto, es la nueva tienda santa, la nueva arca de la alianza: con su «sí» a las palabras del arcángel, Dios recibe una morada en este mundo, Aquel que el universo no puede contener establece su morada en el seno de una virgen. Volvamos, entonces, a la cuestión de la que hemos partido, la cuestión sobre el origen de Jesús, sintetizada por la pregunta de Pilato: «De dónde eres tú?». En nuestras reflexiones se ve claro, desde el inicio de los Evangelios, cuál es el verdadero origen de Jesús: Él es el Hijo unigénito del Padre, viene de Dios. Nos encontramos ante el gran e impresionante misterio que celebramos en este tiempo de Navidad: el Hijo de Dios, por obra del Espíritu Santo, se ha encarnado en el seno de la Virgen María. Este es un anuncio que resuena siempre nuevo y que en sí trae esperanza y alegría a nuestro corazón, porque cada vez nos dona la certeza de que, aunque a menudo nos sintamos débiles, pobres, incapaces ante las dificultades y el mal del mundo, el poder de Dios actúa siempre y obra maravillas precisamente en la debilidad. Su gracia es nuestra fuerza (cf. 2 Co 12, 9-10). Gracias.
