3 THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD MAY 17, 2015 A huge thank you to everyone who sent in canned goods for the Children s Church canned food drive! It was a huge success and we couldn t even get everything over in one load! The kids enjoyed their field trip as they stocked shelves, repacked desserts and breads and got to walk in to the cold refrigerator! It was lots of fun and the kids got to learn even more the importance of helping those in need! Thanks G-Force God s Love in Action VBS is only 8 weeks away! We are continuing to look for help to build a great team. Our greatest needs are 1-2 more preschool cocoordinators (we have 1), people to help with our decorating committee and group leaders! If any of these sound like something you might enjoy and you have the time, please consider helping out. We always have at least 100 children from our parish participate and we can t be successful without a strong team! VBS is June 22 nd -26 th from 9am-12noon each day. Over the next three weeks we will be including a flyer with the bulletin that contains instructions on how to sign up for online giving. Donating is simple, safe, and completely secure. With our parish online giving program called we share, you can set up a recurring weekly or monthly transaction using your checking, savings, or credit card account. You can decide how much to give to any collection and make changes any time, day or night. Plus, you can leave your checkbook at home on Sundays. In the coming weeks, we ll also be allowing our Religious Education parents to make payments on the site and will be promoting a number of church events. Be on the lookout for those announcements. 4 BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC CHURCH HARRISONBURG, VA Food Pantry Needs Volunteers!! With the upcoming vacation season, the pantry needs volunteers for all shifts. This would be a great opportunity for college students returning home to give some time to our ministry. Please contact Barb Warns (bcwarns@comcast.net/ ) or Peggy Zeh (Peggyazeh@gmail.com/ ). ADULT FAITH FORMATION: Our Adult Faith Formation team (FLOW) is looking to add some new team members to our current team. We are seeking people who are interested in working together to offer opportunities for our parish adults to come together for Bible studies, faith-based learning, and fellowship. We currently meet once a month for planning of future programs and events. If this is something you might be interested in helping with or would like more information, please contact Valerie at the office. Thursday morning lectionary Bible Study, 10:30 am in the basement. Runs year around, even during the summer. We study the readings for the upcoming Sunday, using the At Home With the Word scripture guide and commentary. If you would like to join us, we have the guides in the office for $5 each. Please consider helping us help those in need. Snack Saturday/Doughnut Sunday: Young Adult Ministry will be providing snacks after Mass on Saturday, May 30th, and doughnuts after the Masses on Sunday, May 31st. The snacks and doughnuts will be for all of the parish to enjoy. Come and join us after Mass for this time to interact with your fellow parishioners and enjoy some tasty treats. A Prolife Committee is forming at Blessed Sacrament. 7 THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD MAY 17, 2015 CHILDREN S CORNER CYCLE B MAY 17, 2015 The Ascension of the Lord "So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven... But they went forth and preached everywhere." What a roller coaster of emotions the disciples must have experienced. First, they had come to know Jesus and had changed their lives to follow him. Then they had watched him die a tragic death on the cross. Following that, they were astonished to experience the glory of his resurrection, and then they enjoyed his company for a while longer. But now, they had to bid farewell again. Now they watched as Jesus ascended into heaven, leaving them with their instructions: "Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature." It's inspiring to see how the disciples handled all of this. Even though they must have been struggling with a kind of sadness or disappointment when Jesus left them, they didn't dwell on that. They went out and did what they had been called to do. They "preached everywhere" and shared with others the good news. Focusing on the joy they had come to know through their relationship with Jesus, they were able to share that joy with the people around them. Like the first disciples, we are also called to share the gospel with others. Certainly through our lived example we should reveal to others the joy that Jesus brings. Even though he is not physically walking amongst us, the lives of Christian believers reveal an ongoing relationship with him. There may be times and situations, however, that require more of us than just being witnesses. Sometimes God calls us to share more directly and more courageously the message of faith. May we follow the example of the disciples, who readily embraced this call. Liturgical Publications Inc CICLO B 17 DE MAYO DE 2015 La Ascensión del Señor Sabías que tenemos tres relatos de la Ascensión del Señor? Hay dos en Lucas y uno en Marcos. Mateo y Juan no mencionan este acontecimiento. Los tres relatos coinciden poco. Por lo tanto concluimos que esta falta de coincidencia es muy sencilla: los Evangelistas no están dando datos cronológicos de la vida del Señor, sino que ellos están escenificando una profesión de fe. Y esto es lo importante. Si recordamos bien, durante la Cuaresma y la Pascua Jesús vivió acontecimientos importantes que en su ascensión se resumen. Los datos son simbólicos. Arriba es el lugar donde está Dios. Abajo es el lugar de las tinieblas. La nube es la presencia de la divinidad. Los hombres vestidos de blanco asemejan los personajes de Moisés y Elías en la Transfiguración, así como los que anuncian la Resurrección en el sepulcro vacío. Lo recuerdas? La Escritura lo dice: "Subió al cielo y está sentado a la derecha de Dios" (Marcos 16, 19). Somos enviados a la misión, y Lucas le brinda un aire de urgencia al principio del Libro de Hechos: "Mientras miraban fijamente al cielo, viéndolo alejarse, se les presentaron dos hombres vestidos de blanco, que les dijeron: 'Galileos, qué hacen allí parados, mirando al cielo?' " (Hechos 1, 11). Por "cielo" entendemos todo lo que pertenece a Dios. Por lo tanto, mirar hacia el cielo y buscamos su presencia. Físicamente Jesús no se encuentra entre nosotros. Existe tal como lo recitamos en el credo: sentado a la derecha del Padre. Pero el misterio es que nunca nos deja solos, sino que cumple su promesa de estar siempre con nosotros hasta el final de los tiempos. Crees esto? Somos evangelizadores! 7
