1 Ya es hora. Let s talk about our gay and lesbian Latino friends and family members.

2 It s time for us to talk about gay and lesbian Latinos. Our community is evolving. The truth is that Latinos are gay and lesbian, too. This has always been true. Some of us don t want to avoid this fact, but don t know how to talk about it in a way that feels respectful. This may be difficult to discuss because Latinos care deeply about family relationships and don t want to risk offending anyone. Others both gay and non-gay may feel like they don t know how to talk about it what is ok to say? What is not ok? Many people are afraid of the reactions of their family or friends if they find out that someone close to them is gay. Young people often fear outright rejection from their family and friends. However, avoiding the subject because it makes us uncomfortable weakens the Latino community by weakening our family ties. Many Latinos are gay or lesbian or know gay people. In fact, the 2010 Census estimated nearly 1.5 million gay Latino adults live in the US. They are our aunts and uncles, our cousins, our nieces and nephews, our children and grandchildren. They are our neighbors, our coworkers and church members. And they are friends we care about deeply. Ignoring this truth can harm our families by creating division, instead of promoting respect and acceptance. This can also isolate Latino family members from one another, increasing the risk of unhealthy behavior and making it difficult to care for one another. This brochure is designed to help us have these conversations respectfully. Latino to Latino. Because, in the Latino community, we don t turn our backs on our families. 3 Hay que hablar. Ya es hora. La sociedad está cambiando en cada segmento de cada comunidad incluyendo las comunidades Latinas. La verdad es que los Latinos también pueden ser gays y lesbianas. De hecho, siempre han existido. Algunos de nosotros no queremos evitarlo, pero tal vez no sabemos como hablar del tema de una manera respetuosa. Puede ser que sea difícil el discutir este tema porque a los Latinos les importa mucho sus relaciones de familia y no queremos arriesgar el ofender a nadie. 4 No member of anyone s family should face discrimination. Every gay or lesbian person is part of someone s family someone s son or daughter, brother or sister, cousin, aunt or uncle. 6 Schools should teach respect to prevent bullying. Nearly half of all Latino students report being the victim of physical violence at school because of their sexual orientation. (GLSEN, 2009) Schools need to teach kids to treat each other with respect and that includes teaching respect for students who may be gay, who may be perceived to be gay because of stereotypes, or who may have gay family members. 75 % Of Latinos support school policies to prevent harassment and bullying of kids who are gay or lesbian or who may be perceived to look or act gay, even if they are not. 8 Marriage denial makes it hard for gay couples to take care of each other. Being married has brought such happiness to my life, and denying someone else a chance at that kind of happiness, just because they re gay, seems hurtful to me. If a gay couple wants to marry and make that promise to each other, I don t think we should stand in their way. Think about how you would feel if your spouse got really sick and you couldn t take time off to help take care of them because your employer didn t treat you as married. This is one of the many ways that excluding gay couples from marriage makes it harder for them to take care of each other.

9 El negar el matrimonio crea dificultades para que las parejas gays se cuiden entre sí. El estar casado ha traído mucha felicidad a mi vida, y el negarle a alguien esa oportunidad de este tipo de felicidad solo porque es gay me parece malicioso. 10 Latino families are stronger when they are together. My son is gay. When he first told me, I was angry and hurt, and I kicked him out of the house. It was years before I understood what a mistake I d made. Years of my son not feeling part of his own family. He accepted my apology, and now, after all this time, our family is whole again. I never want my son to experience that kind of rejection again.
