Jesus exhorts us in today s Gospel to be good stewards of the things that have been entrusted to us during this time before His second coming. But He reassures us: Do not be afraid any longer, little flock gird your loins and light your lamps. Our beloved Pope Francis also encourages us to walk fearlessly by the Light of Faith. In his new encyclical, Pope Francis presents us with the example of Abraham, our Father in Faith : Something disturbing takes place in his life: God speaks to him; he reveals himself as a God who speaks and calls his name. Faith is linked to hearing. Abraham does not see God, but hears his voice. God is hidden. But like Abraham we must walk in faith and put our absolute trust in the word spoken by God which is a promise for the future. (Cf. Light of Faith #8). We must be faithful because God will be faithful in helping us with our most intimate and personal problems. In Abraham s case this was his infertility and his desire to have a child. In today s second reading we hear the words: Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen. Good stewards must be faithful even when they feel like strangers and aliens on earth seeking a better homeland, a heavenly one. (Heb. 11:1, 13,16). All are invited! Year of Faith Rediscovering the Catechism August 19, 7pm in the hall Maria Delgado-Braun will present on Part III of the Catechism: Commandments 4-6. Also Fr. Mark Wagner will come for the first part and give a brief talk on the commandments. Rediscover the joy of believing AL-ANON OR ALATEEN If you have been affected by someone else's drinking of alcohol, whether a family member or just a friend, these programs can help you. Al-Anon is for adults and Alateen is for young people. Al-Anon meets Wednesday evening from 5:45-7:15pm in room 10 of the John Paul II Building. Alateen meets at 5:45pm also, in room 8 in the same location and the same day. St. Joseph's Holy Land Pilgrimage with Fr. Mark June 2014 Have you dreamed about visiting the birthplace of Jesus? Is the Way of the Cross in Jerusalem tugging at your heart? Plans are being made for a third parish pilgrimage to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. There will be room for 25 parishioners on this 11 day trip. The estimated cost is $3,400 per person for air and ground transport, breakfasts, dinners, admissions and guides. 3 Religious Education A couple weeks ago, 5 members of our parish family attended a five-day Catholic catechetical conference at Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio. This year's theme of the Bosco Conference (named after St. John Bosco) was Blessed by the Father. There were great workshops and lectures by world-renowned catechists, theologians and priests, including keynote speaker, Bishop Richard Malone from the Diocese of Buffalo, New York. We are grateful to St. Joseph s parishioners, who make it possible to participate in this wonderful conference year after year. This year Maria Delgado-Braun received her certification after having attended the necessary years to complete the catechist track. As we get closer to the end of the Year of Faith, I know that God will bless all of us (children, teens, & adults) and help us to grow in the virtues of faith, hope and love through the education and encouragement we received from this conference. Fr. Jay Mello (2012 Lenten Mission speaker) was at the conference again this year and told me to give parishioners his greetings and that you all are in his prayers. Those who want to work in the light - that is, along the way to heaven must draw closer to these two sources of light, or at least one of them. Permission slips are available in the youth office and parish office. The cost is $100 for a weekend at the beach while growing and learning more about our faith, attending Mass, confession, adoration, and a lot of fun! Spots fill up fast, so be sure to sign-up soon. Youth Ministry Upcoming Youth Events: High School Youth Group Kick-Off will be on Sunday, September 15 at 7 p.m. following the 5:30 p.m. Youth Mass. Youth Group will being meeting every Sunday after that in the Fr. O Hare hall from 7-8:30 p.m. We look forward to seeing everyone! Bring a friend! CORE Members and Catechists Needed: The CORE team is made up of adults who have a desire to minister to high school teens. Members will meet once a week and help serve and lead small groups during high school LifeNights on Sunday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m. The second year Confirmation class meets on Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m. Catechists are needed to help lead small groups and prepare our junior high students for this beautiful sacrament. If you feel called to volunteer for either of these dynamic ministries please contact Nathan, Director of Youth Activities. Victory Team Information Meeting: There will be a meeting tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. in the youth and family center in JPII. The peer ministry team is made up of high school students who help with the junior high Confirmation students. All returning members and new teens that feel called to join, see you tomorrow! Steubenville Youth Conference: San Diego July Page 4 - St. Joseph s Modesto Our trip to the Steubenville Youth Conference in San Diego was blessed! There was a total of 5,400 at the conference. On the long bus ride home the teens shared their experiences from the weekend. Highlights included men s and women s sessions, the live music, Eucharistic Adoration, Confession at anytime with Fr. Mark, lots of new friends and fellowship, and closing Mass with the Bishop who prayed over teens that have ever felt a calling to a religious vocation. Thank you for your prayers and support!

St. Joseph s is partnering with United Samaritans Foundation and Interfaith Ministries to break a Guinness World Record. Help us receive over 30,000 cans of food by September 8! Call the Center for Lay Apostolates , ext. 207 St John Chrysostom once said The bee is more honored than other animals, not because she labors, but because she labors for others. Pixie Kinser is one of God s beautiful busy worker bees in our parish. In addition to teaching her Grade 6 PSR class every Wednesday, Pixie has for many years coordinated our 15 minute hall program for our Grades 1-6. She is full of creative ideas to share the beauty of our Catholic faith. As a very active Grandmother, Pixie is often accompanied by her grandchildren, Britton and Kenna as she lovingly models for them the joy of stewardship, found in sharing our Catholic faith. In addition to being a catechist for PSR, Pixie also regularly helps lead the Children s Liturgy of the Word Program at our 10:30 Mass. Pixie is a regular at our weekday 8:00 am Mass renewing her strength by receiving Jesus in Word and Sacrament. As a retired nurse Pixie has for many years led our health ministry team. And like a good worker bee she still finds time for her passion of gardening. The Bible tells us in Romans 12: 11 never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Page 6 - St. Joseph s Modesto From our Holy Father in Brazil HOLY MASS IN THE BASILICA OF THE SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF THE CONCEPTION OF APARECIDA Wednesday, 24 July 2013 Part II Dear brothers and sisters, let us be lights of hope! Let us maintain a positive outlook on reality. Let us encourage the generosity which is typical of the young and help them to work actively in building a better world. Young people are a powerful engine for the Church and for society. They do not need material things alone; also and above all, they need to have held up to them those nonmaterial values which are the spiritual heart of a people, the memory of a people. In this Shrine, which is part of the memory of Brazil, we can almost read those values: spirituality, generosity, solidarity, perseverance, fraternity, joy; they are values whose deepest root is in the Christian faith. 2. The second attitude: openness to being surprised by God. Anyone who is a man or a woman of hope the great hope which faith gives us knows that even in the midst of difficulties God acts and he surprises us. The history of this Shrine is a good example: three fishermen, after a day of catching no fish, found something unexpected in the waters of the Parnaíba River: an image of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Whoever would have thought that the site of a fruitless fishing expedition would become the place where all Brazilians can feel that they are children of one Mother? God always surprises us, like the new wine in the Gospel we have just heard. God always saves the best for us. But he asks us to let ourselves be surprised by his love, to accept his surprises. Let us trust God! Cut off from him, the wine of joy, the wine of hope, runs out. If we draw near to him, if we stay with him, what seems to be cold water, difficulty, sin, is changed into the new wine of friendship with him. 3. The third attitude: living in joy. Dear friends, if we walk in hope, allowing ourselves to be surprised by the new wine which Jesus offers us, we have joy in our hearts and we cannot fail to be witnesses of this joy. Christians are joyful, they are never gloomy. God is at our side. We have a Mother who always intercedes for the life of her children, for us, as Queen Esther did in the first reading (cf Est 5:3). Jesus has shown us that the face of God is that of a loving Father. Sin and death have been defeated. Christians cannot be pessimists! They do not look like someone in constant mourning. If we are truly in love with Christ and if we sense how much he loves us, our heart will light up with a joy that spreads to everyone around us. As Benedict XVI said here, in this Shrine: the disciple knows that without Christ, there is no light, no hope, no love, no future (Inaugural Address, Fifth General Conference of the Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean, Aparecida, 13 May 2007, 3). Dear friends, we have come to knock at the door of Mary s house. She has opened it for us, she has let us in and she shows us her Son. Now she asks us to do whatever he tells you (Jn 2:5). Yes, Mother, we are committed to doing whatever Jesus tells us! And we will do it with hope, trusting in God s surprises and full of joy. Amen.

DEL LAPTOP DEL PÁRROCO, Padre Mark Wagner Queridos Feligreses, Entonces, quien es el siervo fiel y prudente? Jesús nos exhorta en el Evangelio de hoy a ser buenos siervos de las cosas que nos ha dado durante este tiempo antes de su segunda venida. Pero El nos asegura: Ya no tengan miedo, pequeño rebaño...tengan listas sus túnicas y sus lámparas encendidas. Nuestro querido Papa Francisco también nos anima a caminar sin miedo por la Luz de Fe. En su nueva encíclica, el Papa Francisco nos presenta con el ejemplo de Abraham, nuestro Padre en la Fe: Algo molesto acontece en su vida: Dios le habla: se le revela como un Dios que habla y llama su nombre. La Fe está ligada al oído. Abraham no ve a Dios, pero oye Su voz Dios está oculto. Pero como Abraham debemos de caminar en fe y poner una confianza absoluta en la palabra que viene de Dios la cual es la promesa del futuro. (Lumen Fidei #8). Debemos de ser fieles porque Dios siempre es fiel en ayudarnos con nuestros problemas mas íntimos y personales. En el caso de Abraham esto era su infertilidad y su deseo de tener un hijo. En la segunda lectura de hoy escuchamos estas palabras: La fe es la realización de lo que esperamos y la evidencia de cosas no vistas. Los buenos siervos deben de ser fieles aun cuando se sientan como...extranjeros y peregrinos en la tierra...buscando una patria mejor, una patria divina (Heb. 11:1, 13,16). 9 Nuestro Santo Padre en Brasil SANTA MISA EN LA BASÍLICA DEL SANTUARIO DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE APARECIDA HOMILÍA DEL SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO Miércoles 24 de julio de 2013 Parte II Queridos hermanos y hermanas, seamos luces de esperanza. Tengamos una visión positiva de la realidad. Demos aliento a la generosidad que caracteriza a los jóvenes, ayudémoslos a ser protagonistas de la construcción de un mundo mejor: son un motor poderoso para la Iglesia y para la sociedad. Ellos no sólo necesitan cosas. Necesitan sobre todo que se les propongan esos valores inmateriales que son el corazón espiritual de un pueblo, la memoria de un pueblo. Casi los podemos leer en este santuario, que es parte de la memoria de Brasil: espiritualidad, generosidad, solidaridad, perseverancia, fraternidad, alegría; son valores que encuentran sus raíces más profundas en la fe cristiana. 2. La segunda actitud: dejarse sorprender por Dios. Quien es hombre, mujer de esperanza la gran esperanza que nos da la fe sabe que Dios actúa y nos sorprende también en medio de las dificultades. Y la historia de este santuario es un ejemplo: tres pescadores, tras una jornada baldía, sin lograr pesca en las aguas del Río Parnaíba, encuentran algo inesperado: una imagen de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. Quién podría haber imaginado que el lugar de una pesca infructuosa se convertiría en el lugar donde todos los brasileños pueden sentirse hijos de la misma Madre? Dios nunca deja de sorprender, como con el vino nuevo del Evangelio que acabamos de escuchar. Dios guarda lo mejor para nosotros. Pero pide que nos dejemos sorprender por su amor, que acojamos sus sorpresas. Confiemos en Dios. Alejados de él, el vino de la alegría, el vino de la esperanza, se agota. Si nos acercamos a él, si permanecemos con él, lo que parece agua fría, lo que es dificultad, lo que es pecado, se transforma en vino nuevo de amistad con él. 3. La tercera actitud: vivir con alegría. Queridos amigos, si caminamos en la esperanza, dejándonos sorprender por el vino nuevo que nos ofrece Jesús, ya hay alegría en nuestro corazón y no podemos dejar de ser testigos de esta alegría. El cristiano es alegre, nunca triste. Dios nos acompaña. Tenemos una Madre que intercede siempre por la vida de sus hijos, por nosotros, como la reina Esther en la Primera Lectura (cf. Est 5,3). Jesús nos ha mostrado que el rostro de Dios es el de un Padre que nos ama. El pecado y la muerte han sido vencidos. El cristiano no puede ser pesimista. No tiene el aspecto de quien parece estar de luto perpetuo. Si estamos verdaderamente enamorados de Cristo y sentimos cuánto nos ama, nuestro corazón se «inflamará» de tanta alegría que contagiará a cuantos viven a nuestro alrededor. Como decía Benedicto XVI, aquí, en este Santuario: «El discípulo sabe que sin Cristo no hay luz, no hay esperanza, no hay amor, no hay futuro» (Discurso Inaugural de la V Conferencia general del Episcopado Latinoamericano y del Caribe, Aparecida, 13 de mayo 2007: Insegnamenti III/1 [2007], p. 861). Queridos amigos, hemos venido a llamar a la puerta de la casa de María. Ella nos ha abierto, nos ha hecho entrar y nos muestra a su Hijo. Ahora ella nos pide: «Hagan todo lo que él les diga» (Jn 2,5). Sí, Madre, nos comprometemos a hacer lo que Jesús nos diga. Y lo haremos con esperanza, confiados en las sorpresas de Dios y llenos de alegría. Que así sea. Pixie Kinser es una de aquellas hermosas y muy ocupadas abejas trabajadoras en nuestra parroquia. Fuera de enseñar sexto grado de catecismo cada miércoles, Pixie lleva muchos años coordinando nuestro programa de 15 minutos antes de clase para los niños de 1-6 grado en el salón parroquial. Ella tiene muchas ideas creativas que emplea para compartir la belleza de nuestra fe católica. Como una abuela muy activa, Pixie siempre se le puede ver acompañada por sus nietos Britton y Kenna mientras que ella modela amorosamente el gozo de la corresponsabilidad, encontrado al compartir nuestra fe católica. Fuera de ser catequista, Pixie ayuda regularmente con el Ministerio de la Liturgia para los Niños durante la Misa de las 10:30am. Pixie asiste regularmente a la Misa de las 8am renovando así su fuerza al recibir a Jesús en Palabra y Sacramento. Como enfermera retirada, Pixie ha llevado el liderazgo de nuestro ministerio de salud por varios años. Y como una gran trabajadora, todavía encuentra tiempo para trabajar en el jardín, que es su pasión. La Biblia nos enseña en Romanos 12: que nunca le falte el celo, pero mantenga su fervor espiritual, sirviendo al Señor.
