One cannot read the Gospels without becoming aware that Jesus frequently went out of His way to make contact with disreputable people. Certainly, he did nothing to avoid them. Jesus is not impressed by the self-righteous, nor does He classify people (as we often do) into good folks and sinners. In today s Gospel we are told that Simon, Jesus host at dinner, was a Pharisee someone who took great pains to fulfill all aspects of the Law, including many traditions not found in the Pentateuch. We also know Simon s welcome lacked warmth and even the courtesy customarily shown to invited guests. By contrast, the woman who approached Jesus at Simon s home and showed Him the courtesy of anointing His feet was considered sinful by pharisaic standards, though we re not told in what respect. She seems to have accepted the judgment of outstanding sinfulness, and Jesus agreed with her judgment about herself. The difference between Jesus attitude and Simon s is that the Pharisee disdained the woman, while Jesus considered her acknowledged sinfulness as a special opportunity for grace. Those who know themselves forgiven have good reason for gratitude, love, and generosity toward others. Those who think they have no significant need of forgiveness are more likely to be arrogant, meting out approval and friendship in small doses. It is no accident that the liturgy matches this Gospel with the reading from 2 Samuel. Any talk of great sin, great repentance, and great love, would suggest to a devout Jew the figure of King David, the proverbial passionate penitent. The well-known story of David s sin in taking Bathsheba and having Uriah killed had long stood as a reminder that great sinners can become great penitents and lovers. The story of David s confession told in today s first reading, however, follows the part where the prophet Nathan confronts David s sin by telling him a story, supposedly about someone else. Novelists and playwrights often use this strategy because it allows us to look from the outside at a situation without defensiveness and only later do we realize that a similar situation exists in our own lives. So Nathan tells David about a rich man who took the only sheep of a poor man in order to feed a guest, and David is ready to take the life of the rich man for his wrong-doing. That is when Nathan says to him, You are the man, exposing his sin against Bathsheba and her husband, Uriah. Today s liturgy begins at this point, where Nathan now confronts David head on and David s response is to see himself in Nathan s story and confess his great sin. All of today s readings pose the question of whether we recognize ourselves as sinners sinners who have been forgiven much, who have had the debt of five hundred silver pieces remitted, who are justified not by our own efforts but by the death of Jesus. In today s second reading St. Paul expresses the meaning of these stories in a theology of justification we are justified not by having perfectly observed the Law but by having believed in Jesus Christ crucified and in God s redeeming grace. Two paradoxical things are true: All are sinners in need of redemption by the sheer grace of God, and yet all are also called to repent and to live lovingly. Our struggle as Christians is to live out both of these truths in our attitudes and behavior. Perhaps the paradox is best understood in this way: If we acknowledge our sin and believe we have received God s forgiveness, we open ourselves to the possibility of genuine and lasting change a new beginning each time we repent. More than that, we can then offer others the same kind of forgiveness and expectation of change, dropping our stereotypes and learning to love open-handedly, as Jesus did. This is a great challenge for today s civil holiday Father s Day. Those who author life, in the very image of God, always face the call to love more deeply, more faithfully, more honestly. May we at Notre Dame Catholic Church and School both support and benefit from their call! In Jesus, Fr. Mike TODAY S READINGS First Reading The Lord forgives David for taking the wife of Uriah, and for having Uriah killed (2 Samuel 12:7-10, 13). Psalm Lord forgive the wrong I have done (Psalm 32). Second Reading If justification comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing (Galatians 2:16, 19-21). Gospel Jesus forgives the woman because of her great love (Luke 7:36 8:3 [7:36-50]). En Jesús, Padre Mike LECTURAS DE HOY Primera Lectura El Señor perdona a David por tomar a la esposa de Urías y por haber matado a Urías (2 Samuel 12:7-10, 13). 7 BooksToGo from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. Biographies for relaxed summer reading are currently featured. Our newest library helper, Debra Payne, has reviewed an assortment from our large collection. The Story of Thomas More was published in This is a good thing, as during this time biographers would present their subject in a positive light. This is a very easy read and a great book for teenage homeschoolers. St. Katharine Drexel: Pioneer for Human Rights. She truly used her treasures for the poor. Also, the story tells of the dark side of daily discrimination mind set. This is another worthwhile teenage read. The Secret Diary of Elisabeth Leseur. The book is a good read taken whole. However, if time is limited, this book neatly divides into thirds. First is the In Memoriam as a history overview written by her priest husband. By her prayer life, she converted her atheist husband who, after her death, became a priest. This foreword contains an extensive bibliography of anti-christian works written in the later 19th century and books that counter them. Part two is Elisabeth s actual diary. It could be called The Homemaker s Guide to Sainthood or Living a Holy Secular Life The third section is her spiritual exercises. These can be used as short breaks in the work day. The cute little book The Little Flowers of Saint Francis of Assisi has some real spiritual gems in it. Unfortunately, it is written in old English and will not be for everyone. Padre Pio: The True Story is wonderful. First, it reminds me of a Star Trek episode. He grew up in a totally alien environment from USA. The practices and customs fascinate on their own. Next, it is an interesting life story. And finally, it answers the question of why Padre Pio loved visits from American GI s! Before letting a teenager read this, the parent needs to read first. Some of the antique practices for spiritual development mentioned may be an influence to an impressionable youngling. The Long Loneliness by Dorothy Day. I started this book as a hostile reader. I ended it with a clearer understanding and agreement, especially considering the time in which she lived. Dorothy is up for canonization, so learning about her is important. She had a great love for the poor and lived voluntary poverty. The Last of the Fathers by Thomas Merton. This little book is a two-fer. It includes Merton s essay on St.Bernard and a papal encyclical on the same. The essay does a good job with historical background pertinent to Bernard s work. 9 PASTORAL NOTES The Pastor s Upcoming Retreat and Vacation When I was asked to return to this assignment several years ago, in my prayer I promised the Blessed Mother, the Patroness of Notre Dame Catholic Church and School, that I would visit her shrines at Fatima and Lourdes, after we were restored pastorally and financially, knowing that she would be seeking the graces of her Son, Jesus, on our behalf. In order to fulfill that promise, during the first week of my vacation beginning June 25, I will be traveling with a priest friend to Portugal, Spain and France and visiting these sacred sites as a pilgrim. During these days of retreat I will bring all of the intentions of this parish and school, and all of our prayers of thanksgiving for the many, many benefits that we have received in these past three years. If you wish to write intentions for me to take, please bring them to the office and Eva will put them together for me to bring along with me. I will bathe in the springs of Lourdes seeking healing for all in the parish. After the retreat I will be going to a town near Dijon, France to preside at a wedding of one of our former Notre Dame School students. I will return to the United States on July 8th and will continue my vacation, and return to the parish and school on August 1st. I pray that I will be restored and refreshed to begin again. I entrust all of you to the care of Father Gustavo and the parish and school teams until I return. Father Gustavo and I have both been reassigned to Notre Dame Catholic Church and School for another year. We embrace our mission in His mercy and in Mary s love. Please pray for us both that we will have the grace to be faithful and effective ministers of the Christ. I will be continuing all of my other ministeries, especially St. Peter Upon the Water and teaching/preaching so I am still only here on a limited basis. But I will serve with faith and joy. In Jesus, Fr.
