7 How Ride the Bus How Do I Know When the Right Bus Comes Along? Every StaRT bus has its route number at the p front of the bus and on the side window next the front door so you can easily see that you are getting on the right bus. How Do I Get a Bus Sp for Me? As the bus (you want) approaches, face the bus and signal the driver sp. Please be at the sp at least five (5) minutes before the bus is scheduled arrive. Flagdowns are allowed between the first and last sps between wns. Within wns, passengers should board and get off at the nearest StaRT bus sp. Flagdowns are only permitted in areas where the bus can safely pull over. Weather conditions may prevent spping at some flagdown locations. How Do I Pay My Fare? Please have your payment method ready when boarding. If you are paying by cash, just put your fare in the fare box when you board. Fareboxes accept paper money and coins. If change is owed, the farebox will issue a change card. If you are paying with a fare card, insert your card in the fare box and take it when it is finished. Your current ride will aumatically deduct and then the card will be returned you. Where Do I Sit? Get comfortable and take a seat. You will find poles throughout the bus hold if you are standing. Hold small children securely. Please be courteous. The seats at the front of every bus are for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. There are also flip seats at the front for riders in wheelchairs. Please make these areas available for passengers in wheelchairs. How Do I Get Off the Bus? As the bus nears your sp, pull the cord above the windows. This signals the driver sp at the next sp. Please exit the bus through the rear doors. This leaves the front area clear for people who are getting on the bus and helps keep the bus running smoothly and on schedule. Can I get a transfer? Free transfers are available passengers who need switch buses complete their trips on fixed routes. Please request your transfer from the bus driver when boarding the bus and paying your fare. Passengers may only request one transfer per paid fare. Transfers are free riders between StaRT (fixed route), MAX (Modes Area Express), CAT (Ceres Area Transit), Ceres Dial-A-Ride and BLST (Bus Line Service of Turlock). Transfers etrans (Escalon Transit) are.25 cents. Transfers may not be used for the same bus route on which the transfer was issued. In addition, transfers may not be used transfer on Route 70 or between Routes 10 and 15. Passengers are not able transfer on the Shuttle or Dial-A-Ride services except for Ceres Dial-A-Ride. You may transfer on the Runabout Service for fixed route sps only. Transfers are valid for four (4) hours from time of issue. Transfers can only be used for the continuation or extension of a current trip in one direction and may not be used for a return trip. If you are sixty-five years (65) of age or older or have a disability, you are eligible for a StaRT discount card. Request an application by calling 1 (800) or 1 (800) Leave your name and address and an application will be mailed you. You can also pickup an application at the address listed below. 8 Shuttle / Dial-A-Ride / Deviated Fixed Routes Shuttle - Transit service that provides curb--curb transportation between communities & cities. Dial-A-Ride - Transit service that provides curb--curb service within communities & cities. Deviated Fixed Route (Runabout) - Transit service that combines designated fixed routes with curb--curb service (like Dial-A-Ride). How do I schedule a ride on a Shuttle, Dial-A-Ride or the Runabout? Call 1 (800) For curb--curb service, cusmers must call ahead and make reservations. You may call up seven (7) days in advance. We recommend that passengers call no later than four (4) hours before a ride. Your request will be filled on a time and space available basis. On the Runabout, passengers can catch the bus at the designated fixed sps; however, those passengers can only exit the bus at other designated fixed sps. Passengers who need curb--curb service on the Runabout must call ahead schedule a ride. How long will the bus wait for me? The bus will wait five (5) minutes for a person who uses a mobility device and/or Seniors. It will wait three (3) minutes for everyone else. StaRT does not prioritize rides based upon trip purpose. How long will I wait for a Shuttle, Dial-A-Ride, or the Runabout? Please remember that a bus has a thirty (30) minute window for a scheduled pick-up time. The bus may be there fifteen (15) minutes before or fifteen (15) minutes after the scheduled pick-up time. What if I need cancel my ride? If you no longer need a ride that you ve scheduled, please call and cancel as soon as possible, but no less than two (2) hours before the scheduled pick-up time. Reservations cancelled with less than two (2) hours notice are considered a No Show. No Shows or those who do not cancel two (2) hours prior the scheduled pick-up time will be charged. Three (3) No-Shows in a year may be cause for suspension on the Shuttle, Dial-A-Ride, or Runabout for thirty (30) days. What if I need someone accompany me? For curb--curb service, one (1) Personal Care Attendant (PCA) may ride for free when accompanying a paying passenger with a disability who needs assistance. The paying passenger must show their discount card allowing them board the bus with a PCA at the time of paying their fare. The PCA must board and exit the bus at the same sp as the paying passenger. 9 What if I lose something on the bus? You can call StaRT at 1 (800) FAQ s (Frequently Asked Questions) Can I take my bike on the bus? Yes, you can take your bike on StaRT! Most buses have racks on the front that can accommodate up two or three bicycles. When the bus pulls up your sp, just tell the driver that you will be securing your bike the rack and the driver will wait for you. Then board and pay your fare. When you get off the bus, be sure tell the driver you will be removing your bike. Can the bus accommodate my mobility aid? Certainly! StaRT buses are equipped with either a lift or ramp make it easier for persons using a wheelchair, walker, or other mobility aid board. The courtesy seating area at the front of the bus has seats that lift up accommodate a wheelchair. Passenger buses also "kneel" reduce the distance from the curb the first step. How can I find out which bus I need take? You can use the StaRT ride guide help you determine which sp you need or you can use the Easy Rider Trip Planner. Visit our website at use the Trip Planner help find out which bus(es) take make your trip as easy as possible. Do you have any services outside of Stanislaus County? StaRT offers a Medivan service that provides curb--curb transportation Bay Area medical appointments. The cost is only $10 each way and an attendant can ride with paying passengers for only $3.00 each way. Reservations are required for the Medivan by calling 1(800) StaRT s Code of Conduct Passengers must follow the following rules of conduct on all StaRT routes: No alcoholic beverages or illegal substances are allowed. No littering in or on buses or bus sp facilities. No animals allowed (except for service animals permitted by the ADA). Standing passengers must stand behind the "standee" line. No standing or walking in the aisle when the bus is moving. Carriages, strollers and recreational scooters must be folded and out of the aisle. Shoes & shirts must be worn on the bus. Roller blades may not be worn. No profanity (swearing or cursing) allowed. Food and beverages must be in closed containers and carried in bags but may not be consumed on the buses. No more than three (3) bags per each paying passenger. All bags must be able be sred safely on the floor between seats or on your lap and must not leak. For safety, passengers are expected sit upright in their seats. No Tobacco products allowed on StaRT buses. Passengers violating these rules may be asked leave the bus and may be reported the nearest police or sherrif s agency and/or may have their riding privileges temporarily or permanently revoked. StaRT also prohibits violation of California Penal Code Section 640. You can find the Penal Code at 8

10 What is the Medivan? Medivan Information The Medivan is a public transit service that takes passengers from the Modes transit center Bay Area Medical Centers, Monday - Thursday (except holidays). This service provides non-emergency medical transportation. The Medivan is NOT an emergency vehicle and does not serve individuals who require special medical treatment during transportation. However, the Medivan can accommodate people who utilize mobility devices and service animals. How do I make or cancel a reservation? To make or cancel a reservation, please call 1 (800) It is recommended that reservations be made two (2) weeks before your appointment. Reservations are REQUIRED. Where does the Medivan go? The Medivan travels most Bay Area Medical facilities. It goes Livermore, Oakland, San Francisco, Menlo Park, Stanford, Palo Al and more. Some of the facilities served are: Livermore Veterans Administration Hospital, Oakland Children s Hospital, UCSF Medical Center, Menlo Park Veterans Administration Hospital, Stanford Hospitals & Clinics, and the Palo Al Veterans Administration Hospital. Please call 1 (800) if you have questions about facilities or cities not listed above. Will I ever be left behind? What if I need return a different day? StaRT will never leave you stranded. If your appointment ends earlier or goes later than expected, please call 1 (800) right away so the dispatcher can inform the driver. StaRT will work with the driver make arrangements. 14 Cómo Viajar en Aubús Cómo puedo saber cuándo llega el aubús correc? Todos los aubuses tienen su número de ruta en la parte superior delantera del aubús y en la ventana lateral jun a la puerta para que usted puede ver fácilmente que está mando el aubús correc. Las condiciones del tiempo pueden impedir parando en algunos lugares flagdown. Cómo pago mi tarifa? Tenga su pago lis al abordar. Si hace su pago en efectivo, sólo ponga su tarifa en la caja de pago cuando aborde. La caja de pago acepta billetes y monedas. Si se le debe cambio, la caja emitirá una tarjeta de cambio. Sí, usted puede mar el aubús con su bicicleta en StaRT! La mayoría de los aubuses tienen portabicicletas con capacidad para dos o tres bicicletas. Cuando el aubús llegue a su parada, sólo dígale al conducr que tiene que asegurar su bicicleta en el portabicicletas y el conducr le esperará. Después suba al aubús y pague su tarifa. Cuando se baje del aubús, informe al conducr que tiene que bajar su bicicleta del portabicicletas. Tiene lugar el aubús para mi apara (andadera, silla de ruedas, etc.) de movilidad? Claro que sí! Nuestros aubuses están equipados con un ascensor o rampa para hacerlo más fácil para las personas que utilizan una silla de ruedas, andaderas u otros aparas de ayuda/movilidad. El área reservada en la parte delantera del aubús tiene asiens que se levantan para hacer lugar para una silla de ruedas. Los aubuses también "se arrodillan" para reducir la distancia de la banqueta al primer escalón. Cómo puedo saber qué aubús debo mar? Usted puede utilizar el guía de StaRT para ayudar a determinar en que parada tiene que estar o puede utilizar el organizador de viajes Easy Rider. StaRT ofrece servicios de trasporte de Medivan quien ofrece servicios de transporte de acera a acera/puerta a puerta al Área de la Bahía para citas médicas. El precio por vuelta es $10 y un asistente puede viajar con un pasajero pagado por sólo $3.00 por vuelta. Alimens y bebidas deben estar en recipientes cerrados y llevado en bolsas, pero no pueden ser consumidos en el aubuses. No se aceptan más de tres (3) bolsas por pasajero.
