We encourage you to review this guide prior to the celebration for valuable understanding of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, a Pontifical Mission Society, as well as for inspiring support of the collection. Through this special celebration, our support sustains clinics caring for the sick and dying, orphanages providing a place of safety and nourishment, shelters for victims of human trafficking, schools educating children from kindergarten through high school, as well as the support to provide for seminarians preparing for priesthood, and religious Sisters and Brothers in formation programs. Our focus for this year s World Mission Sunday is MISSION AT THE HEART OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH, which is emphasized through this year s poster, as we are reminded that our mission hearts begin the day of our baptism, to go forth and proclaim the Gospel to all. It s this proclamation that unites us all in our commitment to continue the work of Jesus Christ and World Mission Sunday provides this opportunity of re-commitment. Pope Francis stresses that we must continually offer ourselves and constantly invite others to share the Gospel with our brothers and sisters all throughout the world. Our prayers, support and commitment will impact young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and part of Latin America and Europe where missionary priests, religious and lay leaders share the faith and serve those most in need. Share these resources with your parish staff, council and liturgy committee, and discuss how to both promote and celebrate that Sunday s liturgy. Include in weekly homilies and bulletins Archbishop s Gomez s Mission Sunday letter or a message from your executive director, Msgr. Terrance Fleming. Display the enclosed posters before World Mission Sunday and all during Mission Month (October). Distribute World Mission Sunday envelopes throughout your parish pews. Welcome a missionary to share their experiences with your parishioners, which can be arranged by contacting the Mission Office at (213) Celebrate World Mission Sunday with your entire parish community your school and/or religious education program, parish organizations, and, most especially, during the Liturgies of World Mission Sunday weekend. At Mass that Sunday, we recommit ourselves to our common call, through Baptism, to be missionaries, through prayer, participation in the Eucharist, and by giving generously to the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. As we pray and respond on World Mission Sunday here at home, we share in those celebrations taking place in every parish, seminary, school and convent all over the world. Together with our brothers and sisters in the Missions, we offer our prayers and sacrifices so that others may come to know Jesus. In a world where much divides us, World Mission Sunday transcends borders and rejoices in our unity as missionaries! And it provides an opportunity to support the lifegiving presence of the Church among the poor and marginalized in more than 1,100 mission dioceses. 6 WORLD MISSION SUNDAY CELEBRATION MISSION AT THE HEART OF CHRISTIAN FAITH Celebrating World Mission Sunday in the Liturgy From the Roman Missal, use the Mass prayers from the Mass for the Evangelization of Peoples (found in the Mass formularies under Masses for Various Intentions ). You might find that two Eucharistic Prayers that are especially appropriate for World Mission Sunday are: The Church on the path to unity and Jesus, who went about doing good. The Sprinkling Rite might be used to solidify our baptismal call to our role with our mission family. For all who are sick, in our parish family and throughout the world, and for all who have died, especially those martyred for our faith in Jesus, we pray to the Lord. Celebrant: Lord, you are the giver of every gift, including the most precious and holy gift of your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to remember how important it is for us to also be a generous giver of gifts, so that we can carry out Christ s mission through His Mercy for His Church on earth, we ask this through Your Son Jesus Christ. UNIVERSAL PRAYER (PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL): Celebrant: As a Church without borders or walls, we offer prayers for our sisters and brothers throughout the world who are hungry, fleeing violence, are afraid or in need in any way. Deacon/Reader: For our Holy Father, Pope Francis, that the Lord might strengthen him in faith and courage as he shows the world the missionary heart of our faith, let us pray to the Lord For all elected leaders, that they may govern justly, heal divisions, and foster peace, let us pray to the Lord FINAL BLESSING May God continue to grace us with his mercy and love, enabling us to go forth and share the message of salvation all across the world. For all missionaries who serve God and their fellow brothers and sisters, that they may continue to give witness to the Lord s loving kindness and redeeming presence, let us pray to the Lord... Speaker Notes Let the church community know that their prayers and generous support on World Mission Sunday, through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, directly benefit the Mission Church in its service to the world s most vulnerable communities in over 1,100 mission dioceses. Mention the theme, Mission at the heart of our Christian Faith and consider speaking about: Mission at the heart of our Faith in THE AMERICAS where Catechists travel to remote areas to bring the Good News of God s great love to families. Mission at the heart of our Faith in EUROPE where new churches are being built to welcome faith communities, renewed after years of persecution. Mission at the heart of our Faith in ASIA where six million children receive an education from religious sisters in some 16,000 church-run Elementary schools. Please contact our office at (213) if your parish does not receive this shipment. These envelopes are extremely important for a successful collection and they should be displayed throughout your parish. Remind your parishioners the importance their prayers and acts of mercy towards the missions reflects our common vocation from baptism when reflecting on their donation. Did you know? What is the origin of World Mission Sunday? In 1926, Pope Pius XI instituted World Mission Sunday. He asked for prayer, animation, celebration, and offerings for the Missions. His concern was to engender a sense of responsibility in people for supporting the Missions throughout the world. The first commemoration was in 1927 and the Pope asked that it would be observed in every diocese, parish and institute. It was to be a true World Mission Sunday. The collection on that first World Mission Sunday, like today, is for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, providing support for the life-giving and hope-filled work and witness of priests, religious and lay pastoral leaders in mission churches. Through the Church, Christ continues his mission as the Good Samaritan, caring for the bleeding wounds of humanity, and as Good Shepherd, constantly seeking out those who wander along winding paths that lead nowhere. Thank God, many significant experiences continue to testify to the transformative power of the Gospel We can think too of countless testimonies to how the Gospel helps to overcome narrowness, conflict, racism, tribalism, and to promote everywhere, and among all, reconciliation, fraternity, and sharing. The Church s mission impels us to undertake a constant pilgrimage across the various deserts of life, through the different experiences of hunger and thirst for truth and justice.
