9 Oral Hygiene Instructions Text provided in English and Spanish Modified from the UTHSCSA Department of Dental Hygiene Clinic Manual English Before we begin cleaning your teeth, I want to talk to you about plaque Do you know what plaque is? Plaque is a sticky, colorless layer of harmful bacteria that is constantly forming on your teeth recognized as a primary cause of the two most common dental diseases Most common dental diseases: 1. Dental caries (tooth decay), the major cause of tooth loss in children 2. Periodontal or gum disease (pyorrhea), the major cause of tooth loss in adults Spanish Antes de empezar a limpiarle los dientes, quiero hablarle sobre de la placa [plaque] Sabe usted qué es la placa? 12 FLUORIDE INSTRUCTIONS: At this time, I am going to give you some fluoride. This is to help your teeth become stronger and if any cavities are present it will help slow the process. It will also help if you have any teeth that are sensitive. I am going to dry your teeth with air and then I will place the trays over the teeth. I want you to chew on them for four minutes I will place the saliva ejector in-between the trays so that you will not swallow any of the fluoride. You will not be able to eat or drink anything for thirty minutes after I remove the trays. En este tiempo, voy a darle fluoruro.
