1 Common Breast Changes Changes in breast tissue are common over a lifetime. Changes can happen due to hormones and the normal aging process. Although most changes in the breasts are not cancer, you should always have your breasts checked by your doctor. What breast changes should I look for? Your breasts are made up of ducts, lobules, fibrous tissue and fat. Under the breasts are muscles and ribs. These body tissues may make the breasts feel lumpy or uneven. Women may have changes in their breasts around the time of their monthly menstrual period. Swelling, tenderness and pain in the breasts can happen before and sometimes during your period. You may feel one or more lumps in your breasts. These symptoms are often caused by the hormone changes during your menstrual period. Fatty tissue Mammary gland Mammary duct Fibrous tissue It is important to know how your breasts normally look and feel. A breast self exam (BSE) is a way to check your breasts for changes. 3 Page 2 When you do a BSE, you should look for the following: A change in the size of your breasts Color or texture changes of the skin such as redness or thickening New lumps An unusual discharge from a nipple Changes in your breast from your previous BSE What are the common breast changes? Cysts Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop in the breasts. They can feel soft, hard, round, oval-shaped or spongy. Cysts may get bigger and become tender and painful just before your menstrual period. Cysts are common in women between the ages of 35 and 50 and women close to menopause. Fibrocystic changes Fibrous tissue in the breasts can increase in size due to hormone changes. Fibrocystic changes may cause more tenderness and pain in one or both breasts before your menstrual period. Fibrocystic changes can be described as breasts feeling full, lumpy or rope like. Increased fibrous tissue Cysts Calcifications Breast calcifications are calcium deposits in the breast tissue. Calcifications can be seen on a mammogram and are common as women age. Calcifications may be caused by old cysts, breast injuries or infections. On a mammogram, calcifications look like small white dots or white specks.

5 Page 3 What should I do if I find a lump or change in my breasts? You should call your doctor if you see or feel a change in either of your breasts or if you are not sure what you see or feel. Breast Screening Recommendations A woman between the ages of 20 and 40 should: Know how her breasts normally feel and report any changes right away. Talk to your doctor about how to do a monthly breast self exam (BSE). Have a breast exam by a doctor at least every 3 years. A woman 40 years or older should: Do a monthly breast self exam (BSE) and report any changes to her doctor. Have a breast exam every year by a doctor. Get a mammogram every year. You should talk with your doctor about your breast screening schedule if you have any of the following: Previous history of breast problems A family history of breast cancer A family history of ovarian cancer
