No 5:30 Saturday evening Mass During the Summer There will not be a 5:30 pm Saturday evening Mass during the summer. The last 5:30 pm Mass at St. John s will be on Saturday, June 29 th. The 5:30 pm Mass will resume on Saturday, September 7. Confessions at St. John s during the summer will continue to be from 4:30 until 5:00 pm. Annual Cardinal s Appeal Our numbers are growing, slowly but surely. We very much appreciate the 211 families of our parish who have pledged $56,276 and paid $52,698 to the Annual Cardinal s Appeal! To be true stewards, and to make this Appeal truly successful, we need the support of all families in our parish. Please prayerfully consider your support and make your donation soon, especially if you have been a supporter in past years and have not taken the opportunity to donate yet this year. Thank you. Christmas Fair The Women s Club is always in need of your jewelry donations, which are used for our Parish Christmas Fair in December. Please contact Virginia To serve your needs better, our pastor would like to know: - Of any parishioner who is hospitalized - Of anyone in need of prayer - Of anyone who would like a pastoral visit Our parish priests and the Special Ministers of Holy Communion bring the Eucharist to our ill parishioners. Through the Outreach Program Parish Volunteers provide supportive and practical services for seniors and other persons who are in need. These include friendly visiting, telephone reassurance, shopping, and local medical transportation/escort. Drivers are needed for the Outreach Program for doctor s appointments. 3 Reflection from Sister Kathy Pilgrimage to the Holy Land I was privileged to have participated in the recent parish trip to the Holy Land. It is difficult to capture in words the richness of the various places we know from the Bible, the insightful explanations of our knowledgeable guide, and the thrill on standing on hillsides and streets that Jesus knew. As Father Richard said, before we pictured the Gospels in black and white, now we see them in color. Each of the eighteen participants had moving experiences at different sites and many of us were overwhelmed again and again. I would like to share one such moment. We were at the site of the house of the high priest Caiaphas, where a church now stands. It was here that Jesus was held prisoner after his arrest. On the outside of the church is a mosaic which shows Jesus in a type of harness by which he was lowered into a cistern to spend the night. At the time of Jesus there was simply a hole through which prisoners were lowered into the muck and mud of the unused cistern. Today there are steps chiseled into the side of the hole and our guide invited us to descend to the bottom and try to imagine what it must have been like for Jesus. We pictured Jesus: bound by ropes, bleeding from the scourging, humiliated and fearful, knowing there was no escape, surrounded by darkness and abandoned by friends. Then we listened in silence to the reading of Psalm 88 which speaks so poignantly to the plight of Jesus. As we ascended the steps to continue the visit to the church, I felt that we had shared an intimate moment with Christ in his passion. It was chilling to remember that while all this was going on in the life of Jesus, life in the house of the high priest went on as usual. Only the apostles, Mary and a few women even knew where Jesus was. So like our own lives, the truly important events of life often escape us as they occur. I pray that the blessings of this pilgrimage fall gently on all of us in the parish. REVENUE SHARING PROGRAM (YOU HAVE TO BE IN IT TO WIN IT) The new program began last week. Envelopes have been mailed to those who usually pay in full at the beginning of the program. Packets of envelopes are available in the rear of the churches for those who prefer to pay weekly or monthly. If you are a new member of the program and are going to pay in full, please fill in the required information, insert your donation of $20 and return all of the envelopes. If you are paying weekly, it is necessary that you complete the information on each of the envelopes. All participants who are paid up to date are eligible for the $25 weekly drawing as well as the two grand prizes of $500 and $1000. Thank you for your continued participation in this important parish fundraiser. ST. JOACHIM - ST. JOHN S SUMMER READING GROUP This summer, we re going to be reading several short stories by the American writer Flannery O Connor. O Connor is considered one of the greatest American writers of the 20 th century and was a devout Catholic. Her faith shapes her writing in very surprising ways. She is an immensely interesting person in her own right, a large collection of her letters was published several decades ago and there are several good biographies still in print. But it s her fiction that will make you love her if you ve never heard of Flannery O Connor, take this opportunity to get to know her, you won t regret it! For starters, we ll read three short stories: A Good Man is Hard to Find, A Temple of the Holy Ghost and Revelation. We will meet to discuss the stories on Tuesday, August 6 th at 7:30pm in the Church Hall at St. Joachim s. An edition of O Connor s Collected Stories is available from the parish office for $5. William J. Reilly Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 14, 2013 Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the man who fell in with the robbers? The answer came, The one who treated him with compassion. Jesus said to him, Then go and do the same. For this command which I enjoin on you today is not too mysterious and remote for you. Most of us are ready to offer our opinion on any subject, often without being asked. How different when Jesus meets the lawyer and responds to his inquiry And who is my neighbor? The response so well known to us is directed to our conscience today, helping us to act correctly and live. Reflect for a minute. The priest and Levite could readily offer an excuse for bypassing or ignoring the person in distress. The Samaritan could not, but took action, revealed his ongoing, and even offered to return to look after the victim. Our Good Samaritan laws offer some protection for well intentioned people, but a disciple goes much further to assure that victims of injustice, discrimination, poverty are cared for, whether through legislation, works of mercy, or charity. There is no one who cannot find someone near in need of and worthy of our compassion. Do the words of the judgments scene echo in our hearts? Because you did it for one of my least?

Evangelio : Lc 10,25-37: Parábola del buen samaritano Un samaritano tuvo compasión; y, acercándose, vendó sus heridas y, montándole sobre su propia cabalgadura... Dejarlo todo para acoger a quien lo necesita (el buen samaritano) y hacer bien el trabajo por amor (el posadero), son las dos formas de amar que nos corresponden: «Quién te parece que fue prójimo?. El que practicó la misericordia con él. Díjole Jesús: Vete y haz tú lo mismo». Acudamos a la Virgen María y Ella que es modelonos ayude a descubrir las necesidades de los otros, materiales y espirituales. Oración: Gracias, Padre, porque no andamos solos por la vida, ni marchamos a la deriva, perdidos en la niebla del aislamiento o la soledad que nos empobrece. Tú eres presencia constante a nuestro lado, presencia palpable y sensible en tu Hijo hecho carne; presencia hoy actual mediante tantos samaritanos y samaritanas de amor comprometido que, siguiendo las huellas de Cristo saben cambiar desinteresadamente el camino de sus vidas para ofrecer sus servicios a los necesitados. Por Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Amén. ANUNCIOS Hoy, nos preguntamos: «Y, quién es mi prójimo?». Cuentan de unos judíos que sentían curiosidad al ver desaparecer su rabino en la vigilia del sábado. Sospecharon que tenía un secreto, quizá con Dios, y confiaron a uno el encargo de seguirlo... Y así lo hizo, lleno de emoción, hasta una barriada miserable, donde vio al rabino cuidando y barriendo la casa de una mujer: era paralítica, y la servía y le preparaba una comida especial para la fiesta. Cuando volvió, le preguntaron al espía: «Dónde ha ido?; al cielo, entre las nubes y las estrellas?». Y éste contestó: «No!, ha subido mucho más arriba». Amar a los otros con obras es lo más alto; es donde se manifiesta el amor. No pasar de largo!: «Es el propio Cristo quien alza su voz en los pobres para despertar la caridad de sus discípulos». Hacer de buen samaritano significa cambiar los planes («llegó junto a él»), dedicar tiempo («cuidó de él»)... Esto nos lleva a contemplar también la figura del posadero: «Qué habría podido hacer sin él? De hecho, el posadero, permaneciendo en el anonimato, realizó la mayor parte de la tarea. Todos podemos actuar como él cumpliendo las propias tareas con espíritu de servicio. Toda ocupación ofrece la oportunidad, más o menos directa, de ayudar a quien lo necesita. El cumplimiento fiel de los propios deberes profesionales ya es practicar el amor por las personas y la sociedad».
